I'm Relatively new to VS, and I've seen a bunch of new members since I joined. I had a Cummins diesel truck before my Volvo, and of course I belonged to a forum like this one for my truck. The main difference that I've noticed is that on the Turbo Diesel forum, EVERYTIME a noob would sign up and as the typical noob question: "what can i do to make my truck/car go faster?" On the Turbo Diesel site EVERY RESPONSE was: " Get a Set of Gauges first... (Boost, EGT, Trans Temp were the big 3) establish some baseline numbers first, so you can tell if and how much your mods are helping.
Why do I not see that here? The boost gauge gets tossed out there, but so many times the first thing is ECU, Exhaust, Intake.. and so on. Now, my biggest problem is I missed out on the group buy for the triple A-pillar pod, so I'm waiting for the next one before I get my gauges... I also bought my car with many things already done to it as well... Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now... What do you guys think? I think the diesel guys had a good point about getting gauges first, then starting to do the big mods...

Oh, they also had a cool phrase they all used to say, I'm sure some of you have heard it... BOMB... Better Off Modified Baby.....

yeaaaa... yeaaaaa.... we have stock gauges on the dash (weak excuse) Also alot of people say "What can I do to make my car faster" so, an ECU helps... then when they come back saying "my car sucks" we go "get a boost gauge" and they find out they have the infamous 320,000 leaks these cars produce

I agree toally Legbend, I'm just tryin' to say that maybe we should start pushing the "importance of gauges" more as the first mod that you do.

I agree. It'd be nice to see a FAQ with sizes/prices/etc... the Stage 0 thread gets a lot of attention, it should be added in there.

I want a gauge small enough to fit in the lower a/c vent on the left side of the steering column (I hate displaying gauges, and especially hate pods). Any suggestions? biggrin.gif

hmm... I know some people have thier gauges in the lower DIN spot of thier cars... I don't like that tho, cause have to take your eyes off the road... (i know it works for some people just not me biggrin.gif ) I've never seen a decent gauge that's smaller than 2 1/16" .... Have you searched the Autometer site for ideas?

I personally hate where my gauges are located...they are below my head-unit...so I have to look down to read them...what I'm thinking of doing is, keep two gauges down there (add ATF Fluid temp) and move my boost gauge to one of the vents near the steering wheel...this would probably work the best for my setup...

You know '98S70R, you can try and order a gauge pod from Lotek outside of the group buy. Their website is www.gaugepods.com . If they have the mold, I don't think it'll be too much for them to knock off an extra. Give it a shot!

So to get a tad back on topic... laugh.gif (I love all the info that all you guys possess) What do you guys think about steering noobs to the promised land of engine monitoring before monster mods are dropped into thier cars?

I am running a boost and EGT gauges in a dual pillar pod and then I have oil temp and pressure below the radio.
The dual pod that I used is off a 87-97 ford f-150 truck, it fits pretty good but I went the extra step and molded it into the a-pillar

All most people really need for these cars is a good boost gauge. EGT and trans temp gauges are negligible. Beyond a certain point and for those who are serious about making power, a good wideband O2 setup is a very helpful tool for tuning and datalogging. Other gauges such as oil pressure, coolant temp, fuel pressure, trans temp and lightshow narrowband O2 are unneeded with these cars IMO. I think very few people on this site have any need for more than a quality boost gauge.

Charles is right...However I belive we are making some decent progress on our "Stage 0". Most of the people who post in a panic of sorts with things like "my car runs like poo, i'm getting bad gas milage, my car feels slow E/T/C" get the stage0 rammed down their throat as an answer and i would bet 90% of the time that is fix.
