(where it was installed; I had to pay him in cash if I wanted something other than legal)
I have yet to be pulled over in NV for it. I doubt I will ever get pulled over in CA (where I live) for it because I would assume that most cops in CA wouldn't bother with a car with license plates from a state whos tint laws they don't know.
I run way less than 70% on both the Yellow T-5Rs but I don't drive them much so I might have just gotten lucky. I have passed a lot of cops and not been pulled over but maybe they don't bother with that kind of thing in my town. I usually drive with the sunroof open which makes the tinting appear to be less tinted than it actually is.
I have to say that the darker the tint the better the car looks. Since CA allows any tint to your back side and rear windows I would get as dark as possible all the way around (well, not on the windshield). If you get a ticket just have the front ones changed to legal...shouldn't cost too much and in the mean time you get to drive around a blacked out ride. I can tell you this, from all my time in the desert the tinting sure helps with heat and since L.A. is a desert I would guess you will like that aspect a lot too.
Two points of interest...with super heavy tinting I have a hard time backing up especially at night. When I pull into a parking lot I always park back side in. It is easier to back into a spot when everyone can see you then to back out when they can't. Also, I have had complaints from rear passengers that they can't see much out of the car, again, especially at night. Not sure I care much since the only reason they ride in my car is because I am the only one with four doors...and luxury leather interior to boot. LOL I find that when I am in a car with no tinting I totally notice it even when wearing sunglasses. Then again, I live in an area with a lot of sun. Maybe if I lived in other parts of the country where there is less sunlight I wouldn't really care.
Dude, go dark!!!

I had my cousin's BMW done at the same time my Maxima was done, at 20% all around, and she never had an issue in SoCal (mainly the I.E.), but she did get pulled over in Stockton (she goes to UOP), but the officer just gave her some kind advice about how she should voluntarily remove her tint....It's been a year since then, and the tint's still there, except for the scratch marks from her dog, Daisy.

Mass isn't too anal about tint but NH can be depending on the town. Staties can be anal. I've been pulled over from across the highway for tint by one.
I had to register my basement as an NFA item.

I haven't heard much about trouble from troopers with tint unless you get stopped for something else. But I've heard plenty of stories about tint hastle from local cops. I've got 35 on the front, 20 on the rear. Passes inspection, and I've yet to be questioned about it. I imagine if you have the lighter front versus the darker rear in a state where the law requires that, they probably assume you got a lawful tint job.

I really need to make a new sig pic. Nahhhhhhhh

I have 35 all around. I get 'breaks' in some towns from knowing many LEOs, however I haven't had any town cops that didn't know me pull me over for tint, either. I have had staties follow me into gas stations and cross the median for it, though. I also had one drop a speeding ticket in MPH to be $50 less, then decide to give me a $50 tint ticket.

Of course you can. If you had them put on 50% tint on the front windows it'll probably meter closer to 40% since almost all automotive glass has some tint in it already. In almost every state it's what the combined VLT (visible light transmittance) is, not what the film that was installed is, so if he meters your windows it'll read lower than 50% VLT.

I'd think any good tint shop would tint the windows taking that into account, no?

I've never met a tint guy that cared enough if you didn't say anything. Half their business comes from being 'flexible' with the law anyways.

I said I want "legal tint" but 50% is so light it doesn't even matter even if it's truly 45%. I wouldn't have wanted it any lighter anyway and the receipt is in my glove box so I could probably talk my way out of a ticket for tint even though tint tickets are normally tacked on to speeding tickets etc.

Got a ticket for the fronts - but that was because I was pulled over for over reasons. In NY, the fronts must be clear, which basically means factory tint.

I had 35% on my 965.... never an issue

35% on my 245... never an issue.
