My blower seems to be making squeaks and chirps intermittently and it also varies with weather and blower speed. At low speeds on some days, it chirps and squeaks a lot. At high speeds it chirps and squeaks occasionally. I've also noticed that rainy days will increase the frequency of chirps, and it's very annoying.

Is there a way to fix this without buying a new one? Also, is it easy to take out? I don't know how the airbag unit will affect the removal and reinstallation.

Some people have sucessfully pulled the fan and greased the bearings and had no problems.
I however was not so lucky. Pulled my fan out and sprayed lithium grease on the two bearing points. Within 200mi my fan was dead.

I ended up buying a new one complete with the cage. Cost about $130 I think.

You will probably end up getting a new one...but it should do you good. The airbags are not a problem, you do not access the motor from there, you go in from the bezel under the back of the hood. Check the Haynes manual if you can.

I have had this problem with my 98-S70 GLT since the day I purchased it. The dealership has no clue on how tro fix it. The most likely issue, though, is that the dampers are opening and closing quickly and are out of wack. I saw a post that discussed a calibration procedure for the dampers but Volvo will need to do it. Good luck. I just live with it.

Hey guys:

I had this same problem w/ my '95 850 GLT and I fixed it by R&R the fan motor + cage. It's a simple job, but the part is spendy. I'd go with an OEM fan, the one I purchased doesn't chirp but it seems louder than it should be.

Thanks guys. The squeaks and chirps come from inside...but I have to R&R it from the back of the hood?

Quoted from Chopper: "The airbags are not a problem, you do not access the motor from there, you go in from the bezel under the back of the hood."

Thanks again. I'm thumbing through a Haynes manual now, hopefully I can just remanu the thing and not spend a dime.

Check out the Bay13 instructions for passenger dash access.

You'll need to pull the glovebox too to get to the blower fan.

I was wrong! smile.gif
Sorry about that. You still shouldn't worry about airbags though.

Yes - these are good instructions. Took me about an hour to complete on a 96 850.

Yeah, they were good.... once I figured out that even though there was only 3 nuts to remove from the knee bolster, there still is 4 studs. wink.gif
