Just as an FYI to anyone who is interested in the Falken FK451's...

Do NOT keep these tires mounted on your car during the cold, winter months.
When I ran these tires on my 850 T-5R, I kept them mounted on the car and drove in the winter only when it was not snowing/raining/icing.

The following Spring, 3 of 4 tires suffered rubber breakdown in the tire sidewall. The cracks in the rubber were only visible when the tires were un-mounted.

Summer tires should not be used or mounted at ALL, in the winter.

tire breakdown can also be attributed to the liquid lubricant the show used to mount the tires. Oil based lubes can deterioate rubber just like what you described but eases tire installation alot!

Both! I imagine the characteristics of the rubber in the tire were permanently altered from low temps.

I had a customer who had the same tires on his 2000 S40 and suffered a tire failure on the highway going 80+ miles per hour. The tire disintegrated at the sidewall. He was left with a half inch strip of rubber on the wheel. You know how you can see truck tires on the highway? That's what happened to him. I contributed it to a poor tire size selection given the max load weight for the tire. But when I unmounted my 451's, I then saw the cracks in the sidewall. The cracks were not visible when they were mounted.

This is definately something that should be inspected for.

tire failure like what you described will be from running the tire when it is flat. When ANY tire is run flat the side walls will start to heat up and disinergrate. Modern tires are contructed with radial tire plys to prevent what happened in the good ole days when there were inner tubes in the tires. Tire plys give the tire more strength and durability.

These complaints of premature tire failure, eneven tread wear, or even fast tread wear is all dependant on alot of variables.

Tire failure, ie blow out stems from low tire pressure then driving on the tire with low pressure = shredded tires.

Uneven wear goes back to tire pressure and/or alignment issuesand/or suspension issues

Fast tread wear maybe a combination of tire pressure, alignment, driving style, and suspension components being worn out.

With treadwear at 280 theoretically you should get 20-25k out of them.

I'm not a falken dealer but i do sell alot of tires and i seen my fair share of "PROBLEMS" but usually not due to tire failure. Actually only got 4 nitto neogen's back for warranty for out of round when they first came out and 2 Nangkang NSII 245/35/20 size.

Rule of thumb, if you feel your problem is a true problem. Call the manufacture! I called Falken about a tire that was not bought from me and the gave me a RA and i got credit for a new tire! The nangkangs did have a factory defect in them and they gave me two new tires! same with the nittos. I'd never know if i didn't ask either!!!! Instead of saying that the tires are horrible(personally i'd do the smae) check with the tire MANUFACTURE not the retailer about any know issues. there could have been a batch of bad tires out there. FYI tires have date/production codes on them, that's how they can "pro-rate" you tire for wear and stuff like that!

Excellent suggestion! I think as consumers we're sometimes all too willing to lay down and take it from these corporate giants. Taking time to communicate concerns and research possible solutions seems to pay off.

the point blank to all the negative reviews is that these are a BUDGET tire...

they do wear QUICK

they do get noisey with wear

ride is pretty nice, even at 42psi

you need to run high pressure to keep from side wear

wet traction is meager...especially just after it starts raining and the pavement is releasing the oils e/t/c

I would say, save your dollars and spend some real $ on some nice rubber

Yes i agree with this somewhat. BUDGET is the game and cheap is the game.

I respect your comments about the 451's George but I ran them for 20,000 in Tennessee in both 90+ and way below freezing temps for 2 years and had them rotated right on time by very professional tire shops the entire time. Never experienced what you did. I really gave them h*** this spring about a week before I got my new ones and they were quite worn by then and they still gripped like a monkey. I did keep dressing on them constantly. Maybe that impeded the rubber breakdown. That's hard to confirm though.

I'm 44 with two little kids (who are never in the car during intense driving) so I'm no dare devil and very sensitive to safety issues.

As for my performance tire experience I used to run Michelin Pilots but they went away way tooooo fast at $240 each and proved very tricky in the wet toward their end.

Performance wise for the 451's, if you're not tracking the car these tires work great for very spirited driving for 90%+ of the population. You're problems aside of course. But I call that a fluke. However, if my new ones do as you report I'll let you know.

Cheers.
