I have an exhaust leak that is definately coming from the exhaust manifold area.

You can smell it pretty good more when cold before it heats up and seals better as things expand with heat.

I have 147K on it and I'm wondering, which is more likely the cluprit, flex pipe or exhaust manifold gaskets?

I'm just wondering what I should do first because I am having trouble pinpointing the exact location of the leak, I just know it's coming from the exhaust manifold area.

I asked a local dealer and was told they rarely ever see the exhaust manifold gaskets go bad, even at higher mileage, which I found a little surprising.

I'm really thinking it's the exhaust manifold gaskets needing replacing. I'm just a little reluctant being access looks kind of tough and I'd hate for an exhaust manifold stud to break or something, even if pblast'd good and soaked beforehand.

Is it common for the downpipe nuts to come loose and I imagine I risk breaking a stud there if I try torqing them down a bit?

Thanks in advance for any helpful info . . . .

Are you looking for speculation as to where the leak may be?

Open the hood, and have a look for yourself. It's the only way to pinpoint it.

With owning these two 850's, another one earlier, and being on Volvospeed a while, this exhaust leak is not common especially with a stock system. I think they're one of the best around.

With the cold weather around look for where the white smoke is coming from. Look from the engine bay and below the car? Ignore the smoke out the tailpipe. smile.gif

Right, as I said, I have and no I'm not asking anyone to guess the leak.

It is coming from the exhaust manifold area specifically as I have already pinpointed, just not sure if it's coming from the flex pipe or exhaust manifold gaskets and was wondering if one was maybe more common than the other.

It's all pretty much in the same area (flex pipe right below the exhaust manifold), it's not like my nose can seperate or distinguish exactly which one the exhaust leak is coming from it being that close together.

I haven't seen any white smoke, it's not that bad but noticable and definately an exhaust smell builds up in that area. I guess I'll get underneath and have a look at the flex pipe and exhaust manifold from underneath and see if I can see any white exhaust smoke from a typical cold startup. Thanks . . . .

My exhaust manifold gaskets went bad at 161,000 miles. I didnt smell anything much at idle, but when I hit boost above 15psi it smelled very bad. I was also very worried about breaking a stud, but surprisingly all of the nuts came right off with barely any effort, some studs even came out with the nuts on them. Youll have to pull the turbo to get to all the bolts and remove the manifold, its about a days job, well worth it IMO.

My vote is with TorqueSteer on the exhaust manifold gaskets - I can't imagine the flex pipe being under so much strain it would rupture and fail.

A good check is to pick up some SeaFoam. Use the fact that it smokes like the Marlboro man to "amplify" the leak. I did this very trick to verify a poor seal on the conical flange of my aftermarket exhaust.

I have a leak around my exhaust manifold which my MOT inspector could see on his exhaust analysis and I can now hear it on starting the engine. I had the clutch replaced a couple of years ago and I bet the manifold experinced some stress as this was all levered about. I'll get it sorted by the garage 'cos the bolts on these things are always well rusted and impossible to get off without lots of heat.

You can get a mate to partially block the tailpipe, opviously not more than a second or two at a time, while you look under the hood where the gases are leaking out. I have heard of T5's with cracked exhaust manifolds but as ALvinL says any problem with the stock system is rare.
