So after that Turbo101 talk I decided to pressure check my actuator and the rod does not budge even after 10 psi of pressure. It holds though and doesn't leak out of the pump?

Boost is somewhat on and off roughly twice during a power band run....between 3K and 5800. It's been getting worse I think. It's really hard to say.....the car boosts pretty strong and healthy I think. Maybe I'm just being paranoid but why the arm does not react to pressure cannot be the way it's designed.

Thoughts?

I often see old actuator arms that pull real hard to one side or another. Take the arm of the WG and give it a good tug (like I know you know how to do..). If it moves fairly easy, also try to open the WG by hand and see if its stuck.

The arm will pull freely and spring right back into place without issues. The wastegate does indeed open as well and moves freely.

If the actuator was dead, wouldnt you be overboosting?

Also, is it possible someone upgraded the wastegate (just throwing things out).

Seems kinda scary if it is broken, since to me it sounds like you should be overboosting like crazy :x

Well Aaron after you left I was thinking while I had the vac pump out i'd do mine :( . Pumped up to 4hg's and I could watch it slowly drop off, guess what i'm gonna be getting :D .

Yeah, at 10 psi the arm still did not budge hooked up to the hand pump.

Yes, that would cause over boost issues amongst other things. But the car spools 12 psi and holds just fine. I do see a spot in the power band where timing is pulled for about 300 RPM around 3500 or so. This was a safety feature that I asked be done when I got my tune.

Between shifts it does spike to around 14/15 but that is pretty common and doesn't cause issues. It's been like that since I got the ST tune back in December of last year.

I don't know.....this damn actuator's not moving but the car boosts like a champ, showing nothing abnormal.

Weird.......

I could upgrade the wastegate actuator, fact is though I do not want to open doors for more tinkering if I do not have to. A modification never ends without a following one.

So your internals are leaking by? Sorry to hear.....if it makes you feel better mine aren't but the damn actuator won't move when pressurized.

It almost HAS to be operating when I'm driving under load......my boost characteristics say so.

Haha, good luck.....I guess I'll wait for this issue to begin causing a problem to look further into it, not sure what to do......if it were a problem the car would not be boosting normally.

You used a vac pump to check preload they read in hg's, we need to hook up the air compressor set at a determined psi like 4-8psi and see if it moves, bet it does, needs psi to do that hommie not vac.

Gotta flip it to push psi, it was set to pull vac to check the preload

Most likely   thoght that's wht you was doing yesturday was checking preload. Think you was in a fog from being up all night working, 3rd shift sucks balls, your thoughts get all cloudy, I know did it for 4 years, never agian.

Come on over when your free and we'll hook the compressor up, or you could use a b-ball, they hold about 8-12psi, put the threaded needle end in the vac line and then needle into ball and squeeze and watch the WG move. But if you can move it by hand you should be good to go

Got a job in Dover tomorrow so i'm busy, maybe Fri. if your not busy.

No, Aaron. I am saying that it SHOULD NOT be opening more at 10 psi, the arm should be pegged out by 7psi. Thats why so many people these days are looking to upgrade the wastegate actuator because the stock has a crack pressure of some thing stupid like 3-4 psi where aftermarket ones have a crack pressure of like 7-10 psi.

Oh ok, gotcha.

I need to stop thinking so hard when I've been up for so many hours after working all night.

I wonder how the aftermarket actuators are working for people........

Works great. Faster spool up and less boost fade with my Garrett actuator. See my signature for more info.

Yeah but are they COMPLETELY issue free? I do not want something that's going to cause any sort of problems, the car runs/performs so perfect.
