I posted a couple weeks back about my encounter with a deer on the way home from work. A deer came charging out of the woods and slammed right into the driver front fender of my Volvo (actually my wifes Volvo, but anyway). When I went to start the car after the accident, I noticed my CEL on. Got the code scanned at AutoZone and it came back P0446 Evap Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction. Because the canister is behind the fender I crawled underneath to check it out. All the hose look on and intake and connected fine on the canister. The Fender never caved in enough to come close to the canister so I don't think it would be cracked. I clear the code and it immediately comes back when I start the car. What else could it be? Are there other parts of the system that would trigger this code? I know there is a valve behind the radiator. How do I test this valve? Could some particles from the canister have gotten shook loose and messed up the valve?

If it is insured (either comp or collision should cover this), why not file a claim?

There's a good chance the force of the impact snapped one of the plastic nipples on the valve. I suggest you remove it and check it.

I have submitted a claim, but now it still needs to be fixed and I prefer nobody but me work on my cars.

What valve do you speak of the nipples breaking off of? Do you mean the canister? From what I could see the canister is intact. I couldn't pull it down enough to check really well because the large hose and crimpped on there and I didn't have enough room to get in there. I guess I'll have to wait until the fender is off to check it good. But again It's just strange because the fender never crumpled into the canister, there is still plenty of room aroudn the canister. In the Evap system there is only the canister and the Control solonoid (mounted by the radiator), correct? or is there something else in the system.

You have described the system correctly. The valve by the radiator, if you take it off and test it with a hand held vacuum pump, both ends should hold vacuum, if not then that valve needs replacing.

If the Evap valve was not holding vacuum, wouldn't the engine run rough? The Evap valve was changed 1.5 years ago when I bought the car because it wasn't holding vacuum, but the car was running real rough when it happened last time.

Problem found and fixed. There is actually one more solinoid in the EVAP system for a total of three pieces. You have the Evap Valve behind the radiator, you have the EVAP canister behind the fender infront of the front wheel and you have The canister shut off solinoid mounted behind the fender, behind the front wheel. After I removed the dented fender, I found this solinoid and it turned out the ground wire got pinched and cut during the deer hit and that is why the CEL was tripping on. spliced and soldered the wire and everything is good again in Volvo land. I actually found a White fender (to match my white car) off of a 93 in a junkyard for a paultry $35 big ones. Picked up a new marker assembly for another $30, still got to pick up a few broken clips for the moldings and I may get out of this pretty cheap and easy. The fender was filthy and I still have to wash it good to make sure the color matches good, if not I'll have it sprayed and blended.

one bad note. After reading a couple post about lossing the EVAP Canister, I just remembered that I forgot to bold in the canister. I'm trying to get my wife not to drive the car, cause I don't want her to loose it over a bump.
