Engine Torque Rod Bushing

Volvos have a nasty little problem of breaking the torque rod bushings. The stock ones are made of rubber which becomes brittle with age and easily cracks. A lot of people may be considering installing an after-market IPD bushing after the stock one breaks. This page will show you what you are getting into before you start. This will be the first of several modifications I will document on this page.

Tools Needed:
Socket wrench, Sockets (I used a 14 mm Socket and got a tight fit), Hack saw, Torque Wrench.

Shown above:
Very top is a piece of the broken stock bushing.
In the middle is the Torque Rod.
Bottom is the IPD bushing.

The first step is to remove the Torque Rod (above photo). Next, remove the stock bushing. This was pressed into place, so I had to use a hack saw. Be careful not to cut into the engine mount under the bushing.

Once the bushing has been cut it easily slides out . A lubricant may help.

Next, slide the two piece IPD bushing into place. Make sure that any petroleum based lubricant you may have used is wiped off and does not come in contact with the bushing.

Now replace the the torque arm, making sure that the side with the welded nut is up. This makes tightening harder but the bolt that holds it will not go back in with the welded nut in the up position. Once in place IPD recommends tightening all the bold to 36 lb/ft.

And that's that. The total process takes about 30 minutes. The only time consuming part is cutting away the old bushing and making sure not to cut too far.
