Chronic Broken Spring Seats

Does anyone have pics of the old ones vs the new ones? The broken ones I had look different than the new ones I put in. I replaced mine from FCP Groton a few months back and no problems yet. They each had a sticker on them that said Volvo 850-which is older than the 70 series, but maybe it is just a generic label on there...

Have you telephoned fcpgroton? I'd do that and ask about the spring seats. It is entirely possible that they got a bad production run from their supplier. If you put the spring into the seat in the correct position, as you said you did, there should be no problem. Call fcpgroton and let us know what they tell you.

just checked my scantech ones, and they have started to develop cracks in the center. only been on the car since last summer. so looks like im gonna have to fit some volvo ones now.

This is exactly what's happening to me. The cracks start around the centre metal tube the strut shaft goes into and the cross nut bolts to. My cracks develop into tears.

yay for the search button...

i'm having a similar issue, here's my setup: titans w/215/45/17, bilstein hd, b&g springs (~1.6 drop), ipd bars, slater's links, omp bar. all installed ~1 year ago, except the omp which was about a couple months ago.

about a month ago i had some clunking; it was the driver side spring seat bushing (completely destroyed)

replaced the spring seat, bump stop, fitting, washer, cap, and screws on both sides. today after i check my oil level, i look at the spring seat bushing and see both sides are now wearing away, and probably will be clunking by next week. i got the parts from fcp and see the brand spring seat is sachs/febi. with this talk of 'newer' spring seats, what brand are they? do i just go to the volvo parts counter and ask for them, and they will be what i want?

seems odd that the bushings are wearing so quickly now, and the last thing i did was add that omp bar, so does anyone know about a strut bar being able to screw up those bushings? what other parts should i look at that may be causing the spring seats to wear out? :(

edit: i also changed wheel hubs, i was getting that groan sound (now it's gone). maybe i need ball joints? control arm bushings? slater!!!!!!!!!!!11 i want em!!!!11 i dunno :sheep:

This problem is posted all over this board, do a little search if you want to read reams of info. We get different people contribute each time, which can be useful but means lots of threads to sift through. Like, I pay close attention to this topic, but I've never read that the OEM were supposed to be reinforced to deal with this issue. That's good to know.

The fcp spring seats may be crap, I dunno, but I want to reply to the poster's original question, about the 11.81 inches. by the way, that is exactly 30 cm, a little easier to remember.

The 11.81 inches determines how long your springs are when the cross nut is tightened down and I think it probably matters for life of spring seats. It determines how stiff your ride will be: springs control vertical movement of the body, shocks/struts dampen the movement when returning to the resting spring height. if you crank down to 11 inches then your (stock) springs are always, over-compressed and that would mean more jarring that wil translate to the spring seat. If you only crank to 12.5 inches then the spring is undercompressed and this one I'm not sure about, maybe this would be OK because the weight of the car compresses the spring to where it should be. Or maybe not.

I did a complete strut job, didn't measure, seats went bad after 30k. So then I replaced just the spring seats (crappy fcp ones again) and paid close attention to the 11.81 cm. That was last fall, so far so good but we'll see if it makes a difference. If they crap out I'm definitely buying OEM.

If you have lowering springs, Bilstein HD (notorious for wasting spring seats on this board) and/or other mods, then the "right" length to preserve the spring seats might be different.

well sad. I changed my seat spring last week, and it is soo nice right now, no more that awful clunking sound, visually I didn't see any problems of FCP(bogi) seat spring, it feets perfectly and so far it works great to me, but week is nothing, hard to make a final decision about that product
