what are the major pluses/minuses between the two when running them in the X70's and 850's? from what i've read it sounds like the 55w is brighter, but i think i remember reading somewhere that you should only use them in big housings or something? i might be totally off-base, though.

55w runs the bulbs hotter and shortens their lifespan. Keep in mind that the real OEM HIDs are all 35w and they outperform any of you guys who shove the illegal China crap HIDs in your stock housings.
55w will just cast more light all over the place. Some of it will go where you need it, but most of it will go places where you don't need it, such as into oncoming traffic.

I hate those crappy 55w made in China HID's kits that put light all over the friggin place. I always feel bad for those guys because their usable light is purple, which sucks for them

Try 4300k and you will amazed at how much better your visibility is, there is a reason why OEMs only use 4300.
Using quality Philips D2S bulbs also makes a difference over the Chinese stuff.
