howardc64
2001 V70 T5.Replacing the power steering pump. Got a rebuilt that didn't come with the pulley. How does one take off the old pulley and install it on the new one?
vegasjetskier
The Haynes book says you need special tools and should take it to a dealer or Volvo shop to have the pulley moved over.
Black Betty
hold on you can go to auto zone or where ever you bought it they should have a loaner tool that will pull the pulley off, then you'll notice your rebuilt unit came with a bolt that bolt fits in the shaft and if you tighten it down it will push the pulley back on the rebuilt unitgood luck its tricky might need an extra set of hands but its do able no sense paying the dealer for that if you are replacing the pump yourself anyways
howardc64
Thanks.I'll look for a pulley puller and indeed the rebuilt came with a screw+washer+nut combination that presses it in place. I'll report back any additional complexities. Thanks again.

Basically, your need one hand on the pump, another hand crank the nut that pull the pulley out or pushing it back in for installation. The other person has to hold the center shaft so it doesn't turn. My rebuilt directions also suggested using a bench vice to hold the center shaft so it doesn't move.Your standard pulley pulling/installation tool is insufficient for this job. I used a nice KD kit borrowed from Napa Auto and it seems to have all your standard components. But this Volvo pulley is just different enough to make the job impossible using this kit alone.Basically, the puller's center threaded shaft is too big and can't reach against the PS pump shaft to anchor. If you look at the second picture below, you can see the puller itself will and the puller's center shaft will just lock up against each other on the pulley. I didn't realize this at first and the center shaft started cutting threads on the pulley itself. So the solution? I found myself a cheap (in case it gets ruined) 10mm socket and inserted into the hole in the center of the pulley. Now the puller's center shaft will anchor against the socket which anchors against the PS pump shaft and finally provide the necessary footing for the pulley puller. As I got the pulley about 2/3 or 3/4 way out, the 10mm socket isn't long enough and the puller's center shaft cut into the pulley hole again. I found a long 10mm socket to finish the job.Pic1 = KD pulley removal/installation kitPic2 = Puller center shaft too big for the hole. Hard to see but trust me Pic3 = 10mm socket inserted in the pulley center hole to provide proper anchor or footing against the PS pump shaft.Maybe there is a better solution I didn't know about. But this is what I did to get this darn thing off.
