I just realized that there is an input shaft seal on manual transmissions. I was wondering how often these fail. Does anyone know? When I replaced my auto trans, I didn't replace the input shaft seal and it ended up leaking after I installed everything. If the seals in the m56's don't leak, then I won't replace it.

My m56H has 120k on it.

Thanks.

when i first installed my transmission, it didn't even have an input shaft seal and I didn't know about it, and right when i started driving it started leaking real bad....My friend and I had to take down the whole assembly again and put in a seal, it was a headache but still well worth it just to have a manual transmission :)

I would definitely put it in a new one if it looks jarred or worn down. It's an $11 piece and comes in 2 sizes, order both sizes and use whichever one that fits and then never worry about it again :). Use OEM only, DW ftw.

Thanks. Just wanted to know if it was subject to leaking, or it was the kind of thing you rarely ever have to change. I'll order the part and post the part numbers here.

I recently did the clutch and RMS on my T5M and I didn't do the front seal. At 230k there were no signs of leakage and I've never seen one go bad on an m56. Not impossible though. For the peace of mind it may be worth it, I just forgot about it in the process.

I will warn you there are two seals and it's a bitch to figure out which one you need.

Hmm...

I think I changed my mind then. The reason I am so hesitant is because I don't want to put the new seal in incorrectly. That happened with my RMS and I had to get that replaced. I'll check for signs of leakage, and if I don't find anything I think I'm going to leave it.

Don't listen to Dave, he doesn't know an M56 from a turd.

Leave well enough alone, they were fine on the sedan at 260K and the wagon at 85K. I highly doubt you'll have issues with yours.

$9 list price seal from the stealership.

I've never replaced one (or ever seen one leak). I'd say if it ain't leaking don't touch it.
