theres a reason the radio volume can be turned up... it's to quiet all the dash crickets and the drone of the exhaust... I deal with it.

I think I may go with a medium size muffler and a Vibrant 12" straight through resonator.

I said that before I think you'll be disappointed with how loud the system will be. If you don't want to draw too much attention to yourself when cruising, and don't want much drone, you should be trying to fit as much straight through muffler in the exhaust as you can. Really, the only reason you wouldn't do that is because of funding. Straight through designs have next to no restriction on the exhaust flow, and muffle the sound accordingly  One medium muffler and a resonator will still be pretty noisy on the highway. Also, where did you find a straight through resonator?

I found a Vibrant straight through resonator both on ebay and various online stores, in 12" and 18" long.
So would a muffler like this be ideal? http://www.magnaflow...ne=main&id=8083

what are you planning on doing with your stock exhaust system? It's going to be rusted, and I dn't know anybody who would want to buy the stock exhaust minus the catalyst.

It seems you want a resonator to give it a specific sound... Ditch the 2 short mufflers and just go for the single longest one you can with the resonator. I would say ditch the resonator alltogether though.

If I ever decide to sell the car, or if I get bothered by cops for the new one I can return to stock.

I only want a resonator to make sure its not raspy or anything. Obviously I haven't made my final decision and I'm not planning on doing this till next spring, so I could change my mind. I may go with like a 6" round and 24" long muffler. hopefully that will be somewhat quiet enough?

24" long core I assume, not overall muffler. 6x24 would be a good size. I'm running two 6x20 (core size) and it is one the quieter side of after market. I will have to get a recording once my new camera comes in the mail....

No experience up north where you are, but I think with the sound your exhaust will be you won't have to worry about cops giving you a hard time. And if they do you could always just add another muffler to quiet it down a bit.

You know, you can always add another muffler later...24" is a huge muffler! I'd start with a pair of 18's and see what you think.

As far as CEL's go. I have stock dp and cat (gutted the cat) and then custom 2.5" cat back with one magnaflow race muffler. Sounds great, and will be getting a 3" dp soon. I only gutted the car because I didnt have money at the time for anything else and I live in Cali where cops are crazy. Anyhow, I used a spark plug fouler to move the o2 out of the cat a bit and so far no CEL's yet on a 99 car.

Yea but wouldn't two 18" mufflers be a lot quieter than one 24"? That would be 36" of total muffling compared to only 24"?

Also I just realized that they dont sell 24" long core mufflers, but they sell 18" core and 30" core, trying to decide between the two. Also I am looking at getting this cat http://www.summitrac...arts/MPE-54959/

I think that's the exact cat I went with. Good product from my experiences so far.

Don't get a 30" muffler, you'll have a hell of a time finding the spot to put it.

If you want your perfect sound I recommend doing it twice, may be a bit more time consuming but it's worthwhile.

Weld up the DP, and then weld in 1-18" long muffler and stop it shortly afterwards. Drive around for a couple of days to see how you like it. If it's too loud then weld in the 2nd muffler and finish the exhaust. If it's right, then just finish the exhaust.

Wouldn't a 30" muffler fit right in the middle where the stock resonator is?

yes, but it won't be super easy. I guess you could run the downpipe, cat, rear o2, a bit of straight and then the long muffler, then straight to the end.

But if you put in that 30" muffler you won't really have room for much else just because it's going to take up the majority of your straight pipe, and why make the hassle of trying to weld in another component in the rear where the stock suitcase muff goes? Lift the rear of the car and get under there to take a couple looks at the stock exhaust system and you'll see the best place to put your straight thru mufflers is going to be right after the rear o2, in the ~4ft straight you have until you get to the rear suspension. From the rear suspension to the tailpipe I wouldn't bother unless you really needed to.

Well yea thats what Im trying to avoid is putting anything where the stock suitcase muffler is in the very back, i want to jsut keep the components positioned under the center where that long straight is, and then just running pipe to the back with a tip at the end. Idk yet tho, if I did two 14" core mufflers I'd do them back to back, that would be the more expensive option, and then the other option is I could do a single either 18" core or single 30" core right in the middle. Going single will obviously be the cheaper option, which I'm trying to do, but not sure what will be most suitable and still sound the best.

Unless you get ovals wide enough that they don't fit in the exhaust/driveline tunnel

You mean it will just barely fit in that long straight section under the car?
