Rich,
I was trying to disconnect larger red tube held by clamp near turbo. I could not get it disconnected. Do I have to pull it very hard?

You should never have smokie fumes(blowby gases) coming out of the dipstick or the oil cap if you take it off, running or not.

I work a small metal pick I have between the rubber and the stand off it connects to. I also cut them off if I have a new one to put on. A razor blade or sharp pocket knife helps.

As a follow up to this thread that I started a few weeks ago:

I drove my 850 turbo over to my very good Volvo only specialist shop and had the shop manager take a look at the dipstick and oil filler cap smoke ( really vapor) that had me concerned.

The verdict- everything perfectly normal for an 850 turbo and on par with the cars he sees everyday. The vapor was not excessive. He knows me and knows I always change the oil every 5K with Mobil 1 10-30 - consequently, he doubted there would be any blockage in the PCV system.

Nate, when I saw smoke coming out of my dipstick and oil fill, I had my entire PCV system replaced. This was after I verified that nothing was blocked. Now, I don't see any smoke coming out of my dipstick. As for the oil fill, I can see smoke inside the valve cover thru the opening, but something is holding it in.

I don't doubt the shop manager but I agree with Rich and feel the PCV is not 100%.

If your PCV system, especially oil trap, has never been replaced then get it done whenever you can. My 2 cents.

Is there something in the oil trap that will wear out?

I would think that it could be cleaned well, but I've not seen one in person (yet, it's coming VERY soon though!)

Oh! do we generally need a new gasket for the intake manifold when we take it off to service the PCV system?

Do these issues only relate to turbo cars? What sort of maintenance do we N/A drivers need to do?

Other than NA cars having a flame trap, the two systems work similar.

The flame trap needs to be cleaned. Check that the main PCV line (large) and the vacuum line (small) are not plugged or collapsed. I've seen the vacuum lines get plugged in the housing. Check for smoke coming out of dipstick or oil cap.

Servicing the full PCV system is a do-it-yourself which takes between 3-5 hours depending on how handy you are plus experience. My dealer charges 5 hours plus parts. PCV parts was around $150 Canadian. That includes intake manifold, throttle body and egr gaskets. You may need to replace the original factory fuel line and crimp-on clamp to a new flexible fuel line to a screw type clamp. This way, remove the intake manifold with the injectors still on it. I also cleaned my egr while I had it out.

i have this problem with the smoke in the tube....crud....i have to do this I guess...what a PITA...anyone who had this done professionally, how much did it cost you?

What is meant by cleaning out the PCV system...just wiping off all the sludge built up in there and replacing all the lines?

what's the part number for the collection of PCV hoses?
