Overcharged Ac System

Long story short, I had to replace the AC compressor bearings and then refill the system afterwards. Instead of taking it someplace to have it recharged I just did it myself. The only issue is that you can't do this in the winter time, the temp is to low for the compressor to kick on and stay on once it has been filled. Not knowing this I kept putting in freon!

Now I'm down in FL and found the system to be overcharged since the compressor was having a hard time. Once I took some out it started to function more normal. Nice ice cold AC.....

It work's but I still think it is overcharged and don't know how to get it to the correct amount if it's even possible. My current readings at 80 degrees is 35PSI low side and 250PSI high side.

Anyone have any info on how to get the correct amount of freon into the system? The reason I think it's overcharged is due to a little more strain on the system then normal since I get a idle drop once in a while and the AC compressor turns on and off at highway speed at 3K RPMs.

Fixing Stripped Cam Cover Bolt Holes - Replacement Bolt And Tap Questions

Hey guys so I have three cam cover bolts that will not torque down, the bolts are fine but the threads int he aluminum are gone.

The stock bolts are 7mm x 1.0, 35mm long. I am trying to step up to 8mm bolts as an easy repair without taking the cover back off.

I happen to have a 8x1.25 tap and new bolts at home right now but I am unsure if I can chase 1.0 threads with a 1.25 tap or if it needs to be 8mmx1.0 tap to maintain the same thread pitch.

The 8x1.25 seems a lot more common, hence why I have them at home, seems harder to find the 8x1.0 tap or bolts. So, can I retap with 8x1.25 or do I need to source the 8x1.0 tap and bolts?

Forgive me if the answer is obvious, I am in the midst of many projects and been overworked lately, just trying to make sure I don't do anything I'll regret later.

Thanks very much!

Replacement Engine Installed . Having Tapping

I had a replacement engine installed into my 1998 s70T5.

engine is performing well but there is a tap from the valves. the tap is loud and very annoying. you hear it inside the passenger compartment when driving.

the mechanic who put in the engine returned and blamed the oil pan o rings for the tap, and he dropped the pan, and replaced the o-rings with brand new ones from a dealer.

the problem did not go away.

the oil level is full. I tried some trans fluid in the oil and it did nothing.

car has gone like 1500 miles since the engine replacement, and only one thing has changed:

for the first 4-500 miles after engine replacement the oil light was not on.

after the first 500 miles the oil light began to flicker when the car stopped at a stoplight.
the second you hit the gas the flickering stopped and went off.

after like 300 miles of this, (800 miles total since engine replacement) the oil light began to glow steady when at at a stoplight.
it would go away the second you hit the gas.

more recently when leaving the stoplights I noticed the oil light (which still glows steady at stoplights) would not shut off till the rpm's hit around 1500.

it's never been this bad.

I'm wondering if the valve tap and the oil light issue are related.
also this oil light issue seems to be getting worse and scares me.

anybody know what the fix might be?

96 Engine Into A T5-R

To put into my 95 T5-R I have a 96 engine in the garage now, the engine is complete with everything (all accessories, turbo, harness, etc). Couple questions.

(1) ECU. The 95 had EGR, the 96 has no EGR and was no air pump. Can I just swap in the 96 ECU to get it running? I know I lose some hp I can get a tune later, but they should both be 4.3 correct?

(2) Downipe/turbo. Both engines have a 15g. Just saw this post:

-Matt01, on 21 February 2012 - 11:21 PM, said:

"The difference in turbine housings:
There are 3 turbine housing designs (with two variations having been seen internally in the angle-outlet housing, but we will ignore that for now!). Conical outlet flange (94-95 850 turbo, 95 850 T5-R), straight outlet flange (96-97 850 R, T5 and GLT, 98 model S70 R, T5, And GLT), and angled outlet flange (All cars 99+ excluding the newer cars with KKK turbos)."

So I know it should be obvious when i start the job but: do I need to use the turbo from the 95, put it on the 96 engine?

I don't know much about the condition of the turbo from the 95, would be good to know up front if I will need to use it.

Brickerator @ Carlisle 2012 (Requesting Your Assistance!)

OK folks... Last year, this was a hit (when is beer not a hit?), and I'm glad! This year, with the Brickerator not being a secret, I'd like to solicit some assistance in getting it ready. I've got most of what I need, but in the tradition of one-upping myself, I need to add on to it. At the very least, I'd like a 3rd pony keg (I ran out of beer early Saturday evening), and in addition to that, I plan to bring some of my own home-brewed beer.

The third pony keg would simply be there for when one of the other main kegs runs out, but the homebrew I would like to be tapped in addition to the other 2 live kegs. This puts me at THREE faucets, and already, my draft tower has run out of room. On top of that, I'm bouncing around the idea of having an auxiliary keg hookup* (i.e. an unused faucet, with a tap to reach outside of the car). Last year, there were some kegs other than my own, so, if instead of using a party-tap, you'd like to take advantage of my facilities, you'd have that option.

Beer
The trunk fit's one size/shape: the short and fat 7.75 gallon "Pony" keg... While that size (volume) is available for most beers, they're using a different shape keg now (tall and skinny = does not fit)... For the most part, the only beer that comes in that particular keg is Bud/Miller/Coors. Having one of those is perfectly OK -- I call it the filler beer. Last year, I had Dogfish Head 60min IPA; in order to do that, I had to buy a bud light keg in advance, drink it all, clean/sanitize the keg, and then do a keg-to-keg transfer (source being 1.5 Sixtels, only thing available).

-Arrogant Bastard: Stone Brewery in San Diego uses the right size keg! If someone is coming from that area, I'd like to enlist you in this madness. I want Stone, period.... So if that means I have to buy 15.5 gallons (only size available outside of SoCal, per Stone), I'll do that and put the rest in bottles.
-Dogfish Head IPA: At this point, I'm still planning to have DFH -- and a 75min if I can swing it (mix a 60 and a 90).
-Bud Light: to be picked up at Carlisle Beverage, accepting sponsors
-Homebrew: I plan to bring one or two of my own beers -- I'll need to purchase two 3gal Corny Kegs for this (although this is smaller than batchsize, the 5 gallon corny's are too tall).

I still need to make my inquiries about the Arrogant Bastard and Dogfish Head... Not too worried about the AB, but last year Dogfish Head was having some major distribution issues (which is why i couldn't get the full keg that I requested 6-8 weeks in advance, nor could I get 90min IPA). If it seems like it's going to be an issue again this year, I may need some help from the DE folks!

Supplies
-Cups: I'll cover for the most part; because I know what fits in the cup holder... They're Safeway brand, and I'll figure out the size if someone wants to bring an extra bag just in case (probably a good idea).
-Dry Ice: someone suggested this last year, and after I got home I looked it up... The price was pretty even with the total amount spent on regular ice, and it will be less to deal with. I really only found 1 place online, somewhere in MD, but if anyone local knows of a place or can hook some up another way, it would help...

Equipment
Draft Beer Tower: I was thinking i would create a box, but instead, i think I'll take a single-faucet 3" wide tower and mount it horizontally on top of my other one, with 3 or 4* faucets running across it (I have 2 right now). The tower alone can be had on eBay for $15 shipped, but i'd still need an additional faucet, shank and hose for each new tap (a "tower rebuild kit" that includes one each of those 3 items is about $45). That said -- I'll either need to learn to solder Stainless Steel (and buy the tools/mats), or I'll need someone to do it for me.
Keg Couplers: This is what mounts to the keg, I need 1 sanke* (for aux kegs) and one ball lock (for corny/homebrew kegs)
Gas Splitter: I have a 2-way gas splitter, I'll need a 3-way (either to use alone for 3 kegs, or in addition to the 2-way for 4 kegs*).
Tap Handles: I'd need an Arrogant Bastard tap handle, and I don't know if they're any cheaper @ the brewery, but they are available online. I'm also thinking about a nice chalk board tap handle for the homebrew. DFH and Bud Light are covered, but if anyone wants to hook up their own keg*, maybe look into grabbing a handle for it as well (of course I have the standard 3" black ones, just in case).
Counter Pressure Bottle-Filler: This would be for properly filling a bottle with keg beer (and not having it spoil). I'd consider making one, but they're not too expensive.
Insulation: Few items that could help with this; looking to wrap each line individually with foil tape and then wrap them all in foam. Also found some nifty keg jackets that I'll fill with the dry ice. Open to suggestions -- remember: warm lines = foamy beer.

Food
I'm not bringing food... I just want someone there to feed me

As you can imagine -- this little endeavor is not cheap. If anyone can provide any part of this (hand-me-downs or otherwise), please let me know... Things that need to be made (like the draft tower) I will need sooner than later. If anyone is having a keg party -- you should do it with a pony of bud light/etc, and then give me empty keg .

S80 T6 Transmission Questions Several Inquiries..

-=2000 S80 T6=-

Finally got the S80 Running smooth as glass. I have read all the problems people are having with the 4T65-E GM Transmission. I have several questions regarding preventive maintenance and upgrades to ensure reliability and driving style..

1. Do these ultimately fail despite WHAT you do them as far as changing the oil and filter say every 15K-20K miles? No flush just fluid and filter change...
2. Moderate driving...no dogging the car or abusive racing etc... Normal everyday operating...Do they still Fail?
3. I've read that these came in Many GM cars...Are they direct Bolt ons like If one is pulled from a Buick , Impala, Lumina etc... or are there vast differences in Bolt patterns and Torq converter size etc.?
4. Do they Fail as often in the GM cars as they do in the S80's?
5. Does it fail just as rapidly in the NON-Turbo S80's?
6. I think (Correct me if I'm wrong) The S80 comes with the 4T65-E. I have read that they've upgraded the Valve Bodies in Mid 2000------>Quoted [Starting in mid year 2000 models, all 4T65-E models received an upgraded valve body. Starting in 2003 the internal electronics were changed, hardened 4th gear shaft, ratcheting sprags for input and 3rd gear were added. The last application was the 2011 Chevrolet Impala as GM has transitioned to the 6T70 family transmissions for 2012]
Does this make the Transmission more reliable and is the Wiring / connectors the same??
7. I also read where they have also produced a 4T65E-HD.
Can this version be used in place of the 4T65-E?
8. What gives? General Meticulous Maintenance should be ok is my thinking....Do they Fail moreso in the Summer or the winter?
9. Will an External Auxiliary or ADD On Tranny Cooler help?

I paid Peanuts for this Car with a BHG...I have less than $500 Total in it and it runs like a Dream. (Not as fast as my 855 R but it is Comfortable as H3LL and Smooth as silk) I want to keep it around for awhile and would like to do all the preventive things that I read people having issues with. It has 161k on the clock, no CEL even when I put the head on and did the VVT timing setup per procedure... Its all to quiet in Barter town which scares me that something down the road is approaching... I've heard all the Trashing and Sarcasmistic posts regarding this model Volvo and I'm looking for some valid advice and not the typical "Get rid of it" kind of posts... In my daily operation I come across Hundreds of GM cars in scrap metal yard that probably have this same transmission. I can get one from $30-75 if I pull it. So having a few spares ready to go is no problem. I'd like to obtain one, have it upgraded and rebuilt so I'll be ready when "Tranny Death Day" comes.... Enlighten me please if you have some feasible ensight....

Thanks in advance

I should be receiving my ARD Green tune today (super excited), and I was wondering if I should install my AC Delco BCS or keep running the MBC?

Basically, I've driven the car for 2 years almost with my Hallman MBC, never had any problems (except for the massive amount of wheel spin I get in first and second gear). I'm currently running a RICA Stage 1 for a 19T, and gonna be throwing in the ARD Stage 2? 16T tune...should I let the computer decide what boost it should be running at what RPM (aka BCS) or do I keep my MBC?

Should I run them in parallel?

I know this topic has been raised a few times already, but I would like someone fill out this diagram for me as well lol, I really dont know how to connect this BCS. I have stylin vacuum hoses, so none are colored...where do 1,2,3 go?

2001 T5 M66 Gearbox Conversion

As title.

My M56 failed and I wanted a newer/lower mileage box so we found a 2005 2.4 T5 at a breakers. Tim Williams (posts on T5D5 most) did the swap and so far so good. We fitted a 2005 remote unit and cables as my cables were the wrong length. The 2001 M56 has a 23 spline input shaft so we reused the existing paddle clutch and SMF. Thankfully the depth from the edge of the bell housing to the tip of the slave is the same on both boxes. The Gripper diff needed modifying - we were going to add a 1.7mm spacer to the back of the ring that the crown wheel bolts to but in the end Gripper suggested milling that off the teeth (I think). The Phase 2 driveshafts are the same as the Phase 2.5 (facelifted) shafts.

No pics unfortunately. Thanks to Hussein for helping Tim during the swap. The next job is to find a way of using the solenoid that prevents accessing reverse - at the moment there is the possibility of selecting reverse at speed (unlikely but possible). The solenoid is not on a 12Volt feed so we are looking at a stock M66 car to find an answer.

Cruising is nice as 6th is higher than the M56H 5th. Through the gears is nippy as the ratios are all lower than their M56 equivalent and it's easy to stay in boost. Gearchange is very smooth but that may be due to using 75W80 Fuchs oil this time rather than Redline Heavyweight Shockproof in the last box. The diff is possibly slightly more audible with this oil as it contains no friction reducing additive but it locks up nicely.

Hey guys,

I have a 2000 v70 GLT and the radiator fan isn't coming on. Using the Torque app on my phone, my coolant will reach 100 degrees Celsius and the fan still wont turn on. My ECT(possibly aftermarket) has less than 10k, I replaced a bad fuse for the fan and fan relay. Fan still isn't working unless I turn on the A/C or by jumping/grounding the yellow wire or yellow/white wire from relay.

Searching around, I read a thread where someone mentioned unhooking the ECT and turning the car to POS II..and the fan should run full blast. Mine does not. Is this something to do with the 99+ tom foolery?

Anyone have any insight? What temp should the radiator fan come on??

Car Stalls After Few Seconds And Will Only Run Feathering Throttle

I myself have a 97 glt, but right now we have a customer's 98 s70 glt in the shop that we installed a used motor in last year...

Customer just had their car towed in because their husband said there was some kind of sludge on the dipstick and the car would not run.

Dipstick looks as if it may just have moisture on the stick from the tube and might be nothing more than that because ive noticed my 97 doing the same thing, then once the dipstick is wiped off, oil filled up/topped off and check the oil again, no more sludge/milk shake...

So this 98 had one code in it, p0243 for the boost control solenoid, but i find it hard to believe that it is causing the problem...also spec on the solenoid is 22.4-25.8 ohms and when i checked resistance it was 28.1 ohms so im assuming the solenoid is still good... Can the computer cut off fuel if something is wrong with the boost control solenoid?

The car will start right up, the idle jumps up then you see the idle motor try to level the idle off so after 5-10 seconds of starting it off it just cuts off. You can get it stay running if you keep playing with the throttle but you can tell its starving for fuel because its smells like eggs guessing its lean as hell, and stumbles and will cut off if you stab the throttle and kill the motor, definitely loosing or cutting fuel, not ignition or anything

The other strange thing is that with the key on, i guess its the air pump or something in the front driver side headlight/radiator area that is humming extrememly loud causing everything to vibrate from whatever electric motor is running, my guess its the air pump mounted down low. Also i can put my ear against the idle motor with the key on and the idle motor is running too adding to the noise and humming, and almost positive it was not doing any of this when it first came in and we started looking at it...

Should i look further into the boost control solenoid and the code that came out of it? Or would that have nothing to do with the running and fuel issue? I have a brand new snap-on diagnostic system at my disposal, but ofcourse it will only do 2000 and new volvo so it renders me almost helpless unless i can search and find something to go on, will be spending the rest of the afternoon researching now

Thanks guys

V70 Serpentine Accessory Belt Vibration

Hi

Curious if anyone's had issues with a serpentine belt vibration? This is on a 2003 V70 2.5T AWD. Belt was replaced at 80K miles. I now have 102K miles.

The vibration occurrs exactly (and only) at 1,400 RPM. I have witnessed it from the right wheel well and the vibration is in the long run of the belt from the crank shaft pulley up to the alternator.

Not sure if vibration has been there since replacement as my wife drives the car.

It's not horrible but, it drives me nuts. Any idea if this is simply a low quality belt issue or if I need to replace the belt tensioner as well.

Thanks
In March 2007 the dealer replaced the fluid and upgraded the software to correct the 2-3 flaring issue. That was at 47K miles. And this past weekend I used the IPD kit to replace 14 quarts of Mobil 3309. Currently at 102K miles.
Great meet in general, so many nice cars and people, i was in awe for most of the meet, and didnt take that many pictures, but here is what i snapped at the GTG this guy works for Novitec and has the most amazing brake setup ive ever seen One of three SLS's, one was matte green from the factory, i guess i forgot to take a pic The woodword/restore on this was amazing this car!!!! So i was stoked on just seeing these car, but then I got word that the group was heading to a historical auto museum for the rest of the day, really couldnt pass that up haha, how it was kind of pitched though was that it was going to be a bunch of model T's sitting around, but that was far from the case. Almost all the cars in the collection have been multiple Pebble beach and various other show winners, much of them im sure you have all seen on TV. All the cars were Bugattis, Delages, Delahayes, Hispano Suizas, Talbot-Lagos and Voisins, basically all French. heres their website. http://www.mullinaut....com/index.html Shitt thing was, mostly all of our pics came out blurry, (i suck at taking indoor car show pics), planning on going back if possible with a tripod! but heres what i got. this was up against a wall, not a lot of room to take pics, wish i had my 50mm on me OG windscreen!!! Awesome hood bling! I had to go to the bathroom after seeing this!! SO this was the cool story of the day, sorry for all the people looking at the description on their mobile haha one whole side of the car is for the most part together, it was preserved by laying on that side in the mud, the other side of the car was exposed to the water current, hence why its almost all gone, haha. All that was done to the car was drilling some holes for oil/water/fluids to escape and the original dive team put on some sort of lacquer to preserve it. i thought it was very cool I know colins got some pics, ill try to save my pic of the $35 MILLION DOLLAR BENTLY that they had, my pics of it are hella blurry though Well, thats all for now, hope somebody found some of this interesting lolol

LOL, i didnt take a pic of my car all day!
98 V70 Fuel Filling Issue

Hello there,
Hoping to get help with my fuel filling issue. At the station the pumps wont let me put gas in my car at all. The pump keeps shutting off like the tank is full but it is not near full at all. When I try to put gas in it with a regular red modile tank it backs up and I have to fill it slowly. I think the vent line is clogged but have no idea as how to fix it.

Hey all,

So, I've decided the next mod for my car is going to be a FMIC. I've read/seen a couple threads on people doing this, and it seems fairly straightforward. I was just curious if anyone could point me in the right direction as far as sourcing piping, couplers... All that good stuff. Also, any recommendations on which intercooler I should go with would be appreciated. I'm looking to be running at around 300hp, so I don't need anything too crazy. Thanks in advance!

Hey all. I've searched for answers but still have a few questions.
Tomorrow I'm installing a 15g. I own a 98 lpt, it has R ecu, exhaust, intake and stage 0.
Questions are:
I would like to run about 15psi, I realize that's close to the 15gs limit, but am I going to run into fuel cut before that? (I do have an R ecu)
Secondly, about how much more power can i expect from this swap? I read around 270-300 tops. But any idea on a stock R ecu?
Thanks everyone.

Right Side Cv Clunking

So I replaced my wheel bearing today it was nocking under load (steering left). The old wheel bearing was really rusty and rough... and when spun had some obvious flat bearings... so this was a good thing.

But now it seems there is a different nocking, coming from the CV happens on straight driving at about any speed, but worse when putting the right side under load.

The "hub" side joint we took apart becacuse it seemed come apart inside- like disjointed. I pulled the boot off and resseated the bearings (what mess lol) and we pushed the parts back on the splines, seems solid and smooth now.

But the inner (engine side) joint didn't feel as "connected" - do these slip apart as well (on the inside) - could that be causing the nocking?

I was told they shouldn't come apart easily and if they do they are bad- is that true? Should I just replace the whole axle?

Guessing its safe to drive, like this? Worst that could happen is the cv joints wearing or breaking more...

Thanks VS!

Bad Brake Master Cylinder?

Last month, I replaced a pair of front brake calipers on my friend's 1992 240 (w/ABS). After replacement, I bled the two calipers one at a time with a Motive pressure bleeder at about 20+ p.s.i. I noticed then that the brake pedal went down to the floor which it never did before. I also noticed that if you pump the brake pedal just once, the pedal feel is normal and the car stops the way it should and the travel feels normal. When you let go of the pedal and reapply two-seconds later - it's the same scenario, the pedal travels to the floor (the car always stops though every time - it's just a little unnerving). Pump it just once, and the pedal feels great. I ended up bleeding all four-calipers, even though I only opened the front calipers. I went through about three-liters of brake fluid. The pedal was still the same. I tapped lightly on the ABS unit to free up any bubbles while bleeding. No go. I finally assumed it was the master cylinder. I replaced it with a brand new ATE-brand cylinder from Eeuroparts.com. I bench bled it for about 15 minutes/about 70+ strokes. It progressively got harder to push and the bubbles stopped appearing in the reservoir. (The reservoir came attached to the cylinder too). I installed it on the car and the same thing happened, pedal to the floor, pump once, pedal OK. I bled the hell out of the system with both the pressure bleeder and the Vacula suction bleeder. Finally, at some point the pedal seemed to work, (although I didn't think it felt right) and all was well. Last week, we discovered that the cheap caliper I installed was defective in the way that it caused the pads to touch the disc while the car was being turned at very low speeds left or right - sort of a horrific moaning sound. I replaced the suspect caliper with a good remanufactured one. The sound is gone. The pedal now goes to the floor. I wish I never meddled/opened up the system. My only thought is that the master cylinder is bad. There's not much left to this braking system. The calipers and hoses don't leak, the reservoir is full. I don't get it. Tonight I bled the system again, all four-wheels, two-liters of fluid. I even used both the pressure bleeder at 20 p.s.i. AND at each caliper I attached the Vacula suction device (at the same time) and pulled the fluid through each caliper. I started at the passenger-rear caliper, the driver's back, passenger front, etc. I can't imagine a rogue air bubble trapped somewhere in the system still. What are the chances that it's the brake booster check valve or the brake servo check valve?????

Banjo Fitting On Fuel Rail

Hello everyone,

This car is a 1998 V70 AWD.

The fuel supply line is connected too tight to the banjo-ish fitting on the fuel rail. This isn't a picture of my car, but I've circled the part I'm talking about in red.

I've tried a couple of times to get them apart but I don't think I can do it without destroying that fitting on the rail.

I've considered taking it to a shop to see if someone with really good tools (snap-on, etc) will have any more luck.

I'm worried that if I ruin the fitting I won't be able to replace it.

Does anyone know how this thing is connected in to the fuel rail? Is it replaceable? Does anyone have the VADIS printout that shows this part?

It's the same same url but with a different design: www.chrisamosphotography.com

I used these guys to design the website, I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for a good photography website platform.

For now, chrisamosphotography.com is going to stay exclusively automotive photography, I bought another site through cmd a few weeks ago that will be my wedding/portrait/headshot webpage.
I'll try to get some photos of the new S80 up there soon.

Hope all is well with everybody,
Cheers,

How To Test Fuel Pressure Regulator

Hello all,

I just posted another topic about vacuum testing the CBV, but I also wanted to ask about testing the FPR.

I know the 'standard' test for an FPR is to remove the vacuum line and watch for fuel to come out. This can take some time (you should wait 5 min or so).

Anyway, I think this control (the FPR) should also be able to be tested with a hand operated vacuum pump.

There are actually two vac lines going to the FPR on my car (1998 V70 AWD):
- one goes up over the head and connects to the intake manifold
- one goes along the back of the block with the hard water line and connects to the intake hose just behind the MAF

I removed the line from the intake hose behind the MAF and put a bolt in it to plug it.

I then removed the line from intake manifold and connected my vacuum pump.

I was able to pump up some good vacuum, but it leaked away pretty quickly. I can't remember how much vacuum or how quickly, but I definitely felt like it should have performed better.

Does anyone know how you can test a FPR like this?
How much vacuum should I be able to pump up on this before it can't hold any more?
How long should it be able to hold the vacuum?

Thanks!

How To Test Cbv

Hi all,

I have been chasing poor fuel mileage for a while now and I finally did a test of the intake system (vac lines, gaskets, etc) by pressurizing the intake, and listening for leaks, listening through a hose to pinpoint the noises. This is the procedure outlined in VADIS, and it specifies to use something like 4psi. I used the canister purge valve's connection to the intake to introduce my air pressure.

Anyway I didn't really find any problems except I did find a leak coming from the compressor bypass valve. The air was coming out between the turbo housing and the CBV 'cap' piece. I suspect the diaphram inside is busted.

I've never read about anyone testing this using hand operated vacuum pump but I reasoned that this is just a vacuum actuated control and if I put a vacuum on the line it should actuate the control and also probably not leak the vacuum away, at least not very fast.

So I pulled the vac line that actuates the CBV off the intake manifold and tried to pump up the CBV using that line. I couldn't pump up a bit of vacuum. Like, not at all.

It's /possible/ that the line leaks (in between the manifold end and the CBV end) but there were no apparent leaks when I was doing the pressure test.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is a definitive test, but I wanted to check with the community.

- shouldn't the CBV be able to hold vacuum? At least normal engine vacuum of about 20 in Hg?
- shouldn't the CBV also be able to hold pressure?

So, the guy is delivering my car to my place of work and he gets 1/4 mile from his house. His brother was following him and said that it looked like it shot sparks (or flames) from the tail pipe and then it lost power and the check engine light came on. It was still running but then he shut it off. It now refuses to start. It will crank well and then it feels like its choking or getting hung up as it slows down, and then will crank normal speed.

Any ideas as to what's going on here?
Did my turbo take a dump, timing belt? Maf?

Well it's time for my annual move again, I'm getting pretty good at this! If anyone is available to lend a hand on Saturday February 25th I'd be greatly obliged. I'll have a fridge full of beer at the new place as well as pulled pork sliders and can order some pizza if desired. There will also a number of Volvo parts being moved that might need new homes. Thanks!

EDIT:

Details. I'm picking up the U-haul truck at 9am and heading over to my storage unit to empty it out. Planning on being at the old place at 10:30 to start unloading the old apartment. Those of you planning on helping if you could arrive around that time it would be greatly appreciated.

Right now I've got commitments from:

Andrew
Tony
Carson
George

If you feel like you can make it please feel free to add your name to that list. Thanks!

Quest For An 855R *picture Heavy*

After Carlisle 2011, which my 418 855 Turbo did not attend due to massive oil leakage. I met two of the members on VS in person who had helped me with parts and stuff when I got my Volvo back in July of 2010. Brandon and Tom two members from the ECC told me about an 855R they had picked up a few weeks prior to Carlisle as I had exchanged Pm’s with Brandon about flying down to pick it up. A few weeks went by after talking and they had to sell the R with was okay (needed valve stem seals). Was a little bummed, but then I got a pm about a month later from Brandon saying that he had picked up another 855R at a local auction that was meticulously maintained and the only issue was some clearcoat on the hood and roof. I immediately got together some money I had stashed away for a rainy day, this happened to be that day (sorry shitty metaphor). I talked it over with my Dad as I would be using some of his millions of accumulated flying miles from his job as VP of sales for a foreign company. I ended up paying a $50 dollar convenience fee because I bought the ticket 3 days before I was going to be flying out to MA! Not bad for a regularly priced $200 ticket. Brandon had to be back at school so that was where the time constraint came into play. So the day came for me to get going to the airport, took a limo because I’m hood, not really, yet again my Dad had free miles with them
Arrived at the airport at 4:30am with a suitcase full of suspension parts (literally everything) and a backpack with a few sets of clothes and the necessities (ipod, camera, phone, toothbrush).

I ran through the gates and went to check my bag in. Unfortunately it weighed way over 100 lbs…. oops. So I had to use mad weight reduction measures by shoving everything in my bag that I could to get some weight out of the bag so I wouldn’t be charged $200 for just the bag  Weight reduction success! And I was able to board without paying out the ass in bag fees. I imagine I was pretty funny to see in the middle of the airport at 4:00am rearranging struts, springs, shocks, and other things trying to get some weight out of the suitcase
So successfully landed at Bradley airport in Conneticuit. So jumped in and drove it back to Brandon’s garage where the Volvo parting madness takes place that everyone on VS knows
Mentioned that I had the suspension in a suitcase that I brought there… so we got right to it and started tearing apart the car after not even owning it for a half hour!
Didn’t get a picture of Dillon but he was there too!
Got the rear suspension on and buttoned up. The front was an issue, I ordered all parts separately from FCP because I had bought the struts from a member on VS so I didn’t need the whole kit, I forgot/didn’t know that I needed the two cross bolts for the top of the strut… DOH! Well I faced it that the front wasn’t getting done and started packing up the car and was ready to leave around 4:00. Flew in at 9:00, short visit but very productive!
The time had come to leave and I bid my adieu to Brandon and Dillon and my Dad (who had flown in form Detroit after a business trip decided to head out, wasn’t about to tackle a 15 hour road trip by myself on 3 hours of sleep, that’s just asking for problems).
Here are some pics from the ride back!
This was a great journey and I got to get reacquainted with friends I met at Carlisle and was overall such a worthwhile thing to do and now I have an R! This will serve as my pseudo “build thread” just a thread to chronicle what is happening and what I’ve been doing to the wagon. This thread should have been out in August but I got too busy with school and life, but it is here now. Hopefully it makes sense and I hope everyone who reads enjoys it!

Things That Happen In Dan's Garage

A significant percentage of the whiteblock-related performance things that happen in the greater Dayton area occur in my garage, and it seemed logical to chronicle these things here for all to see. Regulars here include John (jnderr), Lucas (korruption), Stu (scandalo), Val (FINN), and some redblock and non-Volvo guys. To bring youse guyse up to date, here are a few of the things that went down:

Dec.- Lucas' 98 V70R got an M66 and dual-VVT 2.5 swap:

Stu and Lucas on their third or fourth wind, after much Monster was consumed.
Done.

Not Volvo, but in the summer I was messing with a VW, so that was happening in the garage and had to be pushed out to get anything else in:

Also I had my turbo 5.0-powered 242 in there and apart for a while:

Also last summer I did a bunch of stuff to a Hayabusa- methanol, air-to-water, secondary injectors, GT35R, etc.

I joined this here forum just lately, after purchasing this mighty fine '01 S60:

We are currently building a 2.3 with RSI rods and a single-vvt RN head for FINN and getting my car together.

I have since sold it and picked up a '98 T5a, as well as an 850 parts car with all the suspension stuff and a 3" exhaust that will all find it's way into my T5. Hopefully others will chime in with pictures and updates, as I am really bad about taking pictures regularly. Please feel free to contribute.

Vinyl Wrap

I own a 98 V70 color black, the exterior is losing some if its luster and being in canada rust has taken up home at the bottom of some doors, very mild rust nothing serious.

In the spring time i plan to grind it all down and use POR15, but there will be a slight color difference, not that i really mind to be honest

I was thinking of looking into vinyl wrapping the car, prolly a matte or flat black vinyl wrap, was looking at what you guys think of this, and if anyone has any experience in dealing with vinyl wrapping a car.

I got a quote on ebay for some "automotive vinyl wrap" for 700 dollars for a 50 foot roll, wondering if that is a fair price or is there maybe cheaper alternatives out there.

This would be a huge DIY project

Overdrive/lockup Erratic Behavior

Lately my 98 S70 T5's torque converter lockup function seems as if its repeatedly unlocking and locking, in increments of less than a second. This happens at speeds above 60mph, most often between 70 and 75. It occurs on inclines, flats, however doesn't seems to happen while descending.

For instance today while traveling 74mph, the rpms bounced from 2500 to around 2800. Maybe twice per second, for an extended period of time(20 minutes today) You could feel the change.

I tried the car in 3rd gear for a bit at 70mph, and there was no variation in rpms. I'm going to say this rules out the throttle position sensor, misfires, ect.

There are no codes, car runs great otherwise. I recently replaced the air filter, fuel filter, and changed the oil.... but the problem existed before then. The transmission fluid appears to be at the correct level, however is becoming dirty and I plain on changing it soon.

Looking at diagrams, the D position states "4th" as "direct clutch"... Is this transmission a 3 speed with the lockup considered 4th? or is there a 4th gear and lockup?
Besides the posibility that it is just old fluid.... any ideas?
Any way to disable the lockup solenoid (which i believe is SL, not S1 or S2) for testing purposes, or testing that I can do to further confirm the problem?

Njgb's 1998 V70 Awd - Project Good Grief

Okay this is a follow up to my first thread, "Opinions On Possible 1998 V70 Awd Purchase Tomorrow " located here: http://volvospeed.co...chase-tomorrow/

That was very helpful to get oriented but now that I have the car and tearing into various aspects I would like to start a new thread to focus on the specific repairs and progress. You can read the thread and see pics of getting it home and some various small odds and ends if you like or follow from here as I will include a small recap.

Basically I took a chance on a 1998 Volvo V70 AWD for $500. As you can see it's in decent shape but needs some work. The story is basically the PO had it apart to do the head gasket but never completed the job,the car sat for a yeart and a half before I towed it home. Obviously needs the engine reassembly and usual upkeep for a car sitting this long.

Made some progress over the past week or so but would like to ask a few questions before fianlizing the repairs and starting her up for the first time this weekend.

Few pics to get everyone excited (hopefully):

Just off the flatbed

So after some discussion about how to proceed I have decided to go ahead and finish the job the PO started. I checked the headbolts for proper toque and then started to prepare for reassembly.

Replaced some various parts like vac lines and pcv while waiting for other parts to arrive

Controlling Boost With An 18T

I currently have a 98R. Rica stage 2 @18psi, Hillman Pro Rx @18psi Intake, FMIC, straight pipes. Im upgrading to an 18T. Now Im talking about longevity for my motor. I really dont think I want to stay with an MBC, risk damaging my motor is not an option. Im thinking about an ebc. The AEM tru boost looks afordable. Im looking on some input with this. Im also getting a proper re-tune from ARD because Im not sure if the Rica stage 2 was for an 18T or not

Authentic Volvo Look

I have always loved the way plates in Europe looked, so I went on eBay and found a out of service plate with a Volvo frame. I searched for Swedish plates but had no luck so I went with a German plate.

I have already confused a border patrol officer coming back into the US when I went on Vacation last week. He thought I had my car shipped from overseas! I was happy how well my 250k miles Volvo made the 1000 mile journey. 26mpg and a 1/2 quart of oil.

My poor little headlamp wiper broke off at some point. This is the second one I have put on, but it came from a junk yard. Are these available new?

99R Parts Car. What Should I Grab?

Hey all, haven't posted much, but been searching and floating around for a while now. I own a 98 v70 awd glt wagon, and I'm slowly making it an R. So far have a 15g, R ecu, 3inch catback, lowered yadda yadda. Anyways. I got a call from a friend saying a buddy of his just got slammed in his R and is selling off the parts. It's a 99 however. Question is, will the gauge cluster work in my 98? I know the seats should, and I'm grabbing the front bumper and other odds and ends (18t)
Also is the 99R manifold any different/better than my stock glt one? Anything else I'm forgetting? Calipers? White injectors?
Thanks so much! May have some items for sale if nothing will work for my 98.

Megasquirt 3 Install

I finally started installing my MS3 box I purchased over 6 months ago. I got the kit from DIYautotune that requires you to solder and assemble the whole thing.

http://www.diyautotu...case-p-419.html (except I got the silver case)

A quick pic from when I soldered it a while back.

I am using all stock sensors for now. IAT will be the outside temp sensor. M4.4 has a stock barometric sensor, so I am using that. Crank, Cam will be all stock sensors. I will most likely change them to the more common GM sensors. I just want to know if its possible to get it running on all stock hardware. Possibly do a PNP kit... .

For now I am staying with the distributor. When I have it running and I'm happy with the way MS3 works then I will switch to COP.

I asked s_moneh for his config file, even though he is running MS2E it gave me something to compare my settings to. Props and a big thanks goes out to him.

This how the car sits right now.
All the paper work needed to wire it.

I will update this thread as I get the car running and post some of the configs to help others.

Boost Gauge

Hey guys, I'm waiting for my ARD Green tune in the mail...super excited about it lol
I've been running a RICA 18T tune for the past year with my MBC...ran ok, but had a few problems, hence the new tune

Question:
I have a GlowShift Digital Boost gauge. I have problems with it not reading correctly. In my opinion, the boost gauge is one of the more important gauges in a modified turbo car...I really wanna know what is the proper boost.

Any opinions on what Gauge I should buy?
Im looking for another digital one, red or blue...

I need something that is really acurate, not like my GlowShit one that bounces around between 1 and -3 when the car is off (accessory mode). Also, my gauge only goes down to -14.5 vacuum...ideally I'd want one that goes down too like -30

AEM a good choice?

Also, I ordered a AC Delco boost solenoid to replace my MBC. I want the tune to run my engine, not my MBC...thats why I need a better gauge as soon as possible.

I wanna make sure I hit my target boost, and not over or under

Thanks!
