Zappo
Is it possible to unscrew the shifter top and replace it with a different one? (Car is a canadian 850T5M) The answer is no, it does not unscrew. Annoying, but true.

bill d cat
Is it possible to unscrew the shifter top and replace it with a different one? (Car is a canadian 850T5M)The knob is a press-fit on the shaft. It is NOT screwed on. There are reports of a "special Volvo tool" that slips under the knob, from under the boot to release the splines. There are also reports that if you straddle the console and pull on the knob hard enough you will get the knob off and hit yourself in the teeth with the knob when it gives. If you are really lucky you will break the white plastic ring that holds the shifter ball down before you get the knob off. If you search this topic here, you will come up with pictures of people actually sawing the plastic knob off. That thing is on tight. What were they thinking when they designed this???? I have a cracked shift boot, and I have collected a new shift knob, shift boot and plastic ring which are all in the back of my car waiting for me to have a lot of time to kill on this project. It has been at least a year now, and I still haven't gotten around to it.
Andru365
Wow, sounds like a huge PITA. I guess I can live with the original shifter. Thanks for all the help guys.I wasn't pissed, just don't love the hating on canada...you're only jealous of our manual 850 turbos ;)
azinwa
You need a section of thin wall metal tubing slightly larger than the shifter shaft. It needs to be about three inches long.Saw it in half length wise.Detatch the center console so you can reach up underneath and release the shifter boot.Once the boot is detached from the console lift the boot up inside out over the knob.Put the two pieces of tubing around the shaft then slide them up to release the retainer on the boot.Once the boot is free slide it down and do the same process with the tubing to release the knob.ORCut the knob off

dmelviØØ7
I have had to replace them many times and work at a volvo dealership. If there is a special tool, I wish someone would tell me. I have always been able to pull them, but be sure to not put your face above your fists. I also recommend a dead blow hammer for getting the new one on if you don't want a nice bruise on your hand. AnthonyR
Here's how I took mine off. lol. Pretty much what I did to mine to get the boot off Get an EST short shifter and put it in. then you have the universal screw type option. :D

the underlørd
So here's a couple of guys saying it'll pull right off. Does it then require a new clip?We talked about trying to drill the OE knob out, after we cut it off, but honestly, with the EST shifter (results may vary), i like the threaded knob idea much better. MANY more cool options.

Maybe some of the knobs are looser than others, but mine is on tight!(Thanks for reminding me about this project, I'll try to find some thin-wall tubing the correct size at the local hobby shop!)
