Caliper Painting

For tire removal instructions check the Tire change section.

Once the tire is removed the first, and most labor intensive step, is to prep the calipers for painting. You should purchase wire brushes for for this step. The cost should be around $5.00. Using the provided cleaner, thoroughly scrub the brakes until there is no sign of dust, or oxidation. Once you have finished removing any debris from the calipers spray then down one last time to remove any extraneous oil.

For the fronts, disassemble the brake assembly as shown above. Instructions can be found at Front Brakes. When using the cleaner take care as not to get any on the plastic or rubber parts of the brakes. This is also the step where you should tape off any area you do not want to paint. (Note: Make sure the brakes are positioned in a way that allows all surfaces to be painted. I found that resting the caliper on a 2x4 clamped to a cinderblock as shown below works well. If necessary, stabilize the caliper with a coat hanger.) Once you are sure the brakes are clean, positioned, and taped off correctly, you can mix the paint. Pour the paint into the hardener container and mix well for at least one minute. The manufacture recommends letting the mixture sit for 15 minutes to allow the hardener to react.

Painting is very straight forward. Once you have finished the calipers go back to the front brakes and clear out the holes that the retaining springs go in. A coat hanger is the perfect size. Also at this time I polished the retaining springs. I found steel wool works best for this task. After approximately one hour you can go back and apply a second coat if desired or needed. With the application of the final coat of paint , all that is left is to let it dry. This takes at the least 12 hours, although more time may be needed. The finished project should look something like the picture below.
