Quick fix, start from scratch, remove the top of the filter box and drop in a K&N. It will basically do nothing but at least you have added something correctly to your car. Just read the forums, there isn't a lot about S80 modifications, but you can gain a better idea of where to start. I hope this helps you young arob.
No turbo. And yea, I did take the top of the box off and put the filter right on the pipe.

Get rid of the bottom of the box for starters and keep the filter directly on the maf. dont know what the silver pipe is, i'll try to find out for you on my parents S80 tomorrow. You may lose an hp or two from doing this because you will suck in hot air, but nothing noticeable. Making a heat shield will get you back this power plus maybe 1 hp if you do it right and your filter is a good quality one, but again nothing you will notice. no heatshield will be the loudest though. It does not matter which way the cone is facing.
Well right now the bottom of the box is holding up the intake tube, so I would have to hard pipe it all the way from the engine. I'll probably end up doing that, but I wanted to find out what to do with the silver pipe before I take out the box. -

After careful consideration I have decided to remove the exhaust tip. When I put it on I didn't think about it too much, but it really does look ghetto.
As for the airfilter- I took out the top of the air box and put the filter directly on the intake pipe. Before taking out the bottom of the box, I wanted to ask what the silver pipe going to the box is. It goes from the back of the engine compartment all the way up to the front left corner of the air box. Another question I have is, how important is it for the filter to be facing forwards? Right now it's facing directly to the right. Thanks to those who are helping. -

Yea, that's what I've been thinking. There's just no road around here where I think I can safely go over 120. The road I used to max it at 120 was great, but not long enough, and the roads that are long enough aren't in good enough condition or there's too much traffic.

Whatever the record is, I'm confident I can beat it.

Why didn't you take out the stock airbox?
It functions a ton better than the stock system, that's for sure. Haven't had the time to take out the box yet. Hopefully I'll get that done today. -

Jippi GLT-R, on 16 August 2009 - 09:07 PM, said:first off, the cone part of the filter is pointed toward the motor where all the heat is and performance 101 tells us that hot air being sucked into the intake will more then likely decrease performance and power. second off you need a heat shield and you need to remove the stock housing and put the filter after the maf. i know how impulse buys are, we've all probably done it ( thats why i have so many parts i dont want lying around..
) but you need to think and install it somewhat right to play it off..
Alright, thanks for the advice. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
And as a general reply to everyone else- You have to understand that I don't know/care very much about your taboos and traditions, so just saying OMG LOLOLOL doesn't help anything. I also saw this when another member posted up pics. He had a spoiler on his car and the first responses were just flaming. If you don't like it then say why you don't like it instead of harassing. So what if I didn't set up the air filter exactly right? Atleast I took the old one out and have been getting ideas on how to improve how it's set up. So what if I put an exhaust tip on? It's not the end of the world, it's just a little poking exhaust tip, who cares? I respect you guys, but I think your zealotry sometimes gets in the way of constructive discussion.
