So I finished my manual swap with problems..... I would greatly appriciate some help.

The car worked fine, drove it for 15 min. Was very happy =)

But

1. My speedometer does not work

2. Tracs does not work

Any one have any ideas on how to fix this?

My Car is a 96, and I bought a M56H.

My understanding is that the speedo gets its information from the ABS...

You are right, the speedo gets its info from the ABS unit. If the speedo doesn't work and the ABS light it on, it sounds like the control unit is disconnected.

Hmmm... I thought that when doing a tranny swap, the speedo recieves it's input from the speed sensor, and if that doesn't work, then people have tapped into the ABS to overcome that?

I am probably wrong, but just throwing out other things to look for...

On 95 and older, there is a speed sensor on the transmission. On 96 and newer, it comes from the ABS unit. This is why swaping in a 96-97 trans to a 95 means the speedo doesn't work anymore.

tup.gif Got ya, thanks for the clarification. I guess I have read too much of Doug's and CJ's swaps, both being 95's rolleyes.gif

Then thing that dosent make sense is that My car is a 96 and I bought a M56H so is is from a 96 or 97 volvo cant remember. But do I have to plug anything in for it to work?? or does the ABS just sense the wheels.

Driving with out knowing how fast you are going when a cop is following you defintly puts your heart on the edge (trust me i know)

but now i just realized something my CAR is a 96 my old engine died so i put in a 95 motor in there, so right now i have a 95 motor and a M56H ...... But the motor should not have anything do do with the speedo ...right??? Can one want to confirm this?

That's correct. You've got a little gremlin in your wiring harness eating at your sanity. The motor is not related.

By the by, 1st gear tops out around 20-25 mph, 2nd around 65, 3rd around 80-90 (IIRC). So.. that should give you kind of a general feel of how fast you're going.

ABS connection number 6 on controller, Y-BN wire (Yellow-Brown?) to Dash connection A:3 should be speed wire. Doesn't make a difference for AT or MT as far as I can see

So if I connect my old speed sensor wire to that ABS pin I should get a speed reading? Will it be accurate?
Thanks,

It should be present already. From what I can see the speed sensor on the TCM is only used for the AT itself. At least it is driven from and gives input to the TCM. After that I can't find any speed reference leading from the TCM to the dash unit, ABS controller or ECU.

find a cop and ask him to help you out with radar. tell him you need todo some fine tuning "dont tell him it doesnt work, but just a bit off, b/c its illegal for it not to work"

Jeremy,

If you have a 96 car your speedo should work without the engine or trans in the car. It senses speed from the abs sensors on the half shafts. You must have damaged or forgotten to hook up a connector.

OH, you need the speed sensor in the transmission, which you don't have on the 96 trans. You may be able to pick up the signal off the ABS at the wheel, but it will take some research to find out the frequency, etc, etc.

Good Luck
