Steering Rack Question

27 January 2012 - 05:04 PM

I just recently installed a rebuilt steering rack into my 94 850. My parents offered to buy it for me, and obviously I'm not going to say no, and I asked that they not buy the cheapest one they could find. Well, I think they did and it came with inner tie rods already installed. Well, hearing some popping, noticed the outer tie rod boots are torn so I figured I would replace both inners and outers. Bought new inner tie rods and the thread size (diameter) on this steering rack is probably close to an 1/8" larger than OE tie rod threaded section (diameter).

Does anyone know if other steering racks came with larger diameter inner tie rods on different models? The tie rods were the right ones so it's not those. I have no idea how I'm going to replace the inner tie rods, I have no idea what I need to buy.

Thanks for any thoughts. If you have questions, let me know.

Volvo 850 Mas Air Flow Sensor

25 January 2012 - 05:00 PM

I'm looking for a MAF. Preferably one with low miles and in 100% known working condition. I want to see if I can find a solid used one before I buy a new one. Let me know what you have. Thanks.

Wondering if anyone has a known working condition IAC for an 850. If you do. I need it ASAP. So looking for someone relatively close in the MW. Let me know. Also looking for a known working CPS.

Mutliple Issues: Instant Op Temp, Won't Stay Running At Start-Up, Etc.

23 December 2011 - 10:29 PM

Alright, so this all started this morning. At home, parked outside, it was really cold last night and I had to move the car this morning. Started it up and it wouldn't want to stay running. I would start it, RPMs go to about 1500 and drop back down to 900 and then the car would sputter for a bit and then die. I had to feather the accelerator pedal for a while to keep it running. Finally stayed running, took it for a drive and it appeared to be completely OK. However, it got up to operating temperature extremely quick. Sitting outside all night and it was up to op temp in maybe 3 minutes of idling.

Fast-forward to three hours later. Try to start it again, same thing. Once it started idling it would die, eventually able to drive it and everything appeared fine. Same as before, up to operating temp in maybe 30 seconds...according to the gauge.

About 5 hours later we try again. This time, it was sitting in the garage all afternoon so it was warm. Same thing. It would turn on, RPMs drop back down and it would die. This time, sitting inside we could define a couple things. One, operating temp again increased rapidly, after sitting for about 5 hours the gauge said it was at operating temp in maybe 5 seconds, engine was barely warm to the touch. Two, the throttle was extremely laggy. You would press the accelerator pedal and it would not rev up, very very laggy. Three, we were getting very strange boost/vac characteristics reving it. It was going INTO vac was the RPMs rose. See video:

Also, the IAC would run for a minute or two after the car shut off with the keys out. Don't know if that means anything, don't know if it's done that before. Could a bad IAC not cause the car to idle? Why would the gauge say it's at operating temp when it clearly isn't?

Any input or additional information/questions, please ask. This all started today.

Won't Stay Running: Below Freezing Start

23 December 2011 - 05:43 PM

Home for the holidays now and my car is parked outside, the first time it's been parked outside in below freezing temps in probably 3-4 years, otherwise it is garage parked and typically when I come home I steal one of the garage stalls. Well, this morning I had to move the car for my Mom and it would not stay running. It would start and then die once the rpms settled back down. I would have to pump the gas to keep the car running and then once it was at operating temp, it idled and drove completely normal.

Weird symptoms:

-When tapping gas pedal to keep the car running, doesn't feel like it's responding the same as it does when warm, pumping the gas pedal wasn't instantly reving the engine, sometimes it would, sometimes it felt like it wouldn't or be extremely laggy
-I felt like the car got up to operating temps way faster than it normally does. The car sat outside last night, it was cold, in maybe the three minutes I had started it and slowly pumped the gas pedal to keep it running, it was at operating temp. It might be my imagination, but it felt like it was way faster than it normally would take.
-It has never ever done this before until today. I went back outside a few hours later because I had to move it again, and it was the same thing, would not stay running until it got back to operating temp and then it was completely fine.

Factors:
-I am venting completely to atmosphere, I am not running a PTC of any kind. I've heard that that can be a problem with freezing? Is condensation freezing in the turbo not allowing it to spin right away and thus not letting air into the engine?
-I think my battery is on the way out, after the car sat for 2 weeks without running the battery was completely dead, it also lost .5 Volts over night two nights ago, however, the car started right up each time it died this morning, so I do not believe this is battery related.

Specs:

1994 850 Turbo
FMIC
19T
Venting to atmosphere-NO PTC

I have the car in the garage right now out of the cold. I will start it in a few hours to see if it starts normally. If it does, I know it's temperature related.

What would cause a car to not want to stay running in cold temp start ups?

Thanks for all of your help.
