Coolant Leak, Water Pump?

I have been leaking coolant ~2/3 of an expansion tank a month, crawled under to see that the the bottom part of the block on the passenger side by the oil filter has green droplets on it. Looking in through the wheel well liner, right above the control arm on the block is wet with coolant. Checked all the hoses over and doesn't appear to be leaking from any junction.

Is this a tell tale sign of the coolant pump?

Thanks!

Fmic Cold Side Ideas

I am in the process of doing a FMIC and had some ideas on the cold side I thought i would share with you guys. Hopefully it will help out people who dont want to cut/weld/fab the IAC or buy extra piping that isnt included in a kit.

I am probably going the route everyone else goes for the hot side. So I am only taking pics of the cold side.

This is the coupler that comes off the top of the stock intercooler and connects to the plastic pipe, its a 2.5 - 2.25 90 deg.

This one got sawed in two and used underneath.

Bent the bracket that holds the IAC down and twisted it in the rubber holder and rotated the TB coupler (might have to zip tie the iac down, we will see)

The pipe that comes off of the TB coupler was the bottom stock pipe.

I know the coupler is way to big at the middle connection so i am cutting a straight piece off of my other coupler that was the one from the long pipe with lots of bends to the bottom pipe in the stock set up.

If you guys see any major problems with my set up let me know! I havent finished yet and still have it all apart so i can fix it. Thanks

Strange Idle Issue After Head Gasket Job .. Help !

OK so I had my 97 850 glt's head skimmed, cleaned, new oem valve seals, etc. Got everything back together over the last few days.

Started her up, ran fine, normal mild lifter tick for after such a job which settled down .. started her up again, was idling perfect.. yadda yadda.. then i start hearing this odd noise from the engine almost like someone pretending to scratch a record ... idle got lumpy .. stalled ...

checked all connections, yadayada, started again, stalled .. . bah .. managed to pull a code, P1507 .. seemed to be IAC related so I swapped in a known good one from my wagon, even checked and reset my timing dead nuts to be sure ... cleared the code and it started up fine again, but started acting funky shortly thereafter .. about which point I grabbed the camera.

so I've got afew videos below of how its currently acting... the first vid it was acting perfectly fine for 2 mins or so and then the noise comes in along with the odd idle ... second video shows more funky idle action from inside the car ...

anyways when I went to drive it it got lumpy again stuttered and stalled .. the yellow arrow lit for like a millisecond before it stalled..

whos got some ideas????

The HID headlights on my 2004 V70R are not working. My wife drove the car during the day, then in the evening when she was coming home she turned the lights on and no lights (no high or low beams). I checked the fuses for the high and low beams and they are ok. Any ideas? I'm going to dig a little deeper and see if there is some type of voltage step up component for the headlights. If I'm not mistaken, you need more power to run HID lights and there is usually some type of electrical component that increases the power for an HID system. If you have any info on what may be going on it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wastegate Actuator Stuck

Today I was doing a little stage zero and was replacing the cbv and all vacuum lines that come from the tcv. While I was at it I was going to set my wastegate actuator at 3.7 psi for an ARD Orange Tune. When I applied pressure to the actuator via an hand vacuum pump, I noticed the rod from the actuator was not moving. I sprayed the rod with pblaster at the actuator, but if that does nothing I assume I will need to replace the actuator.

Does this sound correct? I'm fairly new to turbos/volvos in general, my thinking is the wastegate never opens since the actuator is stuck thus leading to overboosting.

Is there anything else I should do/check while replacing the actuator?

Wanted: Wood Trim For 2004 S60 2.5T

Hi All,

I'm planning to buy a Black/Black 2004 S60 2.5T, but I prefer wood trim and this one doesn't have it, so I'd like to swap it out.

Can anyone point me to either a good source for wood inlays or at least give me the Part Numbers, so I can search them myself.

I've looked at 2D and 3D molded dash kits, but they seem to be basically "stickers", so I'm not thrilled.

Hello all. I can see in the wiring schematic that the EVAP Canister Valve get 12v from Fuse, number 5. I pull the fuse and it drops to zero. I get ~6v from the ECM. I do not get full ground. When I ground the valve, the EVAP closes just fine. I swapped the engine out, and I'm wondering if the ECM is looking for a singnal from a sensor on the engine to give the EVAP Valve full ground? This issue started at the same time as the engine change, but can't replace the EVAP Valve because it works just fine when grounded.

I Really Need Help Now... Poor S70, Oil Lite Lit...

A few more issues with the $1000 2000 S70 that I am afraid of! I finally registered the S70 today and I dont think I should have. On the way home from registering the car the oil light came on. NOT good was scared made sure to turn the AC off and radio down to listen for strange noises. Drove it home after the light was lit about a half mile. I know I am in need of replacing the oil trap system and am guessing the oil pan O-rings. Does the oil trap have anything to do with the oil light ocming on?
I changed the oil and filter as soon as I got home just hoping that the oil and filter was dirty which it was. After the filter and oil change the lite still lites up after the engine warms up. I will not be driving the car till this is fixed. I have read to check the o rings in the pan, idle the engine for 2 mintues till warm shut the car off and remove the dipstick clean it, pull it again and look for airbubbles. No bubbles.
There was a weird issue with the filter change. It looked like there was some type of copper shavings from the oil filter. After the oil filter sat on the oil drain bucket, I could see shaving that looked of copper. Does anyone have any idea if this could be some type of oil additive of some type like a snake oil or something? What should I do?
Also got anyother code P1672. I have done internet searches and forum searches not leading to much information. Anyone have any idea what this code leads too?

Please post,
Any advice would be appreicated!

Weird Tapping Noise Coming From Back Of Vehicle

This is a weird one, within the last few weeks, I have noticed a tapping sound coming from the rear of my vehicle. It sounds like someone is in the truck taping on metal or on the roof tapping, there are a few taps, then it stops for awhile then starts back up. These are not little taps, it actually is very loud. I have checked everything in the trunk to make sure its secure. Any ideas?

Fifa Wants Penalty Shoot-Out Alternative...

So FIFA's President, Sepp Blatter, is calling for the Football Taskforce 2014 to come up with a superior alternative to the "tragedy of penalty shootouts."

What do you think?

My thoughts:

In no other major ball or puck based sport does a tied score lead to a finals scenario where players get a free shot at the goal. We don't put the football on the opposing team's 20 yard line and give each team 5 shots at getting a field goal or touchdown in the Superbowl. We don't line each team's five best foul shooters up in basketball and give them each a shot at making a basket for the final game of the NBA finals. In baseball we don't line up the home run hitters and see how many home runs they can hit against a pitcher in the World Series. We don't put the five best puck handlers on the line and do a shoot out - at least not in NHL play for the Stanley cup though they do in regular play and they do have shootouts in International including the Olympics and lower league play in the US and Canada).

It's less concerning to see a team win a regular season game through a shoot out in hockey. But to watch an underdog that has played magnificently lose in the Stanley Cup finals because the other team had a better line of shooters, something doesn't quit sit right. And that's why they don't do it in hockey.

At least that is what Blatter is saying in the case of football. He doesn't think it's right.

So, should they go into a second and third overtime for football (soccer)? It's hard to say. There is something gut wrenching and yet fascinating to watch exhausted goalies and kickers stand man to man and try to be the hero rather than the goat. As a goalie in youth football, I always hated having to take on a penalty kick, especially when it was one of my own teammates who caused the penalty. I wound up being the goat if I didn't block the goal, not the teammate who made the stupid mistake.

But in the case of football, how long would the game go if we let it run into multiple overtimes rather than going to the shootout after an initial overtime? Does the shootout offer a dramatic ending rather than an exhausted and deflating finish? Would eliminating the shootout change the strategic play of the game where some teams ultimately play out the clock in an effort to get to the shootout phase in hopes of a better result?

Me, I love the shootout. It's a dramatic finish to the game. And it truly pits a skilled goalie against great kickers. I can't say I've ever felt regret that a team like Italy won over France in the World Cup or that Brazil beat Italy. Or that the USA defeated China in the 1999 Women's FIFA World Cup or Japan beat the USA in 2011.

You wouldn't have moments like these:

Or this:

So how would you change it - or should FIFA just tell Blatter to leave well enough alone?

Five Oil Leaks At Once?!?!?

Spent the last few weeks chasing oil leaks down the exhaust side of the engine and oil pan:

I found leaks from the following four places:

1) Turbo return line - I replaced the oring and seal
2) Rear cam seal - I replaced the cam seal
3) PCV hose under the spark plug cover was leaking, puddling oil on the head and dripping down the back through the weep hole - I put a better clamp on the hose.
4) The oil pan bolt wasn't torqued down all the way - I torqued it.

All four of these areas have stopped leaking, but there is STILL a small leak!

5) The elbow vacuum hose that connects the PCV system to the PTC valve had a tear in it, and it looked like a lot of oil vapor had collected all around that area. I had another elbow that fit and replaced it.

I'll check in a few days, I HOPE #5 was the last leak.

Question - would a tear in that vacuum hose cause oil to leak from it? I assume the oil vapor coming from the PCV system could find it's way out?

Just need to nail down a job before the move. Had a good phone interview today with a company in Browndeer and when the owner found out I'd be in Hartford this weekend he invited me to meet him at his shop on my way home on Monday. They are closed for the holiday but, he'll meet me and show me around. Good sign. Hoping to find a place to live kind of out in the country. Will be cool to live so close to Road America.
A/c Blowing Warm When Hot Out

My 2006 V70R a/c starts blowing warm and the compressor clutch stops engaging once the car thermometer reads above 78 F. Makes it real inconvenient to use on long trips on nice days. I have read on the bread clip shim for the older models (P1s) but can't find a picture reference that shows if this can be done with my (P2) compressor clutch. Or I guess there could be another problem as well. Problem is I don't see an easy way to gain access to the face of the compressor compared to the P1 cars. So any help or in-site, best of all directions on how to get it fix would be greatly appreciated. I live 90 miles from the nearest Volvo qualified mechanic, so when work prevents me from getting there I have not choice but to be my own mechanic.
Thanks

Propus C Replacement Parts?

Just picked up a set of Propus C wheel for cheap off of craigslist, but two have slight inner rim dings which I figured would be no problem to have repaired when they are being refinished.

My parts manager is telling me that I can get replacement parts for BBS wheels for cheap, probably cheaper than having them repaired, and I should just go that route instead.

Skeptical, as Id never heard this for the 2 piece wheels, I did some searching and came up empty handed. All I found were parts for the high end 3 piece wheels. The outer rim(barrel) sells for $300 ea. for the 3 piece, so I dont see how itd be cheaper but whatever.

Posting this to see if anyone knows about parts for these, otherwise Im calling I'm dumb and will just have them refinished ($95 per) like I originally planned.

Changing a few of the ways supporting membership is handled. All the levels will be the same, but now some of the higher levels will have loyalty discounts. This is a discount applied automatically if you have paid for other memberships a certain number of times. In an effort to test this, anyone with lifetime should see Gold as a 50 dollar upgrade. In addition there is now also the ability for the use of coupons. For example the first 6 people to use coupon code ironmonkey should get 10 dollars off any package. Meaning Gold could be 40 dollars with the coupon code. Have a lot planned for this in the future but right now just trying to confirm I got all the data imported correctly.
1996 Volvo 850 Na. M4.3 Ecu(Na) Into M4.4(Na) Car

Hello everybody! I have a few questions about my 1996 850 NA.

Currently i have the m4.4 na ecu. 0261 203 077 Has the big GW.2 on it. Ive been looking into seeing if it was possible to flash it and i believe it is possible with a VAG COM KKL Cable. I was just wondering if instead of using the m4.4 ecu i could swap in a m4.3 ecu from a 95 850 NA. 0 261 203 165 has a big H.2. It seems there is more support for m4.3 and it is easier to read the binary and flash.

Will there be any problems with this? Do the 95 NA's have EGR? Will i have to do the EGR mod on the 4.3 ecu? Also will i have any problems with SAS on my 96?

Also what problems will i have with my air condition. I remember reading a while ago the m4.3 air conidtion control and m4.4 ac control do not mix and match and you can potentially blow up your compressor? Im sure i can do some simple rewiring inside the ecu.

Thanks everyone!

Volvo 850 On Speedline Alessios

Copied and pasted from s|w.

I have been into Volvos my entire life, so naturally when I was searching for a new project I wanted to build an 850 or s70. After months of searching on craigslist I stumbled upon my latest project. The title of the ad read something like "97 Volvo 850, Mechanics Special". Awesome, just what I was looking for. I clicked the link and began reading the vague history of the car that the seller had to offer. The pictures were literally thumbnail size but I couldn't help but notice the factory R bumper, R suede steering wheel, wheels that were only offered on the t5, and last but certainly not least the mileage. Only 84k on a 97. On a whim I hopped in my car to go check it out. Upon arrival at the hole in the wall gas station I was greeted by your typical used car salesman. After speaking with him for a while I found out that the previous owner was an old woman who drove the car without coolant. It started and ran but it was very rough. The positive part about all this was that it had typical symptoms of a blown head gasket, not too bad. To make a long story short I ended up doing the head gasket, fully rebuilt and machined head, and N/A cams (Huge thanks to my buddy Adam who played a major role in helping me bang this out in a day). I spent a couple months refurbishing the wheels as well as calculating suspension and wheels specs to get it sitting right where I wanted it. Within the next couple of weeks I am gong to be picking up stiffer springs in the rear (already ruined my fenders) as well as coil overs for the fronts. Without further a due, my 1997 Volvo 850.

This Is What Happens When.....

This is a first for me and everyone else in the shop, so I figured I'd share it with you guys. Vehicle was a 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE. Driver is a female college student(Texas Tech). The owner is her father, who happens to own a dealership in Midland, TX. Our shop is in the North Dallas area. So to sum up, It drove pretty much across Texas at highway speed like this. Scary stuff.

Notice anything missing?

Some shots of the caliper pistons.
Here you can see the difference in rotor thickness, where the pad backing ate so much of the rotor away, it was able to slip out of the caliper bracket, riding between the rotor and rotor shield.

Vaccum Leak After Longer Highway Speeds

v70, non-turbo, 1998, 175k miles. Symptoms are always the same: Every 200 to 400 miles, after driving the car on the highway for 20, 30 minutes, when exiting and sitting at a light, the check negine light comes on. I get codes for a small vaccum leak and the purge valve. Replaced purge valve with original part and replaced the rubber connectors, lines. The new purge valve and hose/connector replacements seemed to have done the trick for a while, but after 1k miles, symptoms came back. Smoke testing seems to be the next step, but this odd behavior might point to a clear-cut issue. Milage is around 25 mpg, so although milage was a couple of mpgs better years ago, engine doesn't seem to run too rich.

Probably unreleated issues: Some oil around the spark plugs, supect the PCV; highly unlikely to be related, but filler neck flap is old and makes gassing up a pain as the first couple of gallons, the pump shuts off due to gushing gas.

Any advise?

Need Help Upcoming N/a To Turbo Swap

So I have a 98 s70 n/a auto and will be dropping in a Turbo motor and 5 sod but this weekend only I have access to stripping a 2000 GLT auto. I'm using all of the good body panels off of it and the GLT has no motor or trans in it but everything else is.

So what should I be taking out of this car for the Turbo swap besides the harness intake fuel lines radiator and exhaust?

By the way the stripping thread is in the 1999 and newer maintenance section.
I'll have to save that for this Christmas when we are back down again. In the past I've met up with folks in Jupiter and had lunch at the Crab House off A1A.
S60 T5 2.3L 2001 Rebuild.

Hey guys, well i will need some nice advice here. After all this years and 138k miles on my car, i still in love with it, i was thinking to trade it for an used R but to be honest i really like how this car is served me all this time, too many emotions involved, was my first volvo and also my first car that i did pay with my own money on 2003. You can see in my signature all the mods that i have on it. I have BSR Stage 3 flash, downpipe, catback, snapp intake, ipd coils, etc, etc. Im really considering change to ARD flash, Lucky is a really good friend and i think it will be an amazing option for a new flash, maybe with a 19T??? lol.

After different things, i decided to make some compression test which i will post pictures here. Cylinder 1 gave me 95 psi, 2-145. 3-145, 4-145, 5-95 psi. So i did order headgaskets, bearings, pistons rings, seals, gaskets etc, etc so i can open the engine, and replace all necessary hardware so i have a refresh engine. The S60 feels really good, power, torque was always there.

After we removed the head(one of the screws gave us really hard time!!!!!, 4 cracked sockets)I drop the head to a good friends shop so he can work on it, today he told me that 2 exhaust valves were a little bend, but needs to be replaced, got new ones for $40 both. Tomorrow my head will be done ready to install. Everything for $150 usd.

today also we remove the pistons and we found something that i was not expecting, cylinder 1 and 5 with cracked pistons, good news? well at least my cylinder walls are in perfect condition, no sing of imperfections around on cylinder 1 and 5, so at least no mayor work will be made.

Here is where i need your opinions, i was considering ordering stock pistons(if the block still in std of course) or goes with something more performance, dont know if it will worth if i keep stop rods. It will be almost impossible at this time to replace my rods cause im getting short of money with all the repair and some home issues. So i guess getting just the pistons will be the option. My question is where can i have them?. Which brand?, should i go different bore?.

Hope your experience will give me good options and i really appreciate all the time and help on this thread.

Here is some pics.
How hard is this job for someone who does normal maintience from oil changez to brakes? Has anyone written a guide on how to do so? i have searched however am not sure if they are for the oil seperator or the flame trap. Does my 2000 have a flame trap?

So I've been on the hunt for a manual car for some time and stumbled across this car
1998 volvo s70 t5m, 109k, dealer serviced since day 1, clean title, red, near perfect interior.
Went and test drove it the other day and only has a few issues. Power locks don't work the best, abs/tracs light on, and that's about it. Car drove nice, suspension is perfect. Priced around $4k. Seems like a deal to me. In the event I wanted to sell it I should be able to get my money back and the issues it has are easy to fix.
Right now I have a '95 yellow with some light mods that I want to install a 18t, r manifold, exhaust and ard ecu. I'm considering selling the car as is now and trying to pick up the s70 as I want a manual car. Plus this s70 seems like a really good base for a fun daily driver.

Mine were on my S70 T5 for only 20K kl/m maximum then put on the V70T for less than 10K kl/m and the LHS started to clunk and got very bad when i went on a trip in heavy rain as the car pulled itself into standing water , very scary with the family on-board.....
I need to trace when i bought them from a local re-seller but it was a few years ago when i had the 850R manual wagon and they were not put on that car.
It seems like premature failure , so much for HD, thicker bar maybe but inferior ball joints.....

Tuner4Life's 1998 Saffron C70 Progress Thread

Hi everyone. I have been posting over on volvoforums and am slowly discovering that the c70 section is about a ghost town, nobody replies to questions, nobody has an opinion, etc... I have been trolling around here and really like the way the forum is set up and organized. Seems to be lots of helpful and nice people around here. Can wait to get to know everyone.

Anyways, in this thread (Which I copied over from volvoforums and edited accordingly) I will document the progression of, what is actually my wife's, 1998 C70 Coupe. I will link to any useful threads I start or find useful during the progression as a resource later on.

So...

Well it looks like it's going to be a fairly substantial project car, so I am going to keep a record (with pics) of what gets done.

We originally purchased this car, a 1998 Volvo C70 HT Coupe, for my wife. She looked at tons of cars and kept coming down to the C70, but she had to have an orange one. Somehow we got lucky and one popped up just a few hours away the same day she sold her old car. It looked to be in pretty good condition, and just needed a PCV system and maybe a wheel bearing. I quickly fixed these issues and in the few months we have had the car, we have also had to fix a c/v axle (snapped under very minor torque), drivers side window motor quit, drivers seat quit (Just need to reattach some little spring that came loose, and the car developed a significant oil leak which I and a few other mechanics believe to be coming from in between the block and head, (mind you, the underside was bone dry when we picked it up.

Anyways, despite all these issues she still loves the car and so do I (and this coming from a saab/toyota fanboy). I will be pulling it off the road in the next month or so and doing the head gasket, all upper gaskets, timing belt, water pump/t-stat, and most likely pulling and resealing the oil pan.

This car was supposed to be a daily driver for my wife, but it i becoming a fairly extensive project, so I will be posting updates in this thread.

But first, pics of the car right after picking it up...

Alright, I fixed the oil leak. Turns out the hose from the block to the flame trap has a rip in it. I also replaced several vacuum hoses and repaired a bunch of minor boost leaks. Now it runs great! The only problem I an still having is alot of tapping noise from the valvetrain. I tried the ATF trick and it didnt make a difference. So I am assuming I will have to drop the oil pan and change the o-rings.

Ok, I got the oil pan job done. It was a pain, buit I feel confident enough to do it again if I had to.

I also found alot of other problems though....

The air pump is bad and I did some research and found that the cause is most likely a bad valve where the air blows into the exhaust. Anyways that whole system is bad. I was confused though because there were no idiot lights on in the dash. I pluged the obd2 scanner into the car and found a 02 sensor code (bank1 sensor1) and a rich condition code. I am assuming that they are probably caused by the bad air pump. Anyways, I figured that the cel was burnt out so I pulled out the cluster and discovered that the CEL, ABS, TRACS OFF, and SERVICE lights were all MISSING!?!?!?. Yup, somebody removed all the lights. I replaced the bulbs and now guess what, they are all on. From what I have read, the ABS/TRACS light is most likely caused by a bad ABS module.

I called IPD and asked if they could make a tune that ignores the SAS system so I could just block it off. But turns out it is a federal offence to delete a worthless emission system even if I live in an area that doesn't do emissions testing. So I am going to have to fix it correctly. Darn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My wife has been driving this car for the last couple of years. Finally over the winter we were able to park it and I could start making a list of what all I need/want to do to it.

Here's what the plans are:

-pass side cv axle
-pass side trans output seal leaking
-timing belt job/water pump (140k mi and no sign of it ever being done!!!!!! aaaahhh!!!!)
-abs control module (abs and tracs lights are both on.)
-redo entire front end (everything is loose)
-B&G springs
-steering u-joint (steering feels like it's binding)
-15mm rear wheel spacers
-alignment
-replace split vacuum elbows on intake tube
-air flow directional actuator in dash is starting to go bad
-fix several burnt out dash lights
-oil/coolant/trans fluid change
-install 1998 V70R ecu (yes, I win at the junkyard)
-repair drivers window regulator (I rigged it last summer so it kind of works, need to fix right)
-derattle sunroof
-new headlight wiper arms/blades
-new brakes?
-some sort of double din screen (stock radio doesn't work)
-new speakers all around
-and the list goes on, and on, and on... and on.........

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This car is pretty much top priority to get stuff done on this year.

The first project I am working on is the front suspension.

-new mounts
-new bearing plates
-new end links
-new steering column u-joint
-B&G springs
-MOOG camber adjustment bolts
-new bilstein struts were put on a couple years ago and still seem to be in good shape, so I am leaving those

Everything went pretty smoothly except for the column u-joint which was a huge PITA. The front of the car is back on the ground though and looks pretty good even after just dropping the jack (springs haven't settled) it looks quite a bit lower. I cant wait to get the back springs in as well.

In progress:

Rebuilt strut assemblies:

One side installed:

Sittin pretty and still needs to settle quite a bit:

While changing the column u-joint I discovered some significant vacuum leaks due to these cracked and split elbows. I will replace them before putting the intake back together. Also need to figure out why the intake tube is covered in oil.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And the rear is done. The rear is surprisingly easy as long as you can get the car high enough to unload the springs after undoing the shocks. Kind of a weird design for the rear suspension, but it's pretty easy to work with. It definitely needs spacers in the rear now. I'm thinking 15mm. According to the manual the rear is only a couple mm narrower than the front, not sure if its the body shape or what, but it seems like a lot more than that.

What size spacers do you guys run on the rear? I'm not trying to hellaflush/poke/etc... just don't want it to look so sunk in.

Anyways, Pics:

Yes, the garage is a mess.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not too much to report at this time. I killed 2 birds with one stone last night. I replaced the pass side trans output seal and replaced the axle as well. The trans was leaking from that seal and the boots on the axle were ripped. So now no more leak and no more grease all over the wheel. yay!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally got my vacuum elbows in from fcp. Threw in a new battery and drove it for the first time in months. It desperately needs an alignment. The ABS/Tracs lights went out almost immediately so hopefully I wont have to get a new module for that yet. The cheap hacked together exhaust on the car is now hitting the rear spring, so I'll have to get an aftermarket turbo-back... darn.

Also, the A/C has a leak as it is very low on freon and it was full last summer.... The list never ends, but there is at least progress.

Pita Removing Turbo Exhaust Housing

I'm pulling an angled exhaust housing from a car that is getting parted. Got the vband clamp off and 3 of the 4 nuts to the engine, but I can't seem to reach that lower nut towards the driver's side? What's the trick or favorite tool here? I was trying a flexible ratcheting box wrench.

Worked on it for about 1/2 hour and decided to just give it a rest and attack it another day. I just don't seem to have any room back there to get a wrench on it and room to move. It's on a 99 AWD so technically wrong forum, but shouldn't be much different than any other. Mods can move if needed.

What's That Clunk - In The Front?

So...I've just about rebuilt the front end of my ('98 V70xc, 145K miles) - New Struts, Control Arms, Whl Brgs, Axel Shafts, Stab Links...etc. Now, just last week, a "Clunk" has developed in the Front End. I thought it was possibly the Front Spring not seated properly in the Strut...so I made sure they were in - OK. I looked for any rubbing, loose parts, etc...nothing found. So, I'm thinking SubFrame Bushings now - or maybe having to pull the Struts out again to see if something wasn't assemble properly (but, I have about 3K miles on the Struts replacements before the sounds started)?

Symptoms: Low Speed, small bumps or depressions - the sounds coming front the front sound like a spring popping, not a squeak or rattle, or like something loose...more like something that is over tightened and is "popping" upon release... If I am going at speed over a rough road, there doesn't seem to be sounds coming from the front end. If I trying turning sharply (left / right....repeat rapidly), I don't get any sounds from body roll....nor do I get this sound if I pull up into the driveway's uneven surface, or garage apron - where one front wheel is moving at a different height twisting the suspension.....this is very annoying with all the front end work that's been done?

I see there is now a IPD repair kit for the SubFrame bushings instead of replacing the bushings themselves. A recent post started this new topic, so I will monitor it for any feedback (+/-). If someone has comments to my issue, please do so....these forums have helped me a lot - I'm not afraid to get back under this thing to change out the bushings if that seems to be the culprit.

Thanks

My automatic transmission dipstick broke in the tube and I accidentally pushed it further in when trying to retrieve it. Now its way down there and almost impossible to see. I've read that you have to remove the tube to get it out but can't figure out how to do this. So, what is the trick to getting this tube out? Am I missing something?
Apparently they do not answer email anymore which I thought was their job so I looked Marin up on Facebook. Apparently they no longer allow users to comment on their wall starting the end of April. I have no idea why a company would not want to hear back from the social networks. I mean think of all the things people have to say about them. Maybe it was all the posts in recent months about broken frames or poor company relations after they were sold. Either way a quick google each for marin bike warranty or marin cracked frame will yeild some LULZ

Flame Trap Dripping Lots Of Oil...a Real Mess

1995 850NA, 200K miles . There is a tremendous amount of oil leaking from the flame trap connection. The basket filter inside is clear, and I put a new O-ring. Even if there was a good seal, why is so much oil being passed through this tube into the intake? The whole area below the flame trap is saturated with oil, and there are nice spots of oil on my driveway!

Went to EFI Logics mega meet today, crazy amount of cars, awesome people, awesome shop. They were doing dyno pulls so I jumped on to see what my car was making, or not making. Only thing I have really done performance wise has been the snabb style intake and fmic so I was aiming to be over 200 hahah

Hit 209 hp and 225 ft/lbs on a mustang dyno. not bad for 170k mile motor! Was 88* outside (over 90 in the dyno room), bit humid, probably could have squeezed a couple more horse power out if it was a bit cooler and drier.
ARD tune and exhaust are up on the agenda.

Head Gasket Blown Need Advice

So I just joined volvo speed within the last couple days so Im going to combine my first "help needed" post with my introduction...sorry for the long post

first of all my name is Scott and Im 25. my first car was a 95 850 N/A 5spd which I totalled when I was in highschool but never stopped loving volvos.

skip ahead to a couple days ago. so I needed to pick up a cheap car thats better on gas then my truck because I have a 25 mile commute every day. Well my girlfriends friend who is the godfather of my 6 month old son(doesnt know a thing about cars) had a 98 s70 N/A auto sittin around for the past couple months and said I could have it for free... well I agreed because I know the potential of this car and love the body style but this thing is in sad sad shape..231,000mi and not taken well care of

picked it up last night and brought it to work today... while I was looking through the engine bay to check fluid levels and do a quick inspection to see what needed immediate attention I pulled up the dipstick to find some nice thick chocolate milk..and no idea how long its been like this.

I dont have much money but I can do all my own work and have access to any tool I need.. and I can buy enough time to accumulate parts for one of my options...

because I dont know much of the history of this car I dont want to waste my time and money on repairing the head gasket if there could possibly be internal engine damage...

locally I have been able to source a 2.3l t5 for $250 ecu for $100 and am researching more prices now but I plan on in the future swapping out the auto for an m56

where as I have found a 2.4l N/A motor for i think it was $500 or $600

if I go with the t5 swap without the m56 swap realistically what would I be paying for parts for the bare minimum to get this thing up and running.... and thats assuming the low price of $250 for the t5 means there is nothing attached to the engine(I still have to call the salvage yard to find out)

whats everyones thoughts? keep in mind I had already planned on a future t5 and m56 swap later next year...

Well I've made a few subtle changes over the past 3 months or so and I've been dropping hints here and there so here are the official pictures.

Car was wrapped using a 3M clear satin laminate, brakes have been painted, wheels powder coated "Misty Gold". I was also able to score a brand new Thule box that was paint matched to the car. I hope you guys like it.

This will be the first of many pictures I upload of my s70. Don't judge my photography skills too harshly OK? My girlfriend and I went to cape cod for a few days on a mini vacation. I was taking some photos of the beach and ocean and then decided "hey this would be an awesome place to take a really good photo of my car." Unfortunately someone was parked next to me for awhile (why do people do that THE WHOLE LOT WAS OPEN!) so the photos were angled differently. Hope you guys like them!

under wot, my gauge spikes to 18 then drops to 10 then back to 18 then ten etc. can def feel it! i should be able to check the actuator soon, but wondered what the typical culprits are that cause this.?

Video Of My Twin Turbo V70R

This is a video of my V70R. For those that dont know it is a compound setup with a smaller then stock LPT turbo and then a GT35R. It runs off megasquirt. It is also a 6 speed and converted back to drive by cable from wire. I could not be happier with how good it runs. It really feels like a V8 with the throttle response from the small turbo. There is really power everywhere. I am only running 18psi now but will turn it up to 30 once I wiring it my new map sensor. If you listen you can here the first turbo spool right when I floor it at 3k then the 35R starts to spool at 4.5k. This is even earlier then my GT3076 would spool when I had it. I did this pull in 3rd. It goes from about 40-100 in 10 seconds rolling on the throttle.

Successful 850 N/a To Turbo Swap....yes, It Does Run And Drive, Quite Well I Might Add!

Hey Guys I'm new to the site, I've been reading threads on 850 na to turbo swap. Well here is mine! For starters my 95 850 wagon started out life as a 5spd na. My good friend Tech bought it from one of our customers and used the 5spd parts for his yellow T5r( which by the way is a NASTY car!!!) Which also inspired me to build my own. So while Tech had her, she became an auto na, and back to a 5pd na. Long story short, he scooped up another wagon, and I was given first dibs on her! Here is where the story begins.....

Wire Types

I'm starting to get some mis-fires (and a check engine light from those misfires) so I'm going to get new wires. I already replaced the plugs and the wires were already on my list cause they are original from when the car was made. I'm just wondering what types to choose from. I personally like and have heard good things about the kingsborns but I want the wires kind of soon and they need to be shipped. I could also get the generic duralast (ick no thanks) or get Bosch wires ordered into auto zone. Just wondering what I should go with. any opinions would be great.

Rn Motor Install

I am putting an 01 LPT motor in the R, using the 19T for now with the 20G waiting on me to weld some pipe.
I had to bore (ok drill out) the cams to accomodate the distributor plate and Cam position sensor. I sourced a new(er) AC compressor and Alternator and PS pump and am using the new accesory bracket which I feel is a huge inmprovement alone.
For now the engine is bone stock internally but I may put my forged rods in once the current motor is on the bench.
I will use the existing intake manifold and open up the ports as much as possible to mate better with the RN head.

Poly Lca Bushing For A 93 850?

Hey guys,

Need to replace the LCA bushing on my 1996 855R. It currently has the Kaphlenke LCA's on it, so I can just replace the bushing itself. All I could find was the aftermarket junk. Is there a poly bushing available? I checked PowerFlex, but no dice. Any ideas?

Volvo's From Across The Big Pond (S70R, 480 Etc)

Hi guys,

I'll do a short introduction about myself; My name is Auke, at this moment 23 years old. Living in The Netherlands and I a big fan of Volvo! I study economics and beside that I work in my spare hours for Volvo in marketing and sales.

The whole Volvo addiction began many many years ago and now I've got a big collection of Volvo's (1:1 and scale models), brochures/leaflets, showroom material, internal booklets etc etc...

What Volvo's do I have:
- MY87 Volvo 764 aut.
- MY94 Volvo 480 S-Line man.
- MY95 Volvo 480 GT-Line USA-Spec man.
- MY98 Volvo S70 T5 aut.
- MY98 Volvo S70 R aut.

The x70-series and 7xx-series are well known in The States, but I doubt anyone of you is familiar with the 4xx-series? In the late '70s Volvo began a new project what needed to be the car for the younger people, the Volvo 480 (like the C30 is nowadays). It had to compete with the Volkswagen Corrado and the Porsche 944. Volvo's largest market was and still is The States and in the first place the 480 was developed for the American people. When they started to produce the car the exchange rates changed so negative that it would be way expensive and that's one of the reasons Volvo didn't sold them in The United States.

They build the 480 in The Netherlands from 1985 till 1995 at the NedCar factory in Born (where they also build the P1 S- and V40's). Here are some pictures:

Beside these new parts there's a big list of little detail and technical parts that are added on to keep it in a mint shape.

I'll post updates and pictures in the future. If there are any questions, feel free to ask!
