Oh yea no, this is a 98 T5M ECU that will eventually go into a 98 AWD car. Both are M 4.4 I know that it will physically work, I'm just hoping this is a good alternative to finding a European ECU for an AWD Manual car (very hard to find used - even in Sweden I think).

My question is more - I shouldn't get a CEL at all once I use a Manual ECU correct?

Thanks for the TCUs! I'm sure they'll come in handy for some one at some point down the road.

You should be fine.

Sure thing - just give me a few hours until I'm home and can look. I think there are 2 different T5M ECUs for the U.S. market. I know one is 450 for the last 3 digits...the other I think is 608 but I'll have to look to confirm.

You can use the auto ECU, I ran that in my 97 855 for a full year before switching to a manual ECU. The problems are:
-jerky car when you let off the gas since RPM's drop quicker
-shifting takes a little getting used to for the same reason, you have to be a little bit more gentle with the clutch
-CEL for P1618, missing auxiliary input/output, which is the code for your missing TCU.
-Don't run your TCU, or you will trigger other codes and have a flashing arrow in the dash.
-You will run lean when you let off the throttle (not lean enough to trigger a code but leaner than a manual ECU)
-You won't pass inspection b/c of the CEL.

A friend has a 97 S70 N/A, he swapped the engine with a T5 with an automatic ECU, it is jerky when letting off the gas, the reason is because the timing is being dropped a lot (retarded) to allow engine braking with the auto tranny. To fix it, go to your local ECU remapper and have this fixed, the timing region is about 10-15 degrees to low. I can do it, but it'll be expensive sending the ECU half way aroung the world. I'm in Jakarta, Indonesia tongue.gif

So I bought this ECU off of ebay UK. It came off of an 850 T5 manual police car. According to the ad, there is a possibility that the chip was possibly chipped. I took some pictures here and I was wondering three things.

1. Can someone confirm that 851 ecu is truly a T5 manual ecu?

2. From the pictures, is there evidence of "chippage" wink.gif

3. Is there someone somewhat local to me (currently) that has a swapped 850 Turbo manual that I could put the ECU into to make sure it works? I just want to make sure its not a dud before I do all the work.

1. Can't confirm if it's a manual ECU, but it is an ME4.3.
2. Doesn't look like it. the standard flash chip looks like that off the factory, the dot matrix printed sticker (1267......) is the software number. If the ECU has been re-chipped, the flash chip is usually socketed.

Yeah, I knew it was 4.3. I just need to find someone with a manual that I can just put this in quick. I am thinking of making up a database here on the site with a list of the 850 swaps.

Send it to me, I'll try it and send it back.

Shipping is only about $10-$12 one way.

Yeah I might do that. Know anyone in New England who has done the swap? Otherwise, I will send it to you.

alright. I just want to double check with ya guys, the ecu with 851 won't work with 96-97 cars with manul swap. right?

I talked to Matt, and can't find any single 849 in couple European countries. I found a list of all ecu's that were made for volvo 850, but 849 is not in the list

Ilya:

I did, I'm sorry about the typo. Yes, a 549 ECU is like the holy grail now with all the manual swap people asking for them. I'm actually 3 deep now, I have 3 people who have either paid or expressed a strong interest in a 549 and are still waiting on them.

If you are looking for standard European T5 and R maps then have a look at Chiptuners.org. You will need to register and in the 'Original' files section you will find a list of Volvo files. They look like manual/auto variants. Bosch ecu numbers are attached so you can find the one you want.
01-03 Volvo 855 T5 (saddly missed)
05-09 Toyota Estima (Veg Burner machine!!!)
08-09 1998 Volvo V70 TDI - 195bhp and rising. Who needs a T5 !!!
