I figured I would document my wrenching adventures as I have been wrenching exclusively on both RWD and FWD Volvo's for several years now to pass the time (and money).
I test drove a cheap 1995 Volvo 850 turbo on craigslist and became addicted to boosting in a T5, the car was faster than I thought it would be (honestly).
I bought the car, my first 850 turbo, for $900 from this chick who dented the left-front fender, broke the left-front fender, and a loud tick coming from the motor (which later turned out to be a bad A/C compressor.)

All was looking alive and well for this car, I even scored an identical matching fender from another Volvohead for $25. I bought another matching mirror from Ebay also.
Everything was great until Christmas day when a coworker gave me his gift by nailing it with his 1500 Silverado doing a all sorts of damage worse than what I started out with in the first place.
I cut my losses, parted out the car, kept the running motor (I had even installed a Continental timing belt and water pump kit that only saw about 10,000 miles).

    2018-08-23_11-55-14_791.jpeg

I began to hunt for another cleaner (and physically unmolested) Volvo 850 but a sedan this time, I had been getting the itch for a cleaner 850 I can start doing some tasteful performance mods to.
I was getting desperate in finding a rust-free 850 in my area of New Mexico at a decent price. I got in contact with a seller in Phoenix, Arizona who was selling a clean Volvo 850 sedan who's daughter ended up overheating and killing a week before, so lucky me? Not really.

I ended up taking advantage of my California trip and picked up a clean "reliable, low-mile" 850 sedan. The vehicle looked in really good condition, inside and out; this is definitely one of the cleanest Volvo 850's I have seen lately.
I test drove it good, everything seemed fine so I ended up coughing up $1350 for it considering its condition.

I tested the car around the LA area before taking the plunge and attempting to drive it back to my hometown of Albuquerque 10 hours away. Everything seemed to check out.....until I started to get close to the CA-AZ border and the car started to overheat. Big whoop, I was crying about the cost of getting the car back home than the actual condition of the car itself. I don't think the owner knew but the motor had been opened up before considering the sloppy black goop sandwiched between the sections of the engine block. The spark plugs were also numbered from 1 to 5 so I could tell no genius was not under the hood any time recently. I didn't want anybodies sloppy seconds on this motor anyways so I began to swapping the motor right away. The old motor will get salvaged.

The donor motor was leaky so I changed as many seals as I could on the block including the front main seals, front camshaft seals, oil thermostat seals, and rear main seal. I also had purchased a 15G turbo from another 850T a while back and rebuilt it with a 15G rebuild kit from Amazon which I swapped into this donor motor.

The engine is now dropped in, everything is connected. The car now has a crank-no-start condition. Fuel pressure is present but I have yet to check for spark. If spark is present, I will re-check the timing. The engine was spun by hand after redoing the timing on the motor so I might be off by a tooth. I hope to report back to the blog with some success.

I just wanted to let people that a cem and the Ecm can now be purchased used and placed into other cars. I purchases a 2012 with a damaged CEM and had a used one reprogrammed. Volvo released the software for this to be done. I used Xemodex to do this transfer. They were very quick but expensive. Around $575 with a used module from them. Better than towing car to dealer and paying their prices.

So, i have a 98 S70 T5 manual. its lowered on ipds and bilstein struts. cold air with down pipe and exhaust... my next plan is to do an ECU and an inter cooler and Reverse inter cooler piping kit. im planning on doing it in steps.. which should i do first or be more effective? i know the ECU would help big time but im gonna do that after i do the inter cooler or reverse inter cooler piping kit. so which one is more effective, just an aftermarket inter cooler or a reverse inter cooler piping kit?

  2. Okay so I have a 2004 Volvo s60, just had it inspected so im assuming this problem doesn't have anything to do with any parts that would need to be good for inspection. It sounds like my front drivers side tire is going to fly off my car >:0. Anyway, its making a grinding noise (pretty loud) as well as a rattling noise when im driving slow speeds or turning left. If i ride my breaks a little bit, the noise instantly goes away, and if the car is in park turning my steering wheel all the way around both ways there is no noise. Has anyone had a similar problem? I really need an idea of what I need fixed before i bring it in somewhere, because i feel like half the time the wrong thing is done & I don't have the money to waste.

I'm Looking into buying an XC90 but I have read some bad reviews. I was wanting to get some help and input on common problems with these vehicles, which engine is best and what to look for before and during a test drive. The year models I have been looking at are between '04 and '07. Thanks a lot!

I recently brought my car out from storage and after driving it i notice that on the boost gauge it will not build boost until very high RPM's (3800-4000) and when it does it is only reading 3-5psi and it doesn't seem to hold the pressure at WOT the car has a full 3" turbo back exhaust big flow cats and mufflers, and the turbo was upgraded to a 19T any thoughts would be great,

    • Hey folks, after my 1998 S70 had some electrical problems related to the battery fixed, my radio locked itself and doesn't work anymore. My local dealer wants to charge me for a simple lookup, so I figured I'd try here.

My radio is an SC-813 with the serial V01030 V8050603C.

      Thanks!

Haven't been on this forum for awhile, but this is all correct. My 1998 V70 T5M was totaled a couple years ago (100% other driver's fault). I contacted VCNA to get numbers I could use to convince the insurance company of the rarity, because I felt their initial offer was too low. They gave me the 127 number, but emphasized that it was not "official" i.e. they would give it to me on the phone but not in writing. Take it for what it's worth, but I believe that to be an accurate figure. The insurance company ended up giving giving me $9k for the car (even with over 160,000 miles on it) and then sold it back to me for $500. I parted out the rest for another $4k+ and came out way ahead, but was sad to see another V70 T5M off the road. At least the M56H from that car lives on somewhere in Texas. These T5M's are truly great Volvos, especially the '98s, so take good care of them!

I love google. All seriousness I know they do tons of stupid moves. Most recently the delayed launch of google+ for business comes to mind. Before that there was the whole no google+ access for apps users. All of that aside, google is an amazing company. Look how much information they sort on a daily basis. I tell people all the time, "unless google's servers are all down I do not want to hear a stupid comment from you". Anyone who seriously thinks google sucks must have no idea how much is going on behind the scene. They bring you a full online office suite with apps, search engines, video hosting with youtube, maps, gps, anything you can think of and 99% of the time free to the end used.

For those reasons I laugh when people say google+ does not stand a chance against facebook. Google can leverage SEO against their google+ pages, which FB cannot. Add to that they own youtube, and are now sorting your search results based on who you are friends with. Tie it all together with google apps and maps and there is really no reason to leave. What I like more is that unlike facebook google+ is encouraging sites to develop their own content not content on facebook. I really think from the business standpoint facebook set the internet back years.

If you have any doubt just look at it from a visual stand point. Look at volvospeed's facebook page then their google+ page. What looks cleaner to you:

So I've got a full line of projects ahead of me and I want you all to know. I plan to take something old and make it new again for everyone. I want to add style, performance, luxury and agility to the car market with originality.

    My plans include:

    -Boxy shape

    -Originality

    -Agility

    -Sound

    -Old to New

    -Unstoppable

    -Reliable

    -Excellent MPG's

    Think of something innovative, I mean who said you can't _ _ _ - _ _ _ _ in a car that actually does work.

  5. I more or less given up on television some years ago. Lost DVD Once the prince left the airwaves, I have not watched television or a particular program on a regular basis. The Simpsons DVD In fact, you probably have not seen more than five hours this year. Well, that all changed a few weeks ago when my girlfriend was sitting at home and the owners had the first season on DVD. House MD DVD She came in and said: "You have to do with me." In short, just seen a DVD of one night for the next six nights. Note, do not watch TV and print'm wasting my time when I do. This is not a waste of time. There are others who can do better than intrigue me but I'll just say it's a fascinating story. This is the kind of story that makes you talk to your friends and ask, Grey's Anatomy DVD "What do you mean x?" "Oh yes, yes, what is there?" There are so many twists that you can not wait to learn more. It is a mystery chip ".The integration of people with life before the island is a wonderful feature. The character development is incredible and what you want the TV program. MI5 DVD They are like real people. They have stories, lives, hopes, dreams, sins and redemption. This is a wonderful show. Praise. Purchase. Whatever you do, just watch.
