I was told a while back about some sort of hanging bracket for the 2001 XC which would correct a problem where water gets on the exhaust pipe and thermally expands, creating contact with the drive shaft and therefore a harmonic noise. The gentleman at the Volvo dealership here in Jersey didn't know what I was talking about so I thought I'd ask if anyone had the part number or any other useful information I could use to direct them to this solution in case no one else there knows about it either (for whatever reason).
Thanks in advance.

The hanging bracket is an imperfect solution (actually, it sucks). Removing the resonator (which is what actually touches and scores the drive shaft) is the permanent solution, though it brings with it the potential for droning. You could also add washers between the existing hanger brackets and the frame to lower the exhaust.

DESCRIPTION: Under certain conditions when driving through puddles of water, slush and or snow, the underside of exhaust system may cool down fast enough causing the exhaust to change shape and touch the propeller shaft, causing a very high pitched squealing noise. This noise will be noticed by the driver for only a short time, once the exhaust temperature equalizes the noise will disappear. If the customer should have this complaint a tell tale mark will be left on the propeller shaft

Exhaust Conflict with prop shaft (location rear lip of front muffler).
SERVICE: Should the customer experience this condition please install the exhaust support kit, following the instructions listed below.
1. Remove the existing cross-member.
Install:
- the new cross-member. Tightening torque 25 Nm.
Open the clamp.
Install:
- the clamp on the exhaust pipe with the screw, loosely
- the rubber blocks and adjust the clamp so that the rubber blocks are vertical.
Tighten the screw on the clamp. Tightening torque 25 Nm.

Just to clarify, you're saying it doesnt work? =(

Worked fine on my 2003 V70 AWD. I had the dealer do this TSB work after I experienced the squeeling numerous times, usually in winter after driving through standing water @ high speed on local interstates. Haven't had the problem since then. Some argue that the mod reduces ground clearance, but I don't care since I don't go off road and do not try to jump the snowbanks.

Not exactly, but placing another bracket above the resonator to keep it from deflecting up doesn't eliminate the risk. and means you could be in even worse shape if you were to hit something with the exhaust (more crap to push up and into the drive shaft a la the non-functional bracket below the exhaust).
