Just to clarify, does "color sanding" mean sanding the paint itself (w/ at least 1500 grit paper) before applying the clearcoat, or the clearcoat, followed by polishing?

thanks

Yes color sanding is sanding the paint before the clear.
Here is a good article on color sanding..

Nope. You color sand after clear coat, then wax, etc. It mentions that in the article. You are actually sanding the clear coat for the mirror finish, not the paint itself. Unless of course, you have a one-part paint job.

Yeah, you never sand the base coat, only tack it if it gets dusty before applying the clear. You "colorsand" clear starting with 1200/1500 on up.

Failskates for all you

And I always sand between coats unless its a plain jane paint job. Tack coat and a wet coat, and repeat for however many coats I am applying. A lot of times on black or metallics I will blend in 50% clear on the last coat.

It doesn't say anything about sanding a basecoat on that link. That is for sanding a Single Stage paint job.

It was a fail on several levels. To the OP for not searching and to others for saying you never sand base coats. tongue.gif

I tried your method on a spoiler with sun fade and a damaged clear coat, works wonders. Thanks for that info Chuck.

Clear coat flaking, so I had to remove it completely so that the shop could just shoot some clear on it. They were OK with me playing with it prior to bringing it in.

The color was Olive.

Obviously, you sand base coats during the painting process. You have to. But, that isn't "color sanding"

"Color sanding", is, by definition, is getting a mirror finish on the final coat, after clear coat, before wax, sealer and glaze.

So, fail back atcha. Re-read the OP article, and learn.

Because every car has clearcoat.

Yeah Tony, I love the paint on the wagon (no clear) so much more than the sedan (clear, partly flaking off on roof).

Im 90% sure they clear the spoilers though (someone else can back me up on that). My paint is looking a little rough on the spoiler and I have done nothing but take care of it the way I take care of the rest of my paint (which looks good IMO). I might have it resprayed and paint the lip black when I get a new R bumper.

Because the spoiler is plastic and not really connected to the car it retains ALOT of heat which ages it more rapidly. Imron FTW

I have never heard of sanding the base coat between coats and I have painted cars and done a lot of research.

Not true. A lot of cars including BMW and Volvo have Single stage which is a base and clear combination. Thats why when you polish some of th early red 850's you will get red on your buffing cloth.

If you polish the spoiler do you get the color of the paint on your rag?

Tony: Sedan spoiler, its paint code will become 418, burgundy, just like the rest of the car.
