Why? Why not?

I have the M66 in my V50 (and love the six speeds!), and was considering swapping one into my S70. Figured that the gear ratios should work out well, it would put me a little lower in the RPM range for highway driving (which I do an awful lot of) to get a few more MPG's, and it would be nice to have a six-speed in my S70!

Why would you wonder why?

Because it's harder than doing a 5-speed swap, and I hear there isn't a huge difference. Why not though, right?

I asked the question because I already have a M56 in the car, so I wanted to know what would be involved in putting in a M66. I figured since my car was already manual, it should be a lot easier...

Have you looked through the Project 6 build at all?

Also a fix is needed to lock out the reverse gate when the car is moving in forward gears. 6th and reverse are situated very close next to each other and when there's no lock the shifter will go in to the entrance of the reverse gate when shifting to 5th gear which will effectively block the 5th gear engage. Shifter needs to be positioned right before the 5th gear gate to engage. Next when shifting to 6th and applying to much force to the right the shifter might accidentally enter the reverse gate.

I didn't find this to be an issue. Reverse is still a push over from 6th - I never felt that I was in any danger of hitting reverse instead of 6th when shifting. I tried to use the stock S60R shift lockout, but it's CAN (or CEM?) whatever, it's a binary signal to the solenoid, not voltage. So, I don't have a reverse lockout.

Very little of that is relevant. The only details are regarding the rear mount bracket to the P/S rack, which in his case was different due to the size of the turbo used - a non-issue in this case, and the right side axle. If you run the it FWD - you may need a boot to cover the Bevel Gear sleeve - especially if it's not a secure fit on the diff splines - mine doesn't move so I'm not concerned about booting it.

Why would you wonder why?

I would wonder why for a number of reasons. Let start off with your "few more MPG's" thought. Do the calculations on gear ratios for the M66 vs the M56? No? Well your few more mpg's isn't correct because say your cruising on the highway at say. . 74 mph ? Well your M56 in fifth gear with 205/45/17 tires is about 2850 rpm. The M66 in SIXTH gear with 205/45/17 tires is about 2700 rpm. Is the 150 rpm gonna make a few more MPG's, nope. My second point would be if something breaks on the M66, and you need a new trans, the cost of a M56 vs M66 is at least $500 . . . and finally for drag racing, the M56 would be better due to the longer gears (just like the newer STi trans went from shorter gears to longer gears). And thats why I was simply asking "why". But hey, if you like the six speeds for shifting a bunch of times and you enjoy it, then go for it and good luck !

Hmm...all valid points...

I should have also asked the Pros/Cons question...

Although the M66 swap still in the planning stages, this thread will give me several points to consider before diving into it!

I'll have to recheck those cruising RPM numbers...I could've sworn that my V50 revs a lot lower at cruising speeds (205/50/17 on the V50 vs 215/45/17 on the S70)...

Thanks for all the feedback!

Well according to those tire sizes its going to be a about a 250 rpm difference at 74 mph according to calculations.

thats sounds nice, how many miles do you have on the swap and what power do you have?
I have swapped it last month, so I have only done 3000km with it. My car has +/- 320hp.

I have an m66 i think its a p1, the one without the snout on the right side axlemount, and im actually only waiting for my ecu to come home so i can run coil on plug with my 4.3 management for the complete swap.

I have noticed that the splines in the m66 looks abit different and i have been adviced to get an axle from the m66 and use splice it with the t5 axle to the wheel. But if yours run fine and have nu trouble with plenty of power i will do that.
I don't know what you mean with the snout? Isn't that something from the AWD M66? (I have a FWD M66). Axlemounts are looking similar as an M56 and I fitted both original S70 axles without any problem.

S70 Stick? Auto? What year? US spec axles from FWD don't seem to work as far as the right side is concerned - but that's with AWD M66.

Got pics?

We'd like to see what you did with the ford style levers on the trans...
I used the original stick of my car, which had an M56 in it until it broke. My car is from '97.
Don't have much pics from it, as the installation had to go fast (I wanted to leave on vacation).
The Ford lever and cable mount has been replaced with an S60 lever and mount.

Looks the same as my gearbox. You will have to change your gearlever and bracket to one that you can find on an S60. (I cut and reweld the bracket for the shifter cable to get it in the right position.)
I maneged to take a few pics that can help for who wants to do the swap.

Ah, OK - I didn't get what you were referring to - you mean the sleeve for the Angle Gear -that's not actually part of the trans/diff.

Very Nice Work. WHo did you tune?

I like your fabrication. I would have liked to have seen what you did to move the selector to the outside - it's not visible in your second pic. Did you just buy an S60 bracket & swap it over? The AWD trans has it already on the outside = comparison pic

You used a gearlever and cables from an s70 right? nad just used other clips for the cablemounts?

I started with the gearlever & cables from an '00 -plastic case. The cable clips are the standard ones - I enlarged the bracket openings to accept them.
