I need an adapter cable for my HU-601 for my 2001 S-80. I want to use the HU and add my aftermarket amp. Do you know of a cable that converts the DIN connection on the back of the HU to an RCA out with a line for the remote power so I won't have to splice any wires? I plan on using my spare tire area for my 5 channel amp and sub. I will be running new speakers to the doors as well, but will be running all from the amp. Please let me know.

OK.

I checked out the cable.

It does not appear that it will work.

The negative terminals on the RCA plugs don't seem to be hooked to anything.

They should go to the amp for a common-ground configuration, shouldn't they?

Then the ground wires go to from the amp to the chassis, right?

I wanted to install the eclipse 3424.

Please help

Depends on the head unit. The stock amp expects a non-isolated ground. Most head units have isolated RCA grounds, some don't. Depends on what you need. By grounding the amp to head unit chassis, you get the identical non-isolated ground.

I made the cable for the most head unit scenerio, and can make a cable with the RCA grounds connected if you want.

I assume you followed the directions and attached the ground according to the directions?

That's my issue right now.

Since the HU ground doesn't go to the amp, I won't have a common (non-isolated) ground.

I haven't attached anything, because I'm basing my purchase on what works.

I would like to go with eclipse, though.

Thank a million, man.

You are the ONLY person who has been ANY help in this matter.
Cheers,

Jeff

Any idea on what pre-amp voltage the stock amp is looking for? 2V or 4V are options I have seen on various HU's...

Got my adapter in the mail last week, waiting to buy a new HU till I make sure I have everything spec'ed out correctly smile.gif

Installed my Alpine 9831 HU this week, using Slaters adapter, and though it worked great, I had some RPM related alternator whine. Slater was very helpful in getting it figured out.

I ended up first on my own just installing a noise filter on the 12V suppply to the HU, which helped, but did not solve it. I then put ferrites on the RCA cables, helped more, but not a complete solution either.

I then got real frustrated, and cut up the OEM DIN plug and Slater's adapter, and wired things directly, but did not use the DIN cable shielding. No worse, but no better.

Finally I did what I should have done to begin with and asked Slater for help. His recommendation was to connect the RCA shields with the OEM DIN cable's shielding.

With his help I got it solved! The problem with my setup is that the HU wanted the RCA shielding for each channel connected to the DIN cable shielding for each channel, and I also grounded the DIN cable shielding comming off of the ground and remote turn on wires to the HU chasis for good measure. My amp ground cable is on the HU chasis as well. No more noise!

I guess that means that for Alpine HU's Slater would want his adapter to have the RCA grounds connected to the DIN plug's outer metal coupler, which on the OEM harness connects to the cable shielding, and have users ground to the HU chasis...

Now I am truly enjoying some tunes tongue.gif

The 9831 was a bit of a pain to figure out, but once I got it tuned correctly it sounds awesome.

Thanks for the help!

Awesome! Yeah, I can make the cable you speak of. It's for the minority of HUs out there, including Alpines, that expect non-isolated grounds on the RCAs. It must be an Apline thing, because the stock amp is Alpine as well.

Anways, the non-isloated cable is no problem - just specify when ordering which one you want/need.

I WAS TOLD TO LOOK FOR A FACTORY AMP UNDER THE SEATS. DID NOT FIND ONE. WHATS NEXT. ANY WAY TO SPLICE THE SPEAKER WIRES TO THE OEM VOLVO RADIO? PLEASE HELLP. I JUST PAID $300 FOR THE EOM VOLVO RADIO. Are these still available? I'll be putting a new head unit in my '94 850, and after hearing the horror stories around in doing so, one of these adaptors might be handy to have!

Slater,

How do I go about getting a little "tech support" for a setup using your HU->factory amp adapter? I bought a used 1998 V70R in November and had to pull the "Radio/Amplifier" fuse since the battery drained every night so the care wouldn't start. I pulled the HU out and I didn't see anything obvious, but I was hoping you might have some insight into what I could look for or trace for the cause of this. I hate driving around with no HU!
