imo anything 35 and above is kinda pointless(not bashing just my opinon)
The point is to protect the interior and reduce the heating from sunlight; here in Tucson that is important. I tried 38% (the lightest non-metallic tint the shop stocked) on the windshield, but it definitely cut down on the visibility at night. I had it changed to this tint, just for the front windshield:
Solar Gard Ultra Performance
It definitely is a heat and glare improvement over the untinted windshield, without cutting any night visibility. Should also reduce long-term sun damage of the dash and interior. Recommended.

20% blocks around 45% heat where 20% home tint blocks almost 80%

Well this has been a good one to read, I have not done tint yet, and this on the windshield sounds great , but I was thinking 35-40 on the rest myself...

There's where I like to go for the tint laws (they list both USA and Canada laws).
As you can see, the legal limits in Texas are: 5" Windshield, 25% front/back side (car), and no limit on the back window.
I bought this car with 35% all the way around, but that's nowhere near dark enough for me. I had 5% put on the back recently, and I love it. I think the 35% tint on my sides has faded, and the place I got my back window done has a 30% tint that will keep me barely at that 25% level when you factor in the UV protection that is inherent in the windows.
Still... I wanna push my luck o.O My mom used to have 17% or 18% on her front windows, but she had to get it removed and reapplied every time she had to get her inspection done. I really haven't heard many of you talk about your state inspections (some of you have). Do some states not check the window tint during inspections? You can't pass if you have a tint that's too dark unless you bribe the guys doing the inspection or get it removed temporarily. I'm more worried about that than I am about trouble with the cops. I don't know what's pushing your luck to even be able to bribe inspectors, too. I want to get 15% on the sides, but that would read way below the limit. Plus, the tint place I've always gone to has said they won't give me a lifetime warranty like they normally do if they have to do an illegal tint.
Faded 35% just isn't dark enough for me, though, especially now that I have a black car.

As far as inspections, I roll all the windows all the way down and pull it into the inspection station. I go to the station where I know they are a little more lax about stuff and i'm usually A OK.

Virginia is 50% legal
All tickets I have gotten have been State Police...never been bothered by local cops.
I have 20% from the front doors back on the Yellow sedan been given 5 tint tickets in that car and pulled just for that. Its a freaking tint ticket magnet.(its going to be changed to 35%)
I have 20% from the front doors back on the blue wagon.... got a pulled for speed and got a tint ticket to go along with the speeding.
I have 35% from the front doors back on everything else(except the P1800es) and never been bothered.

Im gonna get my new car tinted 15% again soon. However, cops will sometimes use it as an excuse to get you for other things, so take it with a grain of salt.

You gotta consider where alot of people live. I live here in nazi tint land as well (irvine,Ca). I have around 15% all around on my old car, and 35% on my new car. Ive never been pulled over with the 35% tint, but I have been pulled over 3 times for my other car. However, in the end I beat the cops by doing a little trick seen here:
That's what I did.

obtaining the certification from a physician indicating that the owner or another person being
transported in the vehicle has a condition that qualifies for the exemption. Provides that the owner
is responsible for submitting a copy of the certification to the Secretary of State.
Provides that the Secretary of State shall issue distinctive registration plates or plate stickers for
the exempted vehicles Provides that the Secretary shall issue the plates immediately upon
receiving a physician's certification that an applicant qualifies for the plates.
