Hi guys,

I did the ETM software upgrade two weeks ago. Right after that I found this symptom: if the car is parked for a while then in the first 200 yards it will lose accellation momentarily. After that the car is fine. D you guys notice the same thing ?

Can the dealer tell if your vehicle has had the update performed by typing in the VIN #

I had the update performed about 3 months ago and this past week it went bad again. Volvo replaced the entire ETM for free and put the updated software on and it is alot smoother, but it does seem like my boost isnt coming on as strong anymore.

Had it, along with the canned Tranny software upgrade, done a few weeks ago. It does seem to run a bit better and doesnt seem to hunt for a gear near as much.
But they let me know of the countless items that need to be addressed on the car. This is worn. That is old. Blah, blah, blah.

Had my car's software on the original ETM done a few months ago as my car was a shuddering and a stuttering. Ran great for a while, my fuel economy was back on track, but then, as of this past Friday, she's dead. She's throwing code P1053, which is DTC ECM-91F0, throttle unit, internal fault. Gonna try cleaning her and see if I can limp her over to the dealership...or get a tow. CRAP!

How about a repair guide for changing spark plugs on a '01 S60 2.4T ? It's not like the old days, when all you needed was a plug wrench. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When I perform recall 155 I download the software If there is a white sticker on the ETM I try to get it covered (white sticker are early ones) One of the problems, the PCV system when the system gets clogged usually from lack of maintance, oil gets into the intake system causing the ETM to get loaded with oil. As far as performance maybe dry.gif but the download is only for the ETM SN 30677023.. So many of these cars has new ETM's and will have a yellow sticker on them..

The dealer tried to sell me on my throttle being dirty and needing cleaned. Any thing that gets to the inside of the throttle has come through the turbo so if there is too much crap I've got more problems than a dirty throttle and anything on the outside I could hose off. The throttle was less than a year old at the time. I basically told them I was going to have the car a long time and they would probably have lots of chances to burn me but today just wasn't the day. I've had one of those throttles clear down to it's underwear. Near as I can tell, in-spite of what I've read, dirt just isn't what their problem is. But if you are wondering if your throttle is bad. If you dig very deep into it you won't have to wonder any more.

Here is a how-to repair guide for inner and outer tie-rod ends on a 2000 V70XC (would be the same on 1997-2000, and probably not all that different on later models. Hope someone finds it useful.

At approximately 206,000 miles my car wouldn't drive over 40 mph, the engine would rev up on its own and sputtered throughout the reduced RPM range. RPMs would not go over about 3500. Check engine light came on. Drove it to Volvo dealer and they replaced the throttle body at an out of pocket cost to me of approximately $1,000. They stated that it would have been covered up to 200,000 miles as this part had a recall. I do not feel that I was adequately notified of the recall. I received a letter about a recall last year and called the dealer to ask what it all meant since I did not understand it. The dealer said it was just a software upgrade and would only take about five minutes. I took the vehicle in for that software upgrade in March of 2007 with less than 200,000 miles on the vehicle and they did not say anything about the ETM / throttle body issue. It should have been replaced at that time.

Go to this website. They have lots of info about the class action settlement. You can apply for reimbursement and if it's denied there is an appeal procedure. Good luck.

Class Action Settlement

Here's a quote:

The benefits also include reimbursement of ETM-related expenses: if you incurred expenses related to ETM repair or replacement at any time prior to August 25, 2008, you will be reimbursed for the cost of the following items: parts and labor to repair or replace the ETM; diagnostic charges that resulted in repair or replacement of the ETM; taxes paid on ETM-related servicing or replacement; and towing and rental car expenses (for a combined total of $50.00) related to each repair or replacement of an ETM. To receive reimbursement for taxes paid, you will need to execute and submit the Tax Assignment Form which is included with the Class Notice and the Claim Form.

More details about the settlement benefits are contained in the Detailed Class Notice.

Well, I read through this whole thread, and I didn't really learn a whole lot... Perhaps someone can fill me in on a few items:
  • The "Throttle Control Module" (TCM):
    • What exactly is it?
    • What does it do?
    • Where is it?
  • What part of the Throttle Body are there issues with?
  • Are these issues (TCM & TB) something preventive maintenance can help you avoid, or do the parts just wear out after time?
I'm looking for a new car, and I was trying to avoid (like the plague) anything from '99~'02, but I've come across a really appealing '99. So I'd love to know if the TCM issues are really as bad as it seems, or if the whole thing is just way overblown... (I mean, I already know that AWD is a money-pit. Trying to find out if the TCM in '99~'02 cars are the same way.)

Thanks!

begin RANT:

2000 V70 XC SE 92k
First dealership Bay ridge volvo brooklyn ny, didn't even drive the car to confirm common ETM symptoms. Told my parents that there was no recall, nothing they can do unless they want to pay for it to be diagnosed. i was pissed, asked the rents to come to my house for xmas instead of us going to theirs. called my local dealer Keystone Volvo in berwyn pa. scheduled a app. for today. here are the results, codes stored in etm called for volvo's supreme ETM cleaning service. Service writed presented me with two packages with one optional service. First drive it the way it is package, two super duper supreme ETM cleaning package and option pack 1 would be sell it and tell volvos to go eff themselves. we chose the Supreme cleaning service includes removal of the etm to be cleaned, your time to be wasted, and no guarantee that it will fix your problem. initial driving impressions were the @ss cleaning helped 100%, then we got on the expressway. tried the cruise and the surging begins ever so slightly just like before. Now its a waiting game to see when the ETM fails completely. probably when the car is packed with luggage on a road trip somewhere in the middle of a hot @ss august summer vacation. priceless.......ETM warranty will expire in Aug 2010, lets see when this car fails. Million dollar question is hypthetically, "how can a ETM made to fail before warranty is up?" to my local dealers defense, they are only able to "warranty" what they can document. I have to be a reasonable person and FAULT VOLVO CARS of NA and not my dealership, they did reset my srs light for free on my convertible (i'm a dumbass and that's another thread).

This is ridiculous. I can't believe Volvo is still averting this problem. The warranty doesn't mean squat if they are the ones that determine if it's faulty or not. Furthermore, it's unethical.

#1) By the time it throws any codes, it'll probably be too late to prevent drivers from being endangered.
#2) Software upgrade is just a band aid to real problem. It's only going to delay the inevitable with the faulty units, for the few times it actually works.
#3) This just gives another excuse for Dealers and Volvo to ripoff customers. It's the MAF, that'll be 400-500$. Take it in, we'll fix it. Looks good, nothing wrong. It'll cost you $150 for the diagnostic fee. If it happens again, come back and we'll diagnose it again.
#4) How can you really prove it's causing the problems, without it physically dieing? In the beginning, the idling and stalling are so random, there's a good chance the dealer won't even see it happening.

I want to ditch my car so bad, but I don't even have the heart to see someone else have to deal with these constant revolving problems and repair bills.
