Kinda like what tyconn said, if you had 2 ECUs, you have the Fuel computer and the ignition computer. So, since you don't have a TCU in either car(manual cars = no TCU), 2 computers is all that should be in the box.
They SHOULD be interchangeable through the years. The name for the system i've always called LH3.2. I've known 93's to always have LH3.2, and i have said all NA's up to late 96 were LH3.2. Yes, there is slight differences in the tune (Removal of EGR, removal of VVIS), but 93 and 94 will be very similar. There have been claims that 94.5+ is ME4.3, but no one has been able to provide a source to prove this, so take it on a case by case basis. If it was ME4.3, you would have one ECU, not 2, so you can automatically rule it out with the 2 computers.
97 NA's are the only ones i know for sure you will potentially find ME4.3 on (for NA's, of course).
Being a manual, the tunes should be very very similar. Keep the ignition computer and fuel computer in the right spot, and i would say your fine.
As for what is the cause, make 100% sure the harness itself on the CPS is good. Make sure the TPS is plugged in good. I would actually cycle the battery before doing anything else. Undo the battery, touch the positive to the negative to fully discharge the ECU and entire system. After you do this connect it all back up and give it a shot. idk if there is any impact sensors or the sort that might cause no-starts, the only things in the front of the car are those on top of the radiator fan. Bunch of relays. Idremember what all is up there on NAs, normally only look for the fan relay. There *MIGHT* be an ignition relay up there, so check ALL of those connections, make sure all the relays are good, plugged in, etc..
I doubt the ECU took a dump, but, anything is possible...

I know you say it isn't overheating, but, are we 100% sure that your radiator fan is functional?
I don't trust the gauge that well....but, it might be like my 93....replaced the head, afterwards i have a small coolant leak again. Haven't traced it 100% yet, but i had Barrs stop leak in the system before hand for the heater core.
Point is; the PO might have bought one of the cheaper brands of stop-leak that likes to form balls....specifically some of the ones marketed for headgasket repairs...
I would bet money on a blockage before HG for this reason. Unless you knew the PO and he promises otherwise, i would assume he would be willing to try anything to bandaid the HG before dropping the serious $$

depends on the year 850 NA your talking about.....to determine the value of it that is. The tune on a turbo would be awful even if it was a ME4.3 NA tune. If its LH3.2 then uhhhh dont even think about putting that in...
