  1. In Topic: To Breath Or Not To Breath... Intakes The Question!

Boy I really feel sorry for this dead horse.

i rarely post, and due to that, this could very well be another spark plug conundrum... i've done almost every bolt on in the book to my T5-R. one would think an air intake is atop any self-tuners list. I've always read mixed things about them though, so i'd like to set the record straight so this can be a dead topic for future VS'ers. ARE intakes worth it? the pinned 'bible' we all referenced as newbies claims volvo's intake design is fine and a simple K&N replacement is good enough. other ppl say 'intakes provide more surface area... yada yada yada' then we all know an intake is 'open' whilst the stock setup is 'sealed'. how could something open possibly NOT suck in hot engine air? so what IS the deal?? anyone have cold hard proof thier EST or iPd intake made a difference other than a 'cooler sucking sound' or is it just a gimmick? gas mileage gains? how often are you cleaning this open element-type filter? anybody notice a difference in midrange since opening things up is less constrictive? thoughts, feelings, PROOF - let's hear it :o)

If the guy wants an in-cabin MBC, then get the Hallman Evolution RX kit. AND, the vacuum lines ARE NOT run into the cabin, only the control cable (72 inches long) that controls the MBC is lengthened into the car. It seems everyone was thinking the vacuum lines are run into the cabin, they are not, the vacuum lines (3 feet of hose) are still mounted as short as possible in the engine bay, and the control cable is run into the cabin controller.

Well so far so good for me and the Eboost2 (I love it and does what I wanted in a boost controller)(and especially for the money I spent on it and the install). The dyno shop that installed it is a TurboSmart dealer and they use it on their drag WRX STI so they should be able to optimze the tune of it. Will be interesting to see next year when I get the 18T.

I tried the eboost2 and was very disappointed.

It didnt like something about the external wastegate or something. I am using lower shores MBC and can break the tires loose in 3rd at 60-70mph on dry pavement, but then again a 50 trim pushing 20psi is moving a little more air than a tdo4

That is an option (and documented in the instruction manual), its just the more dangerous option, evidently serious electrical system damage could occur if there's a mishap in this hookup method, but its an option.

On another note, the dyno shop in order to get the RPMs to match the factory tach set the number of cylinders to 4, not 5. Have to ask the dyno shop why that is, or perhaps have my Volvo mechanic check the install. However, the EBC seems to be working correctly and the shift light fuction is working correctly, so maybe its not a big deal to have 4 cylinders selected instead of 5.

I still can't believe what a difference in boost this had made!! (I even think the paint on the front end is starting to blister off from the acceleration) (LOL!!!) Looking forward to going back to the dyno in 2 weeks to see the HP rating now and further tune the EBC to 17psi now with the new colder NGK plugs.

Why couldn't they use the coil negative terminal for an RPM signal, Ive used it for my MSD rpm switch and for an RPM input for my Civinco ECU

Yea, that's where the peak HP is being made.
