So my plan is to swap out the engine in the 98 V70. My VIN code is 56 but I found a good engine that has a 53 code. My engine number is a B5254T and the 'new' one is a B5234T3. Will these interchange?

yes, but make sure you get a better turbo as the compression ratios are different... 2.3L was meant for a 15G+

The 'new' engine comes with a turbo.

Will I need the ECU from the donor car?

Still wondering if I will need to swap the donor ECU in place of mine... my car had the low pressure turbo and the newer one has the high pressure turbo, all intact.

You are just throwing in a 2.3L engine so I would install a 16T along with a 98 T5A ECU and be good to go.... What is the engine out of anyway?

The engine is out of a wrecked 98 V70, but I'm really curious about it because it had a manual transmission with the 2.3 engine. I think that option was only available for a T-5 model but I don't think the donor car was a T-5. And if it was paired up with a manual transmission and FWD, would the ECU be compatible with my AWD automatic transmission car? I'm going to get the ECU from it tomorrow as well as the VIN. I'm guessing that magicaljake is right- I'll have to install an ECU from a 98 V70 R car. And the 2.3 comes complete with the original turbo.

You can run the car with your stock ECU and turbo but it wont be as quick as it once was.

If the turbo is a 16T on the motor it was a T5 and that ECU will work with a 5spd or auto it doesnt matter.

If you get the T5M ECU for nothing then just sell it on here and use the above ECU which is at a great price. The T5M ECUs go for about $200 so you will not only get an ECU that you need but you make 100 bucks!

Is your GLT an AWD? Manual and auto T5 ecu's swap back and forth, have a tuned ST ecu from my auto that I swapped into my manual no issues. I'd keep an eye on your AWD parts if you swap in the T5 motor as all that extra power on a poorly maintained AWD system will pretty much destroy it.

Yep mine is an AWD and good call regarding the driveline stress. It never has had any issues in the driveline and sounds quiet and runs smoothly (no clunks, grinding, rattling, etc) so it should be OK.

Quite frankly after thinking about this today I'm not totally convinced any swap is such a great idea. The car has 200k and as an early AWD model it may well not be worth all the work. Parting it out would likely be the most profitable move at this point in time. I bought the engine at a pick-n-pull and paid very little for it so I could easily get my $ back on that. Is there a good reason I should continue the life-support or is it time to pull the plug?

Well keeping the AWD isn't a neccessity. You can do the swap, and if the parts fail, yank the drive shaft and go FWD and move on with life. Unless you insist that it stay AWD. I did it with my sister's 99 R, it's FWD now.

Sell the AWD to finance the motor and as long as you change your tranny fluid on time then you shouldnt have any issue. In my opinion it's worth it....

I wouldn't worry at all that the added stress of a B5234T3 motor (which does come from a 98 T5 equipped with 16T) would ruin the AWD. Keep in mind that the R AWD automatic has a B5234T6 engine which for all intents and purposes is the same as the T3 variant and uses the same 16T turbo. There's no difference in AWD components between the GLT AWD/XC, and R AWD.

Just do your best to make sure the AWD system is in good shape by ensuring that your tires are evenly worn and changing out the fluid in the angle gear and rear differential. Sounds like a good swap that you have going although personally I like the B5254T motor better...but maybe that's just because it's what I have.

No they dont ....

Auto will work in both , but a manual wont .

Well in any case it isn't going to matter for this specific application because I have decided to cut the line and call it a bad fishing day. As we removed the blown engine we discovered several other issues (torn CV boots, broken radiator mounts, numerous worn/brittle hoses...) that alone wouldn't be significant but added up with the installation (not to mention the new timing belt kit, RMS, serpentine belt, ECU...) have made the resurrection of the 98 beyond reason. Unfortunately it is worth much more as a parts vehicle at this point in time. I'm currently looking at some possible replacement vehicles this weekend and yes, they are Volvos. Thanks for all the guidance through this mess.
