Hi There:
My 86 740, ps, pb, 5 speed manual w/overdrive, a/c, has been sitting idle for over three years. Simply could not get it to run and gave up. Finally got it to run this week by swapping out injectors and two new fuel pumps, wtf...? She started right up and purrs like a kitten.;-) It's amazing! But, I now have three problems:
1. Fuel gauge won't move at all-always reads "empty". (I installed in-tank pump and swapped fuel pump relay; can't recall any problems before messing with the in-tank pump. But, it's been almost 4 years and I'm getting damned old!). Also today I read another thread that said that his f.gauge acted the same after sitting for some years, but self-corrected after a few tanks of gas. Any hope for me?
2. Now, also, the A/C blows properly through dash vent upon starting. But after 5 minutes running the engine, the a/c begins to blow warmer air through defrost vents and I fry in this Texas heat.
3. Odometer doesn't work. Speedometer works fine. So, I have no possible way of knowing how much gas I have left bc I don't know how many miles I've driven (perfect storm situation). Should I simply get a used speedo or try to repair this one? This s*** is driving me f***ing loco!
I've been out of this car for a long time. So, if you can help me, pls. give as much detail as possible such as wire colors and component locations. Been driving a jeep, but gas prices led me back to the Brick!
Many thanks.

Might be a fault in the gauge or the printed circuit on the back of the instrument panel. I'd start by locating the connector for the sending unit and grounding the the signal wire for the fuel gauge, the guage should read full at that point. Not exactly sure which wire that will be as I don't have access to a wiring diagram for that year at my home, but IINM it will be the one that shows some voltage, ignition on, engine off.

Sound like the heater control valve, when vacuum is removed, it moves to the full open position, make sure you have good vacuum reaching the valve. Otherwise it might be a fault in the control panel, I'm not familiar with the early 740 panels though.

Odometer gear failure. IPDusa.com or odometergears.com might be able to provide a replacement part.

If the fuel gauge just failed when you installed the intank pump then the sender is bad or stuck.
