depends on wheel width i believe most volvo wheels are 7inches wide so 225 is a good width you might be able to max out at around 245 but im not 100%, alot of tire manufacturers will list that info on their sites i believe Kuhmo does check there.
I might drive a 40 year old mans car but that means I can keep on tuning it for 18 more years before I need a new one!

215 is the biggest on a 7 inch wide wheel straight from my toyo rep. and he said that might be pushin it a bit. If you have a 7.5 inch wide then 225-235 8 inch wide max at 245ish

What Rims do you have?

caniso's and comets are 7.5" and you can fit 215 no problem.

handbook isn't specific, make sure that the measurement is specific to your car's wheels.

For performance you want your tire about 1 inch wider than your rim. So with a 7.5" rim thats something like 195 + 26. I would run a 225

Yup. 235 is a tad too big for 7.5"

Um no it's not, that guy is a fool if he said that. Stock mk3 supra has a 7" wide rim with 225's on it from factory. I know for a fact 245 45 16's will work on a 7"rim if the stock tire was 225 50 16 the tire will bludge a bit but they fit.

Its not about rubbing. Its about rolling the tire off the rim. If your going for looks and poor mpg 235 is fine. If your going for performance any wider than 1.5" wider than the rim is a poor option.

Can you please elaborate.... How is going from 235 -> 245 on an 18"x8" rim gonna dispatch MPG? Also, if a 245 is wider than a 235 that means MORE rubber on the ground shouldn't that fact alone = better grip? I mean really are you saying we should run 215's or 225's for "better" performance?

Again its not about rubbing. If it was you could just roll the fenders add a spacer and run a 315 tire on you rim

It's about compromising the stability of the sidewall, specially if the tire is underinflated.

Man I am glad that when a rice kid shoots his mouth off that other people know whats really up. If you want to roll the big rubber go ahead but a TOYO REP. told me that he's been selling tires for 20+ years, he knows his stuff. And PS the comment made about rolling a tire OFF the rim is correct a buddy of mine tried to run 245's on a 7 inch wide rim and he rolled a tire at 50mph through a real nasty turn in an 02 GTI with 17's. I mean really though go for it the world could use one less steaming pile of first gen. supra crap!
I might drive a 40 year old mans car but that means I can keep on tuning it for 18 more years before I need a new one!
