I am going to be converting my 96 850R to a m56 and I need to know some info about my options for the ECU. In the state of MD they require the OBDII systems to stay intact and that's the only thing they check for in our emissions tests every 2 years.

I have heard that the car won't run very well with the 850R auto ECU, correct? Will it actually throw codes or just run poorly?

Will a euro ECU from a turbo 96-97 car have the obdII system and will it work?

Can anybody reflash an ECU with a manual tune that will keep everything happy?

I tried to do some searching but it seems like this info is still evolving so was hoping to get the most update to date info.

Thanks guys!

Keeping the auto ECU will throw a code for missing trans ecu

you can get it to where just the manual switch is flipped.....IPD can do it

or if you want to tune also, try checking with TurboTuner

So what you are saying is the car will drive fine but throw a code for missing TCU?

Can you change the fact that it looks for auto or manual with TurboTuner?

The car doesn't run ideally with the auto ECU in and the TCU missing, but it definitely runs okay and relatively safely. The fuel cut is more noticeable as are the drops in RPM....besides that there is not much different. And yes, your arrow will be flashing indicating a missing TCU...code will be stored for it also.

with turbo tuner, they haven't come up with a way to flip it in real time using the software (unless something has changed in the last 2 months)....however, when you order one, you indicate whether you want for manual or auto....i think they were working on an "on the fly" switch within the software.....you can contact the vendors of TT for updated info.....benefit is that you can tune yourself and change tunes on the fly as you wish...you can also keep the car OBDII compliant for CA and MD.

And if you go with a RICA or IPD tune, see if you can specify that you don't want a euro/canadian tune...those are not OBDII compliant...you may run into problems plugging in the scanner to diagnose/read.

Actually, the good news is that we are just finishing testing a manual swap smog compliant OBD2 enabled solution. This should be available by the end of September. More details will be available later. :)
