I would check the seams and the 2 hose attachment points (inlet and outlet) for leakage (check for residue), then if it is not leaking just let it ride. Most common failure spot is the plastic sleeve around the hose tubes.

I also wouldn't buy this part from FCP, radiator should be Volvo branded and you can get it pretty cheap from DW Volvo ($220).

There are a few drops coming down from both sides of the underside cowl, so that is what makes me think this thing is on its way out the door real quick. I can get a Volvo radiator from my local dealer for $260, so perhaps that will be the answer.

How about the hoses from FCP? Any experience with those??

Thanks everyone!! I really do appreciate your comments and feedback. I have not posted for a lonnnnnng time, and feel bad about jumping in for advice, given that I have not been around to provide any opinions. :(

I was under the, perhaps mis-informed, impression that Behr is the OEM manufacturer for the heater core and the radiator for my car? Can you explain what you refer to by "plastic sleeves around the hose tubes"? Is this a reinforcement point where the hose tubes connect to the tanks?

Replace the radiator. My 850 developed a small crack in the passenger side resevoir about 1/2 way down. When I drove over 70mph, the coolant pressure light would come on, and steam would start coming out from under the hood. As long as I wasn't on the highway and since I don't experience any stop and go city driving, the coolant level would just slowly inch down, but it would always evaporate by the time I was home.

I replaced the radiator and have gone another 40k miles since. Also, look at it this way, your getting a coolant flush as well :) The rad replacement is pretty quick and easy. The hardest part I had was that the plastic tabs on the bottom of the aftermarket radiator didn't line up with the slots in the sheet metal below, so I drilled into the tabs and but some large zip ties in. I used FCP Groton's Behr Radiator.

Since then I've added a new p/s pump, new rack, steering column u-joint, axles, rear shocks and mounts. Next on the list is a new heater blower motor (2nd one I've done on this car), new evap and heater core, pcv overhaul. I should be good until well past 300k...

So the Behr unit is not quite a perfect fit? Anyone have any experience with the Nissens radiator that FCP sells? I notice that both the Behr and Nissens have "lifetime" warranties, and am thinkint about going with the Nissens. Anyone have any experience with the fit of the Nissens?

Tell him you were looking for a turbo and IF he makes the price right, you'll just add a turbo to his. Then drive off with your "modded" NA laugh.gif

I did an DMV check on the vehicle, and it was in an accident last December, not to mention Edmunds and KBB both peg the value at about $3300. Given that the guy has NO idea of the history, and obviously does not know Volvos, I guess he honestly thinks that $4500 is the right price. He said, "this care is above average". Yeah, above average mileage for the year, and price... cool.gif

Cripes, I just found another one (at Goodwin's Volvo, no less), that is the same year, has 157k miles on it (my current one is not far from that), and they are only asking $1500. I did a vehicle check on it, and it did very well, however it appears as though there may be lein on it, which could very well be a mechanics lean.

With that said, is is common for repair facilities to sell vehicles for what the repair costs? I mean, obviously a mechanics lein is due to someone not being able to afford a repair. Anyhow, with any luck Goodwin's will have some good news for me..
