C70 Drive / Suspension Work

20 January 2012 - 12:10 AM

Rear suspension is starting to make some clunky sounds and the mechanic who did my inspection told me the bushings were looking pretty bad... I figure its time soon to do some work on it.

Planning on just placing a massive order to fcp or somewhere for the parts- I am going to get the left/right trailing arm links- should I also replace the delta when i do this job? Any hangups I should be aware of when doing this- plan on doing it with just some jack stands and hand tools...

Mechanic also told me the front lower motor mount was looking bad too- I did just replace the upper mount so i wouldn't be surprised if the lower(s) was bad too- I didn't realize there was a "rear" one as well though... I see the rear is semi-hydraulic - is it worth replacing both lower mounts at the same time? The front one looks simple enough to hit from the wheel well - is the rear easy to replace/access as well?

Also looking to replace the front right CV as I am getting some vibration during straight line acceleration and at various speeds... its not consistent enough for me to think its a bend or a unbalanced wheel... any better diagnostic methods I could use?

I do know that when we put in the ipd springs the cv seemed to just "fall" out of the hub (wheel) ... it tooks us a lot of wiggling to get it to slot back in properly ... is that normal? Does the cv just sit pretty much- didn't really see anything securing it other than its location between the trans and wheel. (which i guess could be enough?)

Sorry for the rant of questions, thanks though- hoping to have this guy all fresh for Carlisle :)

Visteon Vnmc-1000

19 January 2012 - 02:05 PM

Anyone ever heard of or worked with one of these?
http://www.riverpark...C1000%20PID.pdf
I have read that this is the stock head unit from the newer *fancy* Lincoln LS --- not sure exactly what year though...

I bought one from a pawn shop in town, guy tested it with a car battery in the shop, showed me it was working... thing was fine.

Brought it home, wanted to tinker a bit with to see how the interface worked more etc... so I hooked it up to a 12v powersupply (one of those ac -> dc adapters)

I soon realized that wasn't going to work since the psu I was using was only 3amps :/ The buttons backlighting "flickered" on a couple times but I wasn't getting anywhere... I ended up just plugging it in to the car... Long story short I found out that the main plug/harnes for it was "hot glued" together...

I bought a new one through this guy in Michigan who is apparently re-branding the vnmc-1000 ... http://www.insonos.com/

Hooked the new one up last night... doesn't do a thing- tested the 12 volts all the way through the power plug/harness that goes directly into the unit... it was good- fuses all good even the one on the unit. Giving 12 volts to the 12+ and ignition lines... and a solid ground to the ground line...

It does nothing... doesn't even light up the buttons on the face.

I assume these units have some sort of internal power supply/adapter/inverter/flux capacitor - is it likely that could be replaced? Maybe an internal fuse?
Any suggestions would be appreciated... just worried I've waisted upwards of 300 on this thing...

Does look bad-ass , 5.1 surround, gps, the whole 9 yards really... i figured for 250 i couldn't go wrong :(

Steering "tightness"

13 December 2011 - 06:28 PM

Drove my bosses 450hp 08' M3 today.

Well then.

So whats the trick to having such response tight steering in my c70 as the m3 does? Maybe not exactly but i feel like the steering wheel is a floppy mess in comparison now...Is there any upgrade wiggle room in this department at all?

FYI I am already ipd lowered + 10mm / 20mm spacers

Keeping Center Speaker Dolby With Aftermarket Hu

05 December 2011 - 04:46 PM

The buttons and knobs on my stock hu in my c70 are looking (and acting) old... I figured it may be time for an update.

http://www.crutchfie...DIN#details-tab

Not looking to spend a grand, just something on the lower end... want it to be full touch screen though.

I think the dolby processor was separate of the stock HU is that true? If the preamps for a after market HU are just wired into it (and the stock amp as well) will they all work as they do now?

Just don't wanna loose that center speaker sound, its awesome :)

Also my center speaker grille fell apart... the volvo plastic just crumbles... i can't seem to be careful enough :( any solutions other than junkyard? Are there after market speaker covers?

Window Tint Laws (pa)

19 November 2011 - 12:57 AM

Just been diving into some research recently (some of you know I've been having trouble with inspection in PA..)

Although my windows are not tinted it has been considered as it would look nice with the nautic blue... I would be getting this done professionally... I figured id check it out on the pa dmv site, sure enough (and please let me know if I am reading this incorrectly) it looks like 30% tint is accetable on all 1998+ vehicles.

Found here (see: sun screening exemption program) - http://www.dmv.state...t_faq.shtml#Q08

http://www.dmv.state...orms/mv-402.pdf

I am bit confused as to how this works- looks like you can get the exemption by just filling out that form... does this let you go beyond the normal legal amount of tint? Or is the 70% around apply as a base and you need the exemption if you go beyond that...
