Does anyone have any tips for getting the white plastic ball seat on to the shifter housing on top of the black ball?

I am trying to replace mine because the first one was cracked, but my install attempt was a failure.

I put the new piece in boiling water for 5 minutes, then tried putting it on...no dice. I put the piece back in boiling water for another 10 minutes...Still nothing. So I tried using a rubber mallet...Then the piece cracked.

Now I am out $30 and need to order a new piece. I want to make sure I put it on right this time. So does anyone have any tips or tricks with this?

And also, if you know what kind of ball grease (insert joke here) I should be using, please let me know. I bought some basic lithium grease from the auto parts store and I was using that to lube the ball and ball seat.

Thanks.

Considering how tightly it seats with the shift lever why not just remove the lever from the assembly when you get a replacement. They cost ~$30 new and you have already had one mishap. Uncertain on the grease part, but I doubt you will see a problem using the lithium type.

Thanks Yang. I will order a new ball seat and Volvo grease. I dont have a vice, but hopefully I'll still be able to take everything apart and get this done.

You obviously didn't try very hard. Just make sure you line things up correctly and you'll be fine. I've broken 2 on the first try (I have done 5 successfully thus far) and the easiest way to break it is to misalign the plastic tabs and take them off when getting the ball seat on.

Yea the we broke the first one during my manual swap but learned from the mistake. You have to apply extremely even pressure and then it will work. The 2nd try went fine. We actually used some axle grease IIRC.

Broke mine also, but didn't want to buy another.
So, I drilled a hole on each side and screwed it together.
It's held so far :)
