I have a 95' 850 sedan and I have a 10" W7 that I took out of my last car. I want a custom box for it, but I'm torn, I have had some tell me to have the sub shooting up towards the rear 6x9's, and I have had others tell me to have it shoot towards the rear seats. I have the factory bandpass box from JL, but not sure if I want to stick with it. Money isn't really an issue its just the planning that is killing me. As far as the rest of the system I'm going to have components in the kicks in front, and I have 6x9's in the rear already. So if anyone has some pointers to give that would rock. Thanks guys!!!! biggrin.gif

bandpass boxes usually make the bass super-deep and loud. As opposed to a small sealed box that hits tight quick bass. it's a totally different thing thant you lowpass filter

It's not totally different. A bandpass box (actually 2 'boxes' or chambers) allows the sub to only play a certain range of frequencies. Hence it only passes a small section, or band, of the music frequencies. This is accomplished by varying the size and type of chambers. i.e. sealed rear box firing into a ported front box. Or a ported rear box firing into a sealed front box or ported rear firing into a ported front. Each of these designs has their own 'Order'. that's why you'll hear things referred to as a "5th order bandpass box" or a 4th order, etc.

The problem with bandpass boxes is that if they aren't designed just right for the woofer you are using then you can/will cause MAJOR damage to the woofer. The worst part is, because of the bandpass design, you won't hear your woofer self-destructing. blink.gif

This is what I have in my trunk. Custom made box for a JL 10" W3 I believe. Dual Voice Coil.

They built the box large enough so that a 12" will fit if the 10" was not enough. For my tastes, it is plenty.

It is a Sealed box with Fiberglass resin coating the inside to fully ensure no air leaks.

Oh, something else to think about. Unless your Rear deck speakers are sealed the pressure from the sub will make them sound like crap.

I do not have any deck speakers hooked up in my setup. Doubt I ever will.

I never really thought about the pressure from the sub acutally will screw with the rear deck speakers. With that in mind I might just get some components and put them in the rear doors, along with a sh!t load of Dynamat to prevent rattling embarassment. So with removing the rear 6x9's I'll get matching material to cover those holes, to provide breathing room for the W7. So you guys think that I should just stick with the factory box and just save some sheckles?? Because I could always use some extra money for the 16T that I am going to put in very soon too... But back to the W7 I am going to have a quick disconnect for the sub incase I want less weight in the rear because that sh!t is heavy!!!...
Thanks for all your replies guys. Drive it like you stole it!! cool.gif

keep the factory box... it'll hit HARD.... save the money for the 16t. Here's my setup... No need for the quick disconects here!

I had a 92 Maxima with a 12" Kicker Free Air in the trunk with 6X9's in the Deck. I had not thought about that problem either when I made the setup and then I noticed how crappy the 6x9's sounded with the sub on. Turned the sub off and they pounded.

I eventually cut their frequency to 200Hz and above. Doing that makes it pointless to even have them.

I like your setup in your trunk!!! So I am guessing that I'll stick with the bandpass, and I was thinking about removing the spare and having my amp rack down there, because in my old 4runner I had the amps mounted on the back of the box, and I took the box out for a snowbaording trip and had NO speakers as well as bass. So what I am thinking is keeping the stock flooring in the trunk and getting a nice little rack down there.

Thanks!

yeah, that'll work.. My amps are right under the rear deck.. it works really well. No overheating problems at all.... with the rear seats folded down you can get to the amp adjustments really easily.. Good luck man!

Sweet thanks I'll post some pics when the system is all done, and I'll also post GTEC meter results after the 16T upgrade.
