asingerucd
I tried searching, didn't find anything telling me what fluid to run in an M56H. I am hoping to find something that I can buy off the shelf- i.e. not a Volvo fluid. Does anyone have experience with a non-OEM gear oil in their manual? Thanks
Chopper
You should be able to use synthetic 5W-30 motor oil, I know some guys here use Mobil1 5W-30, and I'm pretty sure Rich has recommended it before.
maiku
mobil1 5W-30i noticed shifting was a lot smoother after i changed it
asingerucd
Really? I thought there was a thread in here saying that the synthetic oil would interfere with synchro engagement - that they needed some amount of friction to contact most efficiently. But if you noticed an improvement, I am game for it!Thanks!
maiku
why do you question us?
Geevs
He's got a point Mike. Manual tranny oil has this "coefficient of friction" thing which is supposed to enhance the synchros. Engine oil doesn't have this.
Chopper
Heck, I've put Mobil 1 ATF and Redline D4 "ATF" in my E46, all was an improvement from the stock factory "lifetime" fluid. I doubt Mobil1 will hurt the syncros.

AGBullit235
I tried to find this out, and even NAPA had the volvo p/n listed in there spreadsheet. Call me careful, but I always got the oil from the dealer.

Gioseppe
you could use a redline synth fluid.... as long as it meets hte standards of the volvo fluid it's chill.

Redline MTL (70-80W) is the recommended grade for the M56H according to Redline UK when I emailed them. Before running MTL, I used synthetic motor oil in my tranny but flushed it out and replaced with MTL. MTL is a lot better during cold starts. Been running on it for almost a year and no problems.
