Transmission Gone?

Transmission on the R has been acting up lately and i couldnt figure out what it was. Car would make a slight cluncking noise when idling but would go away when i'd press the clutch down. a different noise would start when the car went over 40km/h, basicaly after 1st gear.

After doing research, i read that this could be a bad throwout bearing and possibly clutch and pressure plate.

Reason i ask is because i took the car to a local transmission shop and the guy told me i need a new tranny and it would cost 1700$ for everything. I then asked him if he would replace it with a m56 or m59 and he didnt know what i was talking about even after i explained it to him soooooo at this point, i dont trust him that much.

I just dont want to lose the m59 thats already in the car. Does anybody have any experience with this kind of problem? i dont think the tranny is gone since i drove it 10km or so to get to the shop without any problem.

Any input would be great. Thanks!

I would start by changing the gearbox oil and drain the old oil into a clean, clear, container. Look for chunks of metal in the oil that you just drained. A lot of metal would indicate an actual transmision problem.

Normaly the throwout bearing makes a lot of noise when the clutch is depressed rather than when it is out. It could be that a finger broke off of the pressure plate and it is rattling around inside the bell housing.

Clearly, if you do need to replace the transmission or even just the pressure plate, you should replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, and throwout bearing - all of them - while it is apart.

Best of luck,

the throw out bearing can make noise when not engaged,I would take it for a second opinion at a volvo specialist, any way $1700 for a clutch and tranny sounds to cheap he may be trying to scam you ,you know get it apart and say it needs more.

its 1700 for a new tranny.....new meaning its new to my car, so its actualy used.

im trying to get a volvo guy to look at it, but i have to wait for the mechanic to put the tranny back together and back on the car. i would much rather pay for a clutch, pressure plate and bearing then having to throw away the m59.

the mechanic told me most of the gears inside are broken and its gonna be cheaper to buy a whole unit. I might just go there while the tranny is out and take a look, maybe take a few pics to post here

Q#1: how hard is it to rebuild one of these....is it worth it?

Q#2: Are the gears inside the same as the ones in a m56? i was thinking to just get parts from a m56 and swapping them in. Not sure what i would do about differential gear tho....

Ouch :(

Yup,ya definately need a tranny.and that sucks. Trouble is that if you added up the cost of all the parts in the pictures it would cost a fortune to rebuild it. Good luck in finding a used one. Make sure ya look ar the gear lube for its condition

well i found a m56 tranny for a pretty good price, i just wanna know if its possible to swap all the broken gears. but i cant seem to get an answer to that question, probably since manual transmissions are rare and barley anyone does work on them

If it were me and I had a complete transmission in had I would simply swap it out one for one. There are a bunch of preload torque specs and gear lashes and other time intensive things that go into rebuilding the gearbox itself and hope that the one I got was good. I'm sorta amazed at the damage to yours. They are usually pretty tough. I have, however, let my kids drive mine with a M-56 so anything is possible :D .

ya i think its too much work, im gonna have to give up the m59 and downgrade :( . althought i really need my car back, weather is getting warmer and not having a car blows.

not sure about the whole "downgrading part" since it looks like the differential you posted is just a plain old open diff, exactly what's in an m56.

maybe i'm wrong, but it sure as hell doesn't look like any limited slip i've seen.
