Some of A/M HU's only fire up the antenna control when the radio is selected.
Power it up in CD mode or some other input, you'll get nada on purpose.

There's also a chance that since your Pioneer was originally installed in a
car with a hosed antenna, you may have smoked the HU's antenna output.
Not remarkably likely, but certainly possible.
