nice work.... i can understand it, as a fun weekend car you might putt to the strip and back in with some buddys...or something...cool stuff!!

Ok I thought about it and I have some issues:
First is the ECU secured or is it just dangling there? to me it just looks like one small bump and your serp belt is going to shred your wiring
Two: How much did the hood hinges actually weigh? The hood doesnt sit right now... Maybe weld a small bend on the fender so the hood sits level
Three : The holes in the R bumper saved like 3 oz? The rear bumper might make sense (less build up of air) but the front?


I like your idea I just think the hacksaw was used a little too much.

Dont get me wrong though I do like your car a lot. Do you have sun roof? if so take that out and weld in a panel like russ did thats atleast 75 kg saved.

thanks, prices for T-5's have fallen so much over here the money i'd of got for selling it wouldn't of covered what i'd paid for the 19t etc so thought i'd just have some fun out of it

it is still an on going project so yes there is still quite alot for me to do, but thanks for your comments & suggestions

1, your right, at the minute the ECU is loose but do plan to move it to inside the car (or atleast secure it there)

2, the bonnet now has a bonnet pin in each corner so sits properly & flush, bonnet hinges & springs total upto 6kg

3, the idea of the holes in the bumper wasn't to save weight, its to get more to the intercooler & get moving around the engine bay

yeh the sunroof has been replaced with an alloy panel, it only weighs 18.2kg

Cool..I like it just Zip tie that ecu atleast to something. The moonroof needs to be welded in I'm sure you known. 20kgs is obviously worth saving. Please dont take my comments negativly I love, love, love, volvo's. Just Please make sure the computer doenst get turned to shreds. You definetly have more balls than me so go ahead man cut safely.!!!!!!!!

Removing the hood hinges up front, the dashboard, door insides, etc you've already dug into the structure of the car a bit. The trunk is designed to "collapse" when hit, but it often just clamps around the spare tire when the hit happens. You'd likely improve the stiffness by cutting and welding in a new plate, just be carefull cuz a flat plate placed with it's edge to the hit location (your rear bumper) isn't going to absorb nearly as much of the hit, and will transfer it along it's length/width. (imagine punching a box in the middle of a side vs on the edge) I would use a couple pieces to do it, not just one, so that they "fold" beter. Keep in mind that you want the trunk to crush if you get hit, welding in a 3mm (1/8") plate will just push those forces directly into the passenger cabin.

Personally i wouldn't touch the spare well, especially after cutting the bumper away; thats a pretty big safety sacrifice for a little weight. BUT if you're planning a basic cage and solo driving, have at it.

Have you stripped off undercoating yet? that stuff adds notable weight.

thanks for the tips & advice, still a bit wary of cutting the well out (but i'm sure itll happen lol)

i've took out all the smaller sound deadening pads from inside, but haven't got the scraper underneath the car yet. Never even thought of that tbh, thanks again
