S40 V40 Volvo Rear Brake Service

Published on January 31, 2011 by Bay13

Replacing the rear brakes on the S/V 40 is a bit different than 850 or the S/V 70 Volvos. The rear calipers need to be compressed as they are turned. The tool to do this can be purchased at most automotive stores like Track Auto, or what ever store is available in your area. You could also get the Volvo tool from a Volvo dealer, the part number for the compression tool is 999 5782. Brake grease is applied to the pads and connecting parts on the caliper, the part number for the grease is 1161325. It is time to replace the rear pads when the remaining pad is at 2mm. The rotors should be replaced when the thickness reaches 8.9mm. Before you start the job, remove some of the brake fluid to ensure it doesn't overflow when you compress the pistons on the calipers.

Caliper Rebuild Guide

Published on January 31, 2011 by Volvospeed

Rebuilding a brake caliper is pretty much the same on any vehicle whether its a Honda, Mitsubishi, Ford or a Volvo. As a general rule, a caliper rebuild kit cost around ten to twenty dollars for most street cars. If you take the time and rebuild your calipers every other brake job, you greatly reduce the risk of ever experiencing a leaking caliper or seized caliper. With the caliper removed from the car, pull away the dust boot to expose the piston. With the dust boot removed, place a block of wood between the piston and caliper. Making sure your hands are totally clear of the piston, use a compressor and air gun to slowly pressurize the caliper via the brake line port. This will force out the piston violently (MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAR).

OK, you finally have your new brakes installed. What's the first thing you want to do? Well, first you want to make sure they actually work before you go flying out of your driveway. What next? Hit 60 mph and stand on them to see how much abuse your neck will take. No, before you do that there is still some last minute work do be done.

Volvo 850 S70 Front Brakes

Published on January 25, 2011 by Bay13
Just a few general things to mention prior to starting a front brake job. Look at the brake fluid reservoir and make sure it is at a level that will allow for the collapsing of the two front calipers, I have found that in between the min and max line is more than enough room. The brake fluid should be DOT 4. The part number for the front pads is 271859. The pink silicon grease is part number 1161325. If you are replacing the rotors make sure you specify 4 lug or 5 lug rotors (the older 850 has 4 lug). You will also need a can of brake cleaner to clean surfaces you will be putting the silicon grease on.

Above is a set of new pads and the shims that go with this particular set of pads. Not all pad sets are the same, some (newer Part # 272407) have a shimming built right into the pads, others have a cut out type shim. When buying from the dealer ensure they are up on what is required for your vehicle. Generally if you had shims then clean them up and use them again, if you have cut out shims do not use them with the new pads get part # 1359772. The punch and hammer is used to knock the pins out (green arrow) Below shows the silicon grease applied. First grease the pad backing, then put the shim on and then grease the shim.
