Well with all the exhaust fun and all the sidelines of WANTING a good exhaust,

I went with HPTJoe's route and had a custom crush bent 3" piping done from the cat back.

Right now, they welded the stock tip, until I can find out what tip Joe used.

No Muffler, aluminized steel, crush bent, 3" for 100 installed in Pasadena, CA.

Not at all a bad price, and the sound is MEAN as heck. woo wee.. it sounds nice.

for a review about this, you can refer to Joe's thread... but for those looking for a cheap catback in LA, this place has done me well (so far)

Good stuff man. Can't go wrong with an exhaust system for $100 that flows better than anything else you can buy. smile.gif

I wish I could tell you what kind of tip it was, but the shop just had it in the display case along with many other tips of different styles. I got lucky enough to find a nice one, and it just so happened to be 3" as well. You might have some luck looking around some other shops and seeing what other tips they have. Or if you want to spend a little more money, Magnaflow makes a really nice oval SS tip they market for "Trucks and SUVs" which would look very nice on a C70.

oh well.. I'll go back and ask them to get that one for me smile.gif

Hey,

Interesting post...I like the idea of a 3" exhaust for $100...lol...

How is it you can run no muffler legally? Or is this an "off-road" only purpose (:

And...out of curiousity....just how loud is it? (;

-Joe

P.s. I love the sound of a turbo with mufflerless exhaust

Its relatively loud from 1950 Rpm to 3500 Rpm, then the rest of the engine noise just drowns out everything anyways.

The idle is nice and a low rumble, that is deep. I can take a video of it some day. Although i am still considering a muffler of some sort eventually... and since this is crush bent, it may be a temporary thing.

YOu can run without a muffler if the sound isnt over a certain decibel i believe. Im not really sure, but honestly, you should always have a muffler cuz its loud for people in the car/outside

I have mixed feelings about the exhaust as i have driven it around more. The sound is nice for a little while, but driving up inclines or trying not to get noticed at certain times can be a little irking. The feel of the car has improved over when i first drove the car, although i hear some rattling of which i think might be because of the stock tip temporarily welded on. The c70 was never really that quiet (engine/exhaust wise) to begin with anyhow, and mixed in with all the other clinks, clanks, and clunks, its sort of a driving noise medley tongue.gif right joe? smile.gif

A muffler has nothing to do with emissions. A turbocharged car is a lot quieter w/out a muffler than a NA.

He beat me to it while i was writing smile.gif

You hit the nail right on the head. smile.gif

All those reason are why I don't have that exhaust on the car anymore. It was fun while it lasted, but what really did me in was the droning at very few key RPM points. Since I live in the hills, having to drive uphill was just annoying. On top of that, there is a certain highway which connects the lower part of the Peninsula to the hills which at one part is a full 3 miles at a 6% grade. Let's just say driving up that almost daily having to cruise between 65-70 MPH is not my idea of fun...

Exactly... Im looking at that spintech muffler that was mentioned in the other exhaust thread. The t5 always droned, but the droning is exaggerated a little bit too much. I came home with a slight headache mad.gif

What did you do in terms of exhaust for right now to couple with that BSR PPC chip?

been looking for a setup shop in LA, but can that place do a full 3" turbo back with mandrel bends and a muffler?...how much would I be looking at?...catback w/o muffler is 100, so i'm guessing add 100 for the muffler, 100 for a race cat, and another 1-200 for the downpipe....let me know if this is right!....i definitely don't want a loud system... i need as quiet as possible, but with 3"!.....ahhh, this would be sweet, especially if it's just down the 110!

Nothin...it's all back to stock.

I'm lookin' to get the ATP "VES" once people start buying it since I have yet to hear testimonials from guys on other forums. But ATP makes real quality stuff so I figure I can't go wrong even if I'm one of the first...

I've heard that there isnt a mandrel bender until you go out to Irvine (as per phone calls i have made) Of course i only called a few people.

Also note, the cat back without muffler was not mandrel bent (the one i have)

I am looking at a SpinTech Muffler for about 80 bucks plus shipping/tax, and that Magnaflow tip which is another 80 or so. I am not sure on prices of the race cat, but magnaflow has a carb legal one, and i dunno anyone who is doing downpipes yet (locally custom)

here is something weird...i went to Midas today, just for the heck of it....the guy said he could build a downpipe back exhaust for me, including a flowmaster or magnaflow muffler for about $400, and I would have to bring in a high-flow cat....he said, however, the there is no way to adapt a 3" downpipe to the small turbo flange, but he could build it from the cat back, if I brought in a cat..
can I go 3" from the turbo all the way back with the stock turbo on there?, and he said it will be stainless steel, so how do i know if it's mandrel bent or crush bent?...what is the difference?....it's Midas, so would i be right in guessing they have a mandrel bender?

I have no idea what I am doing...how would they get an aftermarket muffler in there with the setup of the weird stock muffler, and they said that they can't put in a universal cat, but would need a cat that is okay for OBDII cars...is there a race cat out there that is OBDII compliant and won't set any CEL's?

lastly, should I go 3" or 2.5 inch, based on this fitting on the flange, and I want as quiet as stock or close to as quiet if possible...what kind of setup should i do, and what muffler to get it quiet?

know this is alot, but I have no idea what to do, and the guys was like, "yeah, we have a pipe bending machine", but when i asked if it was a mandrel bend machine, he looked at me funny!!!

appreciate any help!

First problem here is you went to Midas. Any exhaust person that looks at you funny because you asked about a mandrel bender should not even be touching you car.

Second, no Midas in Southern California has mandrel benders, therefore the piping will be crush-bent. Hence the reason he looked at you funny when you asked.

Third, you will be getting aluminum piping for $400. I promise you they are not going to do the exhaust in stainless steel.

he showed me ss piping!...so the benders they have are not mandrel benders?....i don't know what I'm doing, and I don't want to drop over a grand for a full turboback...i think i can afford about 4-500 MAX....i saw that EST has 3" downpipes for the 850....how does that fit onto the stock 15g (i think) turbo?....and where can i get a race cat for the car?...I just tried Midas for the hell of it..i was driving around and just popped in...would never get a job done there, but I have no idea what to do or look for, so the guy was pretty helpful...he showed me a diagram of how the exhaust works, etc....well, any help or ideas would be appreciated, esp if you know where i can get a turboback done for my price range, with SS and mandrel bends!!

No, he didn't. He showed you aluminized piping which doesn't look all that bad when it's brand new.
