Black 854 T5-M (Canada)

Hey folks,

I'd started a thread I think... but anyway... here's an update about my canadian 1995 854 T5-M (factory). About 78 000 Kms...
Got it two years and a half ago and put a lot of time and money on it to bring it back to life... because the first owner didn't...
It was supposed to be a m56h donor for the T5-R at first, but the car runs well... So it's now my DD... with low KMs !

-Ipd stg2 tune from DarthR (16psi?) (stock conical 15g and DP)
-Sachs front and koni yellows rear / ipd blue springs
-Snabb short shifter
-EST 2.5" catback
-AEM Uego wideband and Prosport boost gauge
-Replika 17" Pegs on Dunlop Direzza DZ101 (205/45R17)
-Forge Blowoff

We are very far from when I purchased the car !

Cedar Point Ice Show

If you happen by Cedar Point this summer, Check out the Ice show (who knew?) where my daughter is the lead female soloist.
She is also 1800 miles from home with a 13 year old Volvo. She knows how to change a coil pack and how to use the code reader I sent with her.
I should probably just buy an open ended round trip ticket for the eventual repair trip. Or, hire one of you smart (trustworthy.....) VSrs when the time comes.

Supporting Membership, Donation Goals, And Changes

Changing a few of the ways supporting membership is handled. All the levels will be the same, but now some of the higher levels will have loyalty discounts. This is a discount applied automatically if you have paid for other memberships a certain number of times. In an effort to test this, anyone with lifetime should see Gold as a 50 dollar upgrade. In addition there is now also the ability for the use of coupons. For example the first 6 people to use coupon code ironmonkey should get 10 dollars off any package. Meaning Gold could be 40 dollars with the coupon code. Have a lot planned for this in the future but right now just trying to confirm I got all the data imported correctly. You should see a link at the top of the page or go here:

Volvo 850 On Speedline Alessios

Copied and pasted from s|w.

I have been into Volvos my entire life, so naturally when I was searching for a new project I wanted to build an 850 or s70. After months of searching on craigslist I stumbled upon my latest project. The title of the ad read something like "97 Volvo 850, Mechanics Special". Awesome, just what I was looking for. I clicked the link and began reading the vague history of the car that the seller had to offer. The pictures were literally thumbnail size but I couldn't help but notice the factory R bumper, R suede steering wheel, wheels that were only offered on the t5, and last but certainly not least the mileage. Only 84k on a 97. On a whim I hopped in my car to go check it out. Upon arrival at the hole in the wall gas station I was greeted by your typical used car salesman. After speaking with him for a while I found out that the previous owner was an old woman who drove the car without coolant. It started and ran but it was very rough. The positive part about all this was that it had typical symptoms of a blown head gasket, not too bad. To make a long story short I ended up doing the head gasket, fully rebuilt and machined head, and N/A cams (Huge thanks to my buddy Adam who played a major role in helping me bang this out in a day). I spent a couple months refurbishing the wheels as well as calculating suspension and wheels specs to get it sitting right where I wanted it. Within the next couple of weeks I am gong to be picking up stiffer springs in the rear (already ruined my fenders) as well as coil overs for the fronts. Without further a due, my 1997 Volvo 850.
I will have interior pictures shortly. It began raining just as I was finishing up the shoot. Enjoy!

Also, I just want to thank those of you who played a major role in getting this thing on the road. Adam (adamdrives) took time out of his busy schedule to drive down to my house to help me bang out this head swap in one day. Ben (Bmac) also went out of his way to source me a head and have it sent out to the machine shop. After some mishaps at the machine shop, he tracked down another head and hooked me up with N/A cams. Thanks a ton guys, It wouldn't be where it is now without you!

This Is What Happens When.....

This is a first for me and everyone else in the shop, so I figured I'd share it with you guys. Vehicle was a 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE. Driver is a female college student(Texas Tech). The owner is her father, who happens to own a dealership in Midland, TX. Our shop is in the North Dallas area. So to sum up, It drove pretty much across Texas at highway speed like this. Scary stuff.

Notice anything missing?

Some shots of the caliper pistons.

Here you can see the difference in rotor thickness, where the pad backing ate so much of the rotor away, it was able to slip out of the caliper bracket, riding between the rotor and rotor shield.

Hey guys I'll be flying down on vacation with my wife and kid visiting the inlaws June 8th-16th and was wondering if anyone wants to GTG for lunch or dinner or a drinks while I'm there. I'll be in Melbourne the 8th-11th and Jupiter the 11th-16th. Corey is abandoning West Palm for the summer so I would have hung out with him... I also won't have my car so no Moroso Motorsports Park drag strip this time. I'll have to save that for this Christmas when we are back down again. In the past I've met up with folks in Jupiter and had lunch at the Crab House off A1A. Good food and view of the light house on the Inner Coastal.

Anyone available and got any suggestion?

Tuner4Life's 1998 Saffron C70 Progress Thread

Hi everyone. I have been posting over on volvoforums and am slowly discovering that the c70 section is about a ghost town, nobody replies to questions, nobody has an opinion, etc... I have been trolling around here and really like the way the forum is set up and organized. Seems to be lots of helpful and nice people around here. Can wait to get to know everyone.

Anyways, in this thread (Which I copied over from volvoforums and edited accordingly) I will document the progression of, what is actually my wife's, 1998 C70 Coupe. I will link to any useful threads I start or find useful during the progression as a resource later on.

So...

Well it looks like it's going to be a fairly substantial project car, so I am going to keep a record (with pics) of what gets done.

We originally purchased this car, a 1998 Volvo C70 HT Coupe, for my wife. She looked at tons of cars and kept coming down to the C70, but she had to have an orange one. Somehow we got lucky and one popped up just a few hours away the same day she sold her old car. It looked to be in pretty good condition, and just needed a PCV system and maybe a wheel bearing. I quickly fixed these issues and in the few months we have had the car, we have also had to fix a c/v axle (snapped under very minor torque), drivers side window motor quit, drivers seat quit (Just need to reattach some little spring that came loose, and the car developed a significant oil leak which I and a few other mechanics believe to be coming from in between the block and head, (mind you, the underside was bone dry when we picked it up.

Anyways, despite all these issues she still loves the car and so do I (and this coming from a saab/toyota fanboy). I will be pulling it off the road in the next month or so and doing the head gasket, all upper gaskets, timing belt, water pump/t-stat, and most likely pulling and resealing the oil pan.

This car was supposed to be a daily driver for my wife, but it i becoming a fairly extensive project, so I will be posting updates in this thread.

But first, pics of the car right after picking it up...

Alright, I fixed the oil leak. Turns out the hose from the block to the flame trap has a rip in it. I also replaced several vacuum hoses and repaired a bunch of minor boost leaks. Now it runs great! The only problem I an still having is alot of tapping noise from the valvetrain. I tried the ATF trick and it didnt make a difference. So I am assuming I will have to drop the oil pan and change the o-rings.

Ok, I got the oil pan job done. It was a pain, buit I feel confident enough to do it again if I had to.

I also found alot of other problems though....

The air pump is bad and I did some research and found that the cause is most likely a bad valve where the air blows into the exhaust. Anyways that whole system is bad. I was confused though because there were no idiot lights on in the dash. I pluged the obd2 scanner into the car and found a 02 sensor code (bank1 sensor1) and a rich condition code. I am assuming that they are probably caused by the bad air pump. Anyways, I figured that the cel was burnt out so I pulled out the cluster and discovered that the CEL, ABS, TRACS OFF, and SERVICE lights were all MISSING!?!?!?. Yup, somebody removed all the lights. I replaced the bulbs and now guess what, they are all on. From what I have read, the ABS/TRACS light is most likely caused by a bad ABS module.

I called IPD and asked if they could make a tune that ignores the SAS system so I could just block it off. But turns out it is a federal offence to delete a worthless emission system even if I live in an area that doesn't do emissions testing. So I am going to have to fix it correctly. Darn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My wife has been driving this car for the last couple of years. Finally over the winter we were able to park it and I could start making a list of what all I need/want to do to it.

Here's what the plans are:

-pass side cv axle
-pass side trans output seal leaking
-timing belt job/water pump (140k mi and no sign of it ever being done!!!!!! aaaahhh!!!!)
-abs control module (abs and tracs lights are both on.)
-redo entire front end (everything is loose)
-B&G springs
-steering u-joint (steering feels like it's binding)
-15mm rear wheel spacers
-alignment
-replace split vacuum elbows on intake tube
-air flow directional actuator in dash is starting to go bad
-fix several burnt out dash lights
-oil/coolant/trans fluid change
-install 1998 V70R ecu (yes, I win at the junkyard)
-repair drivers window regulator (I rigged it last summer so it kind of works, need to fix right)
-derattle sunroof
-new headlight wiper arms/blades
-new brakes?
-some sort of double din screen (stock radio doesn't work)
-new speakers all around
-and the list goes on, and on, and on... and on.........

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This car is pretty much top priority to get stuff done on this year.

The first project I am working on is the front suspension.

-new mounts
-new bearing plates
-new end links
-new steering column u-joint
-B&G springs
-MOOG camber adjustment bolts
-new bilstein struts were put on a couple years ago and still seem to be in good shape, so I am leaving those

Everything went pretty smoothly except for the column u-joint which was a huge PITA. The front of the car is back on the ground though and looks pretty good even after just dropping the jack (springs haven't settled) it looks quite a bit lower. I cant wait to get the back springs in as well.

In progress:

Rebuilt strut assemblies:

Sittin pretty and still needs to settle quite a bit:

While changing the column u-joint I discovered some significant vacuum leaks due to these cracked and split elbows. I will replace them before putting the intake back together. Also need to figure out why the intake tube is covered in oil.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the rear is done. The rear is surprisingly easy as long as you can get the car high enough to unload the springs after undoing the shocks. Kind of a weird design for the rear suspension, but it's pretty easy to work with. It definitely needs spacers in the rear now. I'm thinking 15mm. According to the manual the rear is only a couple mm narrower than the front, not sure if its the body shape or what, but it seems like a lot more than that.

What size spacers do you guys run on the rear? I'm not trying to hellaflush/poke/etc... just don't want it to look so sunk in.

Anyways, Pics:

Yes, the garage is a mess.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not too much to report at this time. I killed 2 birds with one stone last night. I replaced the pass side trans output seal and replaced the axle as well. The trans was leaking from that seal and the boots on the axle were ripped. So now no more leak and no more grease all over the wheel. yay!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally got my vacuum elbows in from fcp. Threw in a new battery and drove it for the first time in months. It desperately needs an alignment. The ABS/Tracs lights went out almost immediately so hopefully I wont have to get a new module for that yet. The cheap hacked together exhaust on the car is now hitting the rear spring, so I'll have to get an aftermarket turbo-back... darn.

Also, the A/C has a leak as it is very low on freon and it was full last summer.... The list never ends, but there is at least progress.

Went to EFI Logics mega meet today, crazy amount of cars, awesome people, awesome shop. They were doing dyno pulls so I jumped on to see what my car was making, or not making. Only thing I have really done performance wise has been the snabb style intake and fmic so I was aiming to be over 200 hahah

Hit 209 hp and 225 ft/lbs on a mustang dyno. not bad for 170k mile motor! Was 88* outside (over 90 in the dyno room), bit humid, probably could have squeezed a couple more horse power out if it was a bit cooler and drier.

ARD tune and exhaust are up on the agenda.

Volvo On The Cape

This will be the first of many pictures I upload of my s70. Don't judge my photography skills too harshly OK? My girlfriend and I went to cape cod for a few days on a mini vacation. I was taking some photos of the beach and ocean and then decided "hey this would be an awesome place to take a really good photo of my car." Unfortunately someone was parked next to me for awhile (why do people do that THE WHOLE LOT WAS OPEN!) so the photos were angled differently. Hope you guys like them!

Yes it is Euro fuel, but interesting none the less from a non- biased point of view. Myself I only use Shell 91 with the new engine vs the Sunoco 94 that I have always used in the past.

Volvo's From Across The Big Pond (S70R, 480 Etc)

Hi guys,

I'll do a short introduction about myself; My name is Auke, at this moment 23 years old. Living in The Netherlands and I a big fan of Volvo! I study economics and beside that I work in my spare hours for Volvo in marketing and sales.

The whole Volvo addiction began many many years ago and now I've got a big collection of Volvo's (1:1 and scale models), brochures/leaflets, showroom material, internal booklets etc etc...

What Volvo's do I have:
- MY87 Volvo 764 aut.
- MY94 Volvo 480 S-Line man.
- MY95 Volvo 480 GT-Line USA-Spec man.
- MY98 Volvo S70 T5 aut.
- MY98 Volvo S70 R aut.

The x70-series and 7xx-series are well known in The States, but I doubt anyone of you is familiar with the 4xx-series? In the late '70s Volvo began a new project what needed to be the car for the younger people, the Volvo 480 (like the C30 is nowadays). It had to compete with the Volkswagen Corrado and the Porsche 944. Volvo's largest market was and still is The States and in the first place the 480 was developed for the American people. When they started to produce the car the exchange rates changed so negative that it would be way expensive and that's one of the reasons Volvo didn't sold them in The United States.

They build the 480 in The Netherlands from 1985 till 1995 at the NedCar factory in Born (where they also build the P1 S- and V40's). Here are some pictures:

Beside these new parts there's a big list of little detail and technical parts that are added on to keep it in a mint shape.

I'll post updates and pictures in the future. If there are any questions, feel free to ask!

Good Day! (Intro)

Hello everyone!

I got purchased a 1996 Volvo 850 NA in black to use as a daily driver! I thought it would be a good idea to create an account on here to ask any questions I may have and to use for general Volvo chat.

I plan on maybe picking up a set of pegs or volans if i can find them for cheap! I just want something simple and something that will give the car a nice look! I also may do the throttle mod, airbox mod, etc. It is in great condition and if i get some time ill post up some pictures.

Over the summer i plan on buying a 96 850R so i can do some serious toying and modding!

Well i just wanted to introduce myself so hello everybody!

Night At Mclaren

Last night I was invited to a soiree at McLaren Canada. The invite was through friends of mine from the BMW Club of Canada -Trillium Chapter.

Heard a few speeches from the president and others from McLaren on the MP4- 12C and what to expect in the future. Had some food and drinks and basically just talked shop all night. The cost isnt as high as I would have thought even at Canadian prices. About 260K to get a nicely equipped MP4.

The car is much better in person that what I had seen on the net or paper other than the cheap looking badge on the steering wheel. I`d still take a 458 though! Funny enough the guy that sold me my T5 at Volvo 7 yrs ago now works at McLaren.. And hes still a snobby English wanker lol.

Heres a few Iphone shots. One vid. I forgot to add that this will end up being the baby McLaren in the future. Seems like a flagship is in the works. Sorta like the Gallardo - Aventador.

Hey all, I'm not too sure what Justin's plans are but I would still like a group of up to roll into Carlisle together Saturday. Would like to do it at a decently early time this year so that we do not all have to park on the end like always. Let me know who would want to roll in together. We can meet at the back of the Sonic again if that's a good spot for everybody. Say around 9:00/9:15 so we can get there right before 10 or around 10 depending on waiting for people.

Introduction And Car-1985 Volvo 245

Hi, I just joined and live up in Portland Oregon, or the land of Volvo's, and am obviously quite happy to have IPD right nearby. I'm young and just starting to drive, but my mom bought a new Subaru and gave me her 1985 Volvo 245 station wagon DL with 199,000 miles. I've grown up with this car and love it. It's a Canadian model so it has commando bumpers with rubber trim used on the 1982 and older cars. Manual everything, M46 tranny, manual windows and locks and all the good stuff, I figure less electronic gizmos to fail! It's paint code 200, the paint on the body could use a few touch ups but is in nice shape. Tailgate was replaced as the previous owner backed into some kind of post and smashed the old one, he had another repainted in the same color but that paint hasn't held up as well, one of the many things that could due to be fixed. One of the nice things about IPD being so close is lots of folks know about it including the previous owner. He did some upgrades that helped with performance-A VX camshaft from IPD, He also added IPD 25/25 sway bars, and billstein struts and shocks all around as well. He also added those GT style engine bay stiffening brackets and built a custom exhaust for the car that sounds nice and throaty, as well as a custom stereo system mounted in the back compartment where the 3rd row seat would have been. It has a nice set of virgo rims as well.

Some pictures
This is what we came up with. "Hot Shots!"

The project was constructed with scrap materials around the house for the most part.

48" x 36" sheet of plywood
White paint
80cm paper archry target
School logo's to hide target advertising
48" x 36" x 1/8" plexiglass
1" trim ripped from an old 2x4
Brass screws
Nerf Maverick Rev-6 shot guns

Kids are awarded tokens through out the evening to which they can purchase items from the awards table at the end of the event.

This primary school game will sure to be a hit with the kids!

0 Mod, Bolt Up Polyurethane Front Bumper Lip X70 Series (Pict Heavy)

Hey all,

No need to say, we have been looking for front bumper lip options for quite some time. On-top of that, something affordable. I did quite some R&D, and literally drove around to other friends and acquaintances cars to find a bumper that matched the same dimensions as the X70 series front bumpers. Finally found something a car that suited that; 06-07 WRX/STI.

Now, for the fun stuff. The S204 style front lip is made of polyurethane, so its flexible, and quite frankly *I* always thought it looked good on wrx/sti's. Last week, I finally bit the bullet and ordered the S Style (s204) lip from JNA Performance; a local Subaru performance shop that has a GREAT reputation, good prices, and well.. is local. Best part, you can find these lips for <100$ shipped through ebay, amazon, or pay a little more to help a small business like JNA auto (120$).

Got the lip, brought her home, and before taking my XC bumper off, I test fitted it to the stock S70 front bumper. To my amazement, it fit absolutely perfectly. *Below is a how too to install*

Unmounted it and now was the time to fit it too the XC bumper, and again, fit absolutely perfectly. I will let you all be the judge on looks, however I could not be even happier with the appearance. I painted it with plasti-dip, so it it has a textured and consistante matte black color. Below are pictures:

I will say for the above pictures; there was only 3 screws holding it on (yes i know right side appears to hang a bit), and it was not "centered" so it might look a bit out of place, however judging fromt the left side you can see the proper fitment.

Now, on the XC bumper and finished paint.

• To install: place the two ends and screw them down, in the placement you like. Next, you will notice it does stick a bit past the bumper (front of bumper), however it is flexible! You will notice there is a bit of a lip on the inside of the lip, this fits up perfectly behind the lip of the bumper:

• Push the spoiler back so the lip slides over the lip of the bumper, screw in place, then go through and screw it to the rest of the bumper. just like that, you have a splitter on your car!

Hope you all appreciate the R&D that went into this. If you want to buy one, i had great success with: http://www.jnaperformance.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=105

however yes, you can find them through ebay and amazon.

Take care,
Ian!
