Securing The MAF Connector

Some time after 1996 a message came out about the Mass Air Flow connector on the turbo models. In time and because of the shortness of the connector from the MAF connection and the wiring harness, a resistance can build up on the connection. In time due to vibration, the connector can become chaffed, causing a bad connection. This bad connection can send incorrect information to the Engine Control Module (ECM), it can also set codes suggesting that the MAF sensor is bad. (ECM 121). The above picture is what the typical connection looks like prior to the recommended fix.

To correct to potential problem, take the connector off, clean it out with some type of contact cleaner, then plug and un-plug the connector about 20 times. I also put some die-electric grease on the connections or some stable-lite. Once the connector is connected after the cleaning and such, tie wrap the wire to the MAF housing as illustrated in the above photo. This will ensure you don't have problems down the road caused by the connector chaffing.
