Hmmm, I thought for C70, '63' on position 6th & 7th indicates HPT engine, and '56' on same position mean LPT.
Do I have that wrong?

Here is Volvo's listing of engine codes, for 1997 to 2006 (5 cylinder only).

Note that C70 started in 1998, and Volvo didn't differentiate the C70 codes until 2001.
HPT engines for C70
"53" in 1998-2002
"62" in 2003-2004
LPT engines for C70
"56" in 1997-2002
"63" in 2003-2004.
Confused yet?

OK, look at type "52" which is the 2004- R cars. Note that it is the B5254T3 in 2004, and then B5254T4 after that. What?

I've provided the codes by code type first, and then took the information off of Volvo's site to show the codes as they were shown by year. look at
http://apps.volvocar...IC/vic2001.html
where "2001' in the year, and you can substitute your year, using 1997, 1998, etc consistently for each of the "2001"'s and you can decode your car. Works from 1997 to 2006.

You need the body style to determine which car you have:
Volvo Engines
body style 4th digit
YV1K 960
YV1L 850/S70/V70
YV1V S40
YV1N C70

Here is Volvo's listing of engine codes, for 1997 to 2006 (5 cylinder only).

wasn't going to quote your whole message, good info. I was going to say the same thing except much less detail hahahaha

just 63 is 03-05 lpt, 56 is 97-02 lpt :P

i'd get it if it is the right color combo for you. HPT is just a turbo swap and tune away...easy...did a LPT to HPT swap in my 99 XC70 and loving 17psi to all 4 wheels! My hpt c70 got a bigger HPT 18t.

I am selling my C70, do I have this right?

  • 2002 Volvo C70 HPT 2.3L
  • Condition: Excellent
  • Miles: ~78,000 miles
  • Color E/I: Moondust ( Beige ) / Tan
  • VIN: YV1NC53D42J027296
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA http://loc.is/1TUc

It's in great shape, and I have an extended warranty for it that I can transfer to the new owner that is good till 3/17/2011 or 98,979 miles (which ever comes first). I have already used the warranty to fix the front suspension, and I am going to get the AC worked on now before I sell it. I am only selling the car because I am moving to San Francisco, and no one needs a car in SF. I really enjoyed cruising around Santa Monica, Hollywood, Mulholland Dr. and Malibu in this car.

If you are interested let me know.

True, but the HPT has better power out of the box and can easily hit the 300 HP mark. Where as the LPT engine needs a little more help to hit that mark.

I need your help. Im from Ecuador and I have a 2005 Volvo S40 2.4L A/T,the engine is a B5244S version the VIN #: YV1MS664952064447, according to the S40 models, the S40 2.4L A/T has 140 hp and the S40 2.4i have 170 Hp. I checked for more info and the engine B5244S is for the S60.

Do you know how many Hps do my S40 have? why does my car has the engine of the S60? According to the owners manual the s40 must be equipped with the engine B5244S4 or B5244S7!!

I would like to know if that engine is Ok for my car and how many hps has the engine

Better CR for 16Ts though, in my opinion.
