Alternator Questions

ok so her'es my problem,
about a week ago i started started hearing a clunk/crunch from the passenger side, it looks like the cv joint/axle needs to be replaced the boots are trash and the grease has spun out so instead of fixing the boots i opted to replace the whole unit i got from fcp...its in the living room nw waiting to go in tomorrow. along the way i started to hear an increasingly louder, (over about 2 weeks)hum/whirling noise. the guy at autozone hooked something (battery cables?)to the battery and pressed a button, the alternator clicked a sounded as if it was winding down...he said the alternator is on its way out. so as anal as i am i had to do some more research. i came across a test to see if it was bad...i started the car, removed the pos and neg terminals...it kept running indicating the alternator was fine. im so confused.

That is a monumentally bad idea. The battery acts as a voltage regulator on the charging system and it is easy to spike the ECU and the rest of the electronics to run without the battery hooked up. It is worth a second opinion from another auto parts store but the alternator testers have a load bank that forces the alternator to run at or near its rated capacity. When it is just keeping the motor running it is loafing.

so whats the next best way to test other than disconnecting the battery

I'm not sure about the fit....
I had it tested, and it works fine - 50 bucks + shipping and its yours.
