Did you buy that Plat wagon from Michigan that was on eBay for like $4600? Just curious.
I asked the same question a couple weeks ago about the rails. Apparently you can remove them easy enough, but you will need new weather strip rails for both sides ... the whole piece, from the windshield to the tailgate. You can get them new at the dealer for a lot of money, or used from someone here like the previous poster s40euro.
<edit> I think if you remove them now and wait for the strips you will get water leaking into your roof through the drilled holes.

Nope didnt get it off ebay, happened to be in my buddy's shop shooting the sht, and looked across the shop and there one was getting inspected, the guy was getting little stuff fixed to sell it,, I told the mechanic to slip him a note , if he wanted to get rid of it call me,, he called the next day, wanted 7K needed serious cleaning and a radiator , we settled on 6.5K he walked away. I've spent the last two weeks fixing little stuff , console lights, rear tailgate trim, radiatior my buddy put on cheap, $175, Needs two tires,, but interior is beautiful and its been well maintained mechanically , ordered r front bumper, rear wagon wing, plugs, cap/rotor, serious cleaning again,,,,
