question? is the seal from the speakers enough? or is it almost nescessary to seal them off for good sound?

Sealing for any type of box is crucial. When you have a sealed box it is going to make some nasty sounds if you don't seal it up correctly. This will also cause vibrations that you probably won't like.

Which speakers? Sub speakers in a sealed box? or eliminating the rear deck speakers and sealing them off from the trunk?

I would think the rear deck speakers. But also he's right if you don't seal the subs in their box sealed or bandpass, they'll make some funky noises. With the rear deck speakers, .....yeah they just have to come out...

Yeah that's what I was guessing, but wanted to be sure... I'd just get some 3/4" MDF, paint it black, and make a cut out to go over the rear deck holes, throw some silicone sealant on there screw 'em down and call 'er good.

I have a question regarding removal of the rear speakers. I am setting up my system hopefully sometime later this week (depends on when it arrives). I am going to run two 6.5's in the front stage and 2 10's in the trunk. My HU is an Alpine CDA 9825. It has an option that allows me to turn of the power from its internal amplifier, effectively shutting off my stock speakers. Since I am going to run a seperate amp for all of my speakers, I was planning to just shut off the stock system and run my new system solely off of the new amp. Is it at all necessary for me to remove the rear speakers? I don't see why it would be, but if necessary, I will do it. I just don't want my car to look too much different from stock. I would rather that it appears entirely stock (save for the kicks and HU) than have to do modification.

I myself would take the stock speakers out.... I only use the front stage myself and I ended up taking apart the boxes that sit in the back shelf and taking the speakers inside of them out and then re-installing the empty boxes. It lets more bass get through to the cabin. As for the front speakers, I use the stock locations but if you're getting kicks you should probably just ditch them. Also make sure that you disconnect the stock tweeters or take them out. I left mine in becuse I figure that the housing may come in handy if I feel like throwing in a set of aftermarket tweets later. Peace.

I can see the logic in removing the rear speakers. However, i don't really see any compelling reason to remove the front speakers. Like I said, they will not be receiving any power, so they are just sitting there. If I ever decide to go back to the stock system then it makes a heck of a lot less work for me. As for the rear speakers, I could care less about them, because one of them doesn't even work. I will just pop those out of their little boxes and put the box back on the rear deck.

Plan:

Take out rear speakers. Leave in all the front ones and turn off their power.

You need a torx screwdriver to take them apart... only two different size heads if I remember correctly.

Yeah, they're one of the most crucial tools to have when working on volvo interiors... they're everywhere. If you don't have a set go get one of the multipack ones that look like the allen wrench fold up jiggers. I always keep a set of each in the car just for good measure.
